Yeah, well geez. That was an emotional outburst, huh? I had no idea I cared that much. It appears a lot of people agree with it though. So much for "changing the name" of the sport! First Class Citizen Twice Over

FOX SPORTS - 54321 "Extreme" Sports Show -- Press Clips
narcimund replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh good. Another attempt by TV to lure people away from participating in activities to observing activities. I wonder if people can even tell the difference anymore. First Class Citizen Twice Over -
I've flown in a tricycle gear two-seater powered parachute. The canopy is more familiar than the paragliders but otherwise it's similar to what you're talking about. The FAA in the US considers it an ultralite due to its tiny weight. There is no licensing required and it's perfectly legal to fly in most airspace without restrictions. There are a few exceptions, of course. You cannot fly in certain classes of airspace, over "congested area" (which is legally undefined), or with passengers UNLESS it's for the purpose of instruction. These things are absolutely marvelous. You can literally skim treetops with them. You can power yourself up to 15,000' then power down and glide back to earth. You can buzz along at 50' over countryside and farms, up and down hills, waving at everyone you see. You can land in a big back yard. I want one! First Class Citizen Twice Over

"It was changed"? By who? Who claims the right to enforce proscriptive nomenclature on a sport and a community? It takes more than some self-righteous do-gooder handing down from his throne new acronyms for everyone's good. "FS" my ass! People call it "arr-dub" everywhere I jump and I don't see any reason to change it. "CF" adds approximately nothing to whuffos' understanding and why do we care about whuffos anyway? "RW" and "CRW" have become words through their pronunciation as words, and that's far more alive and interesting than acronyms. There. I've had my disgruntled old-man language moment. Thanks for listening. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I must have missed something, but for many years people used the term CRW. Now suddenly there's a new acronym showing up. Where did this "CF" thing come from and why? Was there something wrong with CRW? Did it offend some minority group? Was it too long? First Class Citizen Twice Over

TSA can order immediate revocation of a pilot license
narcimund replied to narcimund's topic in The Bonfire
Hey, jump pilots! Got any personal enemies in the Federal Gov? Have a neighbor who works at the TSA who doesn't like how often you mow your lawn? Ever said no to a federal employee who made a pass at you? Ever sent an email bitching about the loss of civil rights? You can now lose your pilot's license on the order of the TSA if they determine you're a threat to security. What makes it ridiculous is there is absolutely no definition of "threat". If they say so, that's the end of the story. It could be enough if you're registered to the other major party (not to mention the minor ones which are actually more likely to get you in trouble!) Hell, if you tried to bring your rig on board a commercial flight and got harassed by an overeager TSA screener, you can now lose your license and there's no meaningful appeal. I might even lose my pilot's license just for saying on this forum that it's an unreasonable rule. Wouldn't that be ironic? AOPA report First Class Citizen Twice Over -

I know there are 55 civilians going, but no7rosman is the only one who has spoken up so far. Are any of the other 53 here? Or is the DR dropzone.com-way going to be just the 2 of us? First Class Citizen Twice Over

Just as a reference, -40C is the same as -40F. The two scales happen to cross at that number. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I love that concept: "Humor you're not supposed to enjoy." Stop enjoying that humor! Wipe the smile off your face. We are all not amused! First Class Citizen Twice Over

I recently purchased a Bushnell 1000 which claims to be good for 1500m +/- 1.0m. On a basalt cliff face, I can't get readings higher than 1080m, but that's not bad for many uses. I got it off ebay for $250.00. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Tom, I'm not advocating naming sites. I'm not advocating firey deaths for innocent adventure seekers. I'm not even advocating infant cannibalism. Don't make my humor post into a political manifesto. I think your crusade to withhold public attention to base sites is probably well founded in intelligent, wise motives. However, you don't do your cause any good by making it look ridiculous by taking it to extremes. Restraining ones self from drawing a road map to the nearest 210' cell phone tower is one thing. Pretending there's a safety value in painting a vague euphemism over the name of a bridge with a statewide public holiday, TV coverage, and 10,000 spectators is just plain silly. I think the letters "B", "A", "S", and "E" are too dangerous to use in public. Afterall, if somebody learns what they stand for, they could go find examples of those object types and go jump off them without proper training. For instance, many people own one- and two-story Bs and could climb on top of their own (legally, I might add) and flop off them, potentially snagging an ankle or knocking over the prize rose bush. That's why I propose the sport rename itself "D", "O", "N", "K" which is made up entirely of letters which are not the initials of any jumpable object types. I also propose that all skydivers immediately withhold the names of their DZs lest untrained civilians come to make tandems and potentially cause themselves painful gas and bloating from drinking too much of the free beer. In fact, "Skydiving" should rename itself "Floo-bamphing" to lessen the chances of someone recognizing that we're diving through the sky which is highly dangerous. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Question about relationships? More for married people....
narcimund replied to rhino's topic in The Bonfire
I'll sometimes make plans without talking with my boyfriend, but only if I'm willing to follow through without him. I don't speak for anyone but myself, but I can make opportunities for him and I'm not too bad at predicting what will work and what won't. For obvious reasons, this is N/A. Absolutely private. My mate is my number one priority, far before all of my friends, my work, my home, my hobbies. That's safe for me to say because he's wholly respectful and supportive of their place in my life. I try to do the same for him. But our relationship is as a marriage is, or to be more specific, how a marriage would be in an ideal world. We are two people joined as an unbreakable team, taking on the world together. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

Well, I think that was a hit. I got 2 day jumps plus a night and my bf got 3 and 1. Beautiful DZ with especially nice airplane, views, and people. Thanks William! First Class Citizen Twice Over -
Doug, I'm willing to bet a half-cooked hamburger that there are no more than 5 jumpers in the world that know this means "all other things being equal". I'll bet the pickle and onion they all went to the same college we did. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Well, several weeks later they're still there. It's probably a matter of a lack of free time. Perhaps dropzone.com needs a classifieds moderator who is responsible for keeping them clean of opportunistic parasites. First Class Citizen Twice Over

I don't know who Byron is, but the second part makes sense to me. Some people use the excuse of being grown up to justify their own weakness. When you enjoy something spontaneous or original, they'll say, "That's not mature!" By this they mean, "I used to do spontaneous and original things, but now I'm too broken-hearted to try anymore. Rather than admit I've let my fear of individuality kill my sense of adventure, I'll twist it around and attribute my sluggish personality to a greater sense of adult responsibility. In fact, I'm just too scared to step out of my routine anymore." First Class Citizen Twice Over

The first post in this thread made me think. DMV made a mistake and is annoying, so this is indictment against my home state which aside from the government, I love. It would be like someone posting, "The bathroom at my DZ is always dirty. Another reason why skydiving SUCKS!" First Class Citizen Twice Over
