  1. It may be clear to you, but it is clear to me otherwise. The definition of witness does not in any way imply someone else: wit·ness (wtns) n. 1. a. One who can give a firsthand account of something seen, heard, or experienced: a witness to the accident. In the context of the regulation, the word "another" refers specifically and only to "skydiver". The word "another" would refer to the other subjects if and only if the other subjects did not have their own determinant article. For the word "another" to refer to the other subjects, the sentence would have to read: "Jumps for license and rating qualifications must be signed by another licensed skydiver, pilot, or USPA National or FAI Judge who witnessed the jump. " The regulation as stands is: Jumps for license and rating qualifications must be signed by another licensed skydiver, a pilot, or a USPA National or FAI Judge who witnessed the jump. Grammatically it is without question the only way to interpret the regulation. The way to decide if the determinant article refers to multiple subjects is to remove the first subject. You would never say"... must be signed by another a pilot" so "another" does not apply to "pilot". It has its own determinant article ("a"). I will agree that this is probably not the interpretation that USPA intended, but it is the only one that grammatically makes sense. The regulation as currently written allows any skydiver who is a pilot to witness their own jumps. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  2. I read the section and it appears I can witness my own jumps since I am a licensed pilot? I guess USPA National and FAI judges can also witness their own jumps? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  3. Let me start off by saying I am no hurry to kill myself and will follow the recommendation of 200 jumps. However, I have yet to read a single incident involving injury or death that was directly involved with the distraction of wearing a camera too soon. It makes sense to me not to do it, but I don't believe it can be proven that there is a much higher chance of getting hurt or killed. Everybody in this sport was a Whuffo once. We all had to evaluate risks and overcome common misconceptions about the danger of skydiving. I think that as a group we are people who don't accept anectdotal evidence over empirical evidence. Show me the statistics. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  4. The type of fabric will make a greater difference than the color. This is more a physics question than a gear question. All things being equal except for color, the darker the color, the more photons will be absorbed and not re-emitted. The energy of the photon would heat up the material. That is why white clothes on a hot summer day are cooler than black clothes. The darker the canopy, the greater the wear and tear based on this heating/cooling cycle. 5. I just take my regular cellphone in an inside pocket. If it gets broken, I got bigger problems than a broken phone. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  6. I think most tandems going along for a skydiving ride get a major kick out of looking like a skydiver. If you dress them up in army surplus it might affect your bottom line. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

  8. There is an billboard for the dropzone right next to the Ferry in Playa Del Carmen. I went to Cozumel last year and let the kids ride on the dolphins. Great time. And for the other people hijacking the thread - I have also dove Fiji and yes - it is the best place in the planet I have dove so far. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  9. It doesn't have anything to do with names of competing drop zones. It is all about Search Engine Optimization(SEO). If you live in Cincinnati and want to find a place to go skydiving, you would probably google "SKYDIVE CINCINNATI". By using those words on your DZ webpage, you are more likely to be found. IF there is a competitor called "SKYDIVE CINCINNATI" that is just a coincidence. Nothing nefarious here. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  10. That is true, but I was advocating keeping the USPA the way it is and not making it more powerful. Every time a recommendation becomes a BSR we lose the ability to decide for ourselves. In addition, the more BSR's that USPA produces the more liability it incurrs and the expense to protect against that liability increases. That expense will be passed on to the USPA members. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  11. Don't worry - it isn't that unusual to have sensory overload on your first few jumps. My first static line jump was in 1978 and I remember to this day the feeling that I totally blanked out from the time I released the strut until I saw a canopy overhead. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  12. Be careful what you wish for or USPA could become like PADI is in the Scuba Industry. PADI has thousands of the equivilant of BSR's. It also has a strangle hold on the instructors. $192.50 a year to be allowed to teach. You also can't teach a PADI student without purchasing PADI approved Liability insurance. The minimum charge on that is $688.00 a year. I have read a lot of posts complaining that USPA isn't a strong authority. Someday it will be and we will probably all regret it. logic puzzles

Although I figured it out it isn't completely valid. The assumption is the other two people are bright enough to reach the logical conclusion that if 'A' is red and 'B' can see blue, then 'C' must be that blue. I ('A') could still be red and 'B' and 'C' are idiots. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  14. There was 'damage' inflicted, although it was undone by the settlement, and it was not the employees who were damaged, but the US Government. To quote the SSA, "Remember, it’s your earnings, not the amount of taxes you paid or the number of credits you’ve earned, that determine your benefit amount. When we figure that amount, we base it on your average earnings over your lifetime." Since all the earnings were reported correctly, no employee was at risk of losing a single penny in retirement benefits. There would be a shortfall of collected money to provide the benefit. It is ok for the government to give itself a loan from the pool of SSA money with a worthless IOU, but if you are the owner of a corporation that does it you go to jail. for more information see: https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/isss/main.html For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  15. As a previous poster astutely pointed out, "Therefore it is not up to the non-believer to prove the non-existence of an entity, the burden lays completely on he who suggests the existence." I don't have to prove that the gate didn't exist, you have to prove it did since you are making the claim. Show me one archeaological piece of evidence or contemporary mention of the gate. Google it all you want, you can't. Sad enough that you can't support metaphysical claims, now you are making 'unbelievers' prove the lack of existence of a physical gate? Don't you agree that the person who makes the claim for the existence of a physical object has the burden of proof to show that object exists? I am not talking about Jesus or the Easter Bunny, but rather a physical artifact that you say existed. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  16. I don't know the details about how the money that supposed to be submitted to the IRS was spent and neither do you. Like Scrumpot, I will try to explain using generally accepted accounting principles that are not specific to this case. Payroll taxes are accrued and paid quarterly. They are a business expense just like advertising, charity deductions, training, membership dues, and many more. There is no clear audit trail of the money used to pay other expenses if one expense is not paid. The DOJ press release indicated, "From 2004 through 2006, Hart used SMS corporate funds for expenditures including, but not limited to, funding his skydiving team’s attendance at skydiving competitions, funding other skydiving organizations, and paying for his annual membership and expenses at a local country club." It could just as well said, "From 2004 through 2006, Hart used SMS corporate funds for expenditures including, but not limited to, charitible contributions, employee health care, and providing assistance to terminally ill children." Both statements are equally true. Damn - I'm not following my own advice and am still feeding a troll. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  17. Holy crap dude - talk about throwing stones. There is absolutely no archaeological evidence that such a door existed in Jerusalem, nor is there any description of such a door in any writing from the period. Apparently you know something that credible scholars don't. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  18. You are absolutely correct. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  19. From my point of view, the biggest problem is 200 minimum is just a recommendation and not a BSR. I have 38 jumps and would love to do a night jump, but I know it isn't go to happen until I get a 'B' license. No USA Dropzone is going to let me do it because it is a BSR. I would be an idiot to disregard the recommendation, but within USPA Regulations to jump with a camera. On the other hand, I assume the DZ owner can enforce regulations above and beyond USPA's BSRs as long as they are uniformly enforced. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  20. It is probable that the saying about the camel and the needle's eye was proverbial already in the time of Jesus. In the oldest extant Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of Matthew, the Sinaitic Manuscript, The Vatican Manuscript No. 1209, and the Alexandrian Manuscript, the word ka' me los appears. The indications are that Matthew wrote his account of the life of Jesus first in Hebrew and then translated it into Greek. He knew, therefore exactly what Jesus said and meant, and hence he knew the proper Greek word and that word according to the oldest extant Greek manuscripts, was ka' me los. There is good reason therefore, for believing "camel" to be the correct rendering. It wasn't until 9th and 10th century manuscripts that the word for 'rope' was used. 21. I am a little surprised USPA hasn't made camera flying a rating. I'm a PADI Scuba instructor and that organization makes a lot of money issuing ratings of questionable value. As long as it is just a recommendation it will carry the weight and significance thereof. There is a big difference between I advise you not to do it and you can't do it. It makes more sense to require specific training for the activity combined with a magic jump number. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  22. Stop feeding the troll. It only makes him bigger. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  23. Isn't it standard procedure to practice jumping a new camera setup solo before doing RW with it, or am I just a newbie who is regurgitating what I was told? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
  24. Thank you for sharing this. I have a GO PRO but have decided not to use it with my low jump numbers (insert golf clap and/or rant about BSR's versus recommendations here). I was thinking about putting the mount on my helmet just so I wouldn't lose it. After seeing your photos, I'll keep the mount in my bag and if I lose it, buy another. (And yes I know it comes with 4 mounts, but I put them on other sports helmets). Thanks again for sharing. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
