  1. Sure. That's easy. I'm not voting because I'm not qualified to participate. I don't know the people and there's no way I can gather enough information to make an informed choice without going to more effort than it's worth to me. Any choice I made would be effectively guesswork. Those who aren't committed enough to live deeply in the issues and research candidates shouldn't participate. That's me. I'm just a skydiver. In exchange for my sloth, I vow not to self-righteously bitch if the vote results in disaster. I do however reserve the right to get involved later. Who knows? First Class Citizen Twice Over

  3. I think you're overestimating the American public's ability to think for themselves. When the CIA or army starts (openly) assassinating American citizens on American soil, Americans will cheer, "They MUST HAVE deserved it! Hurrah!" First Class Citizen Twice Over

  5. I once exited a 182 with a seized engine at 1800'. Pulled by 1750'. Probably open by 1400'. Last week I watched three BASE jumpers exit a cliff at 180'. They were open by 140'. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  6. I'd tell him, "Don't believe everything you hear in school." Or better yet, I'd yank him out of the brainwashing warehouse and find a private school whose methods and morals were in accord with mine. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  8. King Louis Cognac by Remy Martin. 50 years old and sold in Bacarrat crystal. Mmmmm! Unfortunately it's US$1400/bottle in America. If I'm feeling rich I might pick one up at a Canadian dutyfree for US$900. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  9. This comment made about the 9-way exit: Is so funny in retrospect. Predictions-gone-awry always are. Who can help snickering? And who isn't awestruck by the vision of these men who invented RW? First Class Citizen Twice Over
  10. Yay! My first suggestion that's made it to code! And how coincidental that the experience cutoff is... exactly enough for me to qualify. Oh, I feel so accepted now. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I agree with this. I've also learned from all this not to discuss my experiences in this forum, lest kneejerk experts and psuedo-experts turn on me with "helpful tips buried in bullshit". First Class Citizen Twice Over

Weegegirl, One of the reasons I'm intrigued by base is that being a bit of an outlaw activity, it doesn't draw the Authority Protector types. Not as much at least. The base people I've met in person so far have been excellent safety enthusiasts with great experience and detailed knowledge. They're also patient, caring instructors. Most importantly though, they're adults who recognize that I'm an adult who will make his own decisions. One jumper in particular says something that I -REALLY- respect: "Every jump you make is wholly your own decision, but I would like to let you know what I think." Oh, the incredible rarity of finding someone who treats another human being as an equal! Not as if I had his knowledge and experience mind you, but as if I too were responsible for my own fate and nobody else's. Someone who's willing to help me but has no illusions that he controls me! I'm sad to see this interchange. It's so unnecessarily hurtful. Weegegirl is unnerved by the nastiness of the experts. The experts are self-righteous because their comments contain worthwhile information. It's so common to see this in skydiving. Experienced jumpers generously offer their hard-won knowledge but poison the advice with a condescending attitude. Even worse, they publically humiliate the recipient. Sometimes the nastiness is overt and sometimes subtle. Either way it distracts from the original generous intent, turns the recipient defensive, and puts everyones' nerves on edge. In the end, the victim walks away from the experts and all future learning opportunities are lost. How sad. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  14. When modifying a DZ listing, the "Directions" and "Description" fields do not default to the previous values. Thus we have to do a two-window cut'n'paste job. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  16. Anyone who skydives can afford $25 (or whatever similarly trivial amount) per year. It's ridiculous to think otherwise. Nobody has the right to argue a service they use should be free because they enjoy spending their money on whimsical entertainments instead. If Sangiro DID hypothetically institute a $25/year charge and somebody left because of it, you could accurately infer they valued a year's worth of the site less than a single skydive. Anyone who holds the site in such low esteem probably isn't contributing much anyway. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  17. I could afford to do quite a lot more than I do, but I've got other demands and opportunities in my life. I enjoy jumping and try to get some in every month or so, but it's not the money that holds me back. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  18. I think this is brilliant. It would work and it wouldn't drive anyone away. No extra rights -- just peer recognition of who is and isn't a dues-paying member. Brilliant! First Class Citizen Twice Over
  19. I love using the boss as an explanation for everything. "I can't go to dinner with you. The boss is making me work late." And my favorite: "The boss said I could take the afternoon off for skydiving." First Class Citizen Twice Over
  20. The early Safire2s warning labels were identical to the ones on the Safire(1). I got one of the very first Safire2s and was disappointed to see the old logo on the label. Be sure to read the handwritten Model Type on the label. That will specify which one you have. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  21. I'd prefer to pay US$0.05 or 0.10 per posting. Micropayments are easier to swallow and more in keeping with the culture of the internet. They're less likely to turn anyone away and might improve the overall quality of the conversations. Besides, an annual "membership fee" would give people a feeling they had ongoing rights without responsibilities. ("I paid my $25 so I can post all the drivel I want to!") That would diminish the conversation even further than it's already gone. Now if only some clever entrepenuer would devise a good accessible micropayment system! First Class Citizen Twice Over
  22. Great ideas? Not here. We're plodding along using archaic 2001 technology and techniques. Let someone else get sliced up by the leading edge. Our claim to greatness is that we're small. Most of our clients have previously gotten web services from Verio, AOL, Earthlink, etc and hated it. Big companies treat their customers like cheap consumables. We treat them like valued customers. Patents? Nope. Instant riches? Nope. Instead we have a good time, make decent money, and are steadily growing a business that will always act small. We're on the track of comfortable early retirement and that wouldn't happen if we got salaries from someone else. First Class Citizen Twice Over

  24. The forum descriptions in "Forum View" are really lengthy. A useful feature would be something like the "[-]" that would collapse only the descriptions. Then we could see a summary of all the forum activity on one screen. First Class Citizen Twice Over
  25. My company does many things. Our primary services are website design, programming, webhosting, managed servers, and colocation. We also occasionally design and print manage collateral advertising and corporate identities. Our clients are mostly small and medium sized businesses. We also have lots of hosting clients who are individuals with personal ("vanity") domains. I started it 8 years ago by writing and publishing a customer newsletter for a high tech firm. I quickly diversified which saved me when 6 months later the high tech firm was swallowed by a larger firm. First Class Citizen Twice Over
