  1. When I was just starting to learn how to pack reserves, I noted that one of the SLINK's was installed improperly. It was routed thru the lines once, but the riser twice. Only one riser had it misrouted. It had been repacked by the same master riggers several times since the last wash/reassemble. Just so happened that I was learning under them. Talk about the look on their faces. It was MY rig, that I had been jumping. Needless to say, it just motivated me to get my ticket even more. 2. They moved what, mid/late December? Not drinking is no excuse to not attend the parties, trust me, even sober, there's plenty of fun to be had. Even if its just watching and laughing at all the drunk people. 3. I would look for a couple indicators like the PC not fully compressed (hard to explain the look), the grommets not stacked and whatnot... but even then, it could be a number of things and none of them mean that the AAD has fired. Hell, any of those could be just sloppy rigging. The best preventative measure is to do a damn gear check before you put it on. I check my gear after I pack it, and again before I put it on. It only takes a minute but the life you save could be your friends! 4. I wouldn't put money on that. The only way I could see a defective cutter not interfering with the reserve coming out is if it was placed under the free bag, on the bottom of the packtray. Even if it pinches the loop, the PC, flaps and freebag are free to deploy. 6. Today at z-hills we ALL got put on wind holds. After the first hold, most of us sat back and shot the shit, they put a load up, and we watched the landings and laughed. Sure, I probably could've put my canopy down in it and walked away from it, but sometimes the hardest part of what we do is knowing when to sit down and say NO. The sky isn't going anywhere, its much nicer to watch the weather at the DZ than from the hospital window! 7. PD has a production facility in Deland, FL. IIRC not all PD canopies are made there though. The riggers I was working under told me that they use different thread colors for the canopies coming from (Honduras, I believe). But that's just hear say. 11. A 'D' license is not required to be an AAF-I. He was saying that you could do AFF-I duty for a few years, but if you want to progress to tandem, you have to get your D (and the required night jumps) I suggest a course in reading comprehension. I comprehended just fine, he just wrote it backwards. 14. Always have a backup of the backup Preferably one off site, or atleast disconnected in some sort of protection (fire/water) Hell, I got a medal for recovering some data once. CSM said 'Either you get this data back, and I'll give you an AAM and a CSM coin, or I chop off your balls.' The fact that I was a satellite communications guy had nothing to do with it. (Yes, I still have my balls) "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
  15. I agree with labrys, if its something you absolutely must have, go on ebay, find a drive with the same model number and buy it. I have saved data for a few customers that way. On to the next point... backup early, backup often! My NAS now has 2x2tb drives, with 2x750gb drives that still have most of the data, so even a complete RAID failure, I still have almost everything I need to get back to where I am now. 16. Without looking at the manual, its probably just tacking the SLINK tab to stay inside the riser. Shouldn't randomly disconnect any lines, but it never hurts to err on the side of caution. There have been a few cases that I've seen/heard of where a loose SLINK tab has gotten caught in other lines (from a different riser) and such. The one video I've seen the guy cleared the problem after screwing with it for a few seconds. Not exactly something you want to worry about on your last chance, when you're already low, and flying a canopy you've never flown for the first time, possibly near sunset, and into an unknown landing area. 18. I feel ya. Just got out of the army myself, 5 trips across the ocean for me. Wears ya out quick! Just keep in mind, you're going to want to be current before you start planning on doing a bandit jump. 19. Funny you should ask... I just got tired of trying to get the fucking ratchets to line up the right way, so I spun them 180* and stuck them in like that. I'm going to stop by the skysystems tent tomorrow and have them show me.
