  1. thanks Keith, i did search but overlooked this one! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  2. i STILL haven't got round to sorting this out - besides the obvious of going up in the plane and looking out and down with a JM, what sort of preparation should/could i be doing at the dz while im on the ground to help with learning about this stuff? Anything?? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  3. i know, but i wondered specifically if any skydivers had tried a more "unofficial" version "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  4. anyone tried to "tow" their friend on their boat/truck with an open main attached to them? Im figuring it would probably be a better bet that someone has tried this on water, but then you can never assume anything. Not that i have much of an idea that this is even something remotely feasible, but i figured if a few skydivers got together and had access to a speed boat, someone might have tried it over the years. 5. thanks spike i will give them a try tomorrow. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  6. I rent/house share and have no insurance at all. That's life on the edge for you. If you figure anything useful out post it here so we can all see. Gus will do. At the moment it's looking like unless i can find a regular insurance company to cover me for the 2 weeks i'm away, i too will be dancing with lady luck by the light of the moon etc "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  7. LOL ok I just spoke to Airportz (sp?) as advertised in the mag - they dont do anything other than a yearly premium for cover - which is £5 for every £100 of value plus 5% tax - which works out to be about as much as home contents insurance! Gus another one for you - do you have home contents insurance and if so, you might find your rig is covered under that. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  8. thanks Gus - so what do you do now with regards to insuring your rig when you take it abroad? Use regular trav insurance and just get them to type something out saying that each canopy/part is separate and of separate value? If so, who do you use? Thanks! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  9. i know this comes up a lot, and i did search but wasn't able to find anything on my situation. Im a renter but dont have contents insurance, hence my rig is not covered. What i want to know is definitively who i should get insurance from before going to the US next month when i take my rig with me? I would like to hear from any people in the UK who have got it insured through their travel insurance, where the main is recognised as a separate piece of equipment - in case it gets chopped and blows into the next state etc. Most travel companies insure ONE item for max of £500 i think, so they might argue the entire rig and contents incl. CYPRES is worth no more than £500 - which of course is not what i want. Thanks all! Edited to add: PS on a side note, can anyone who rents in the UK recommend a GOOD CHEAP insurer - i really should i guess get contents insurance, but i never got round to it. Thanks again! 10. I disagree with your last point - read this post here - you might feel differently after doing so. Keeping one's mouth shut I wouldn't consider advising ANYONE on issues of safety - not that i think Michele was doing that in her post, but that's not the issue - pointing an inexperienced jumper in the direction of, or taking them to, an instructor or highly experienced jumper when they need help/advice, is. You might have 5000 jumps and know what you are on about, but me with just over 100, i probably wouldn't even know if i was telling someone something that could potentially endanger them or not, and i'm not going to take that chance by giving out "tips" and "advice" just because everyone else on my load does. 11. dude not at all, please stay and discuss here. I totally hear what you are saying, but skydiving is dangerous enough as it is, and the risks are not associated to static factors. Sure we all have to go someday -and some things are beyond our control - but a lot IS within our control and there is much we can learn and think about to help us prolong the time we do have here. 12. forget about pedanticisms of what the initial question does/doesn't mean and study and think about what has been written by the author, it may well help you to save your life someday. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  13. Huge Boss is a top name male fashion designer. I own precisely none of this wares. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  14. i know some skydivers are supposed to be supremely fashion conscious, but this is getting ridiculous... PS aside from the alti being upside down, the chest and leg straps not done up, and a jump ship with one jumper but several rigs on it, i guess you could say this was a pretty accurate depiction "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  15. Do you mean "nervous" or "excited"? Because when alot of time goes by for me (4 weeks) between jumps I get very excited about going back, but I also get a little nervous too (until I get there and go up in the plane). I think it's good that I get a little nervous too, it reminds me that this is dangerous and that I should take care about being careful and not forgetting to jump smart. both nervous and excited. The day i stop being slightly nervous on a jump is the day im putting my gear up for sale. Mainly excited though "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  16. if you are serious, i think this is a very narrow minded, not to mention selfish attitude. Skydiving is dangerous - why make it more so by not bothering to read what someone with vast experience is telling us newbies, ESPECIALLY when they are trying to help us stay alive? Yes you could get hit by a bus tomorrow - you will get hit a lot quicker if you walk into the road with your eyes closed though. People also seem to forget skydiving is more than just about your life. It's about the lives of the people you jump with and go up in a plane with. By being a better, safer skydiver, more aware of how to look out for yourself, you will hopefully put yourself AND others in less dangerous predicaments by having this extra knowledge. Don't be surprised if you find not many people wanting to jump with you in the future with this kind of "so what, the world is gonna end someday and we all have to go sometime" type of attitude. 17. oh damn that human man looked crazy - that must have been a buzz shooting that and coming down near all those people cheering! One of these days i'll make it out there... "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

  20. if buying second hand, be sure to make sure it is a Thomas Sports made SF and not one under license to PISA (defunct Parachute Industries South African, now Aerodyne). The SF they made is not TSO'd for use in the States, unless you are a non US resident and it is legal to jump in your home country - in which case you can jump it there, but can't let anyone else jump it. I own a PISA made SF and it's great! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  21. i haven't jumped since November, and just thinking about jumping gets the nerves jangling. The Let is back next weekend - thank the Lord! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  22. why? It doesn't surprise me that a lot of us out there - myself included - still don't fully understand not only HOW to successfully calculate exit separation (i'm still a watch the ground/count sort of person) but don't seem to care about the significance of doing so properly either. It's still one of the scariest parts of the jump for me (thinking that the person/group leaving after me won't have left enough separation between my exit and theirs). Does anyone else on a solo jumps sometimes look up to see the next person out to see how long they have left for separataion, or is that just me? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
