I think golf gloves would be fine. I would personally cut the tip off the index finger and thumb so I could have 100% tactile feedback on my rsl and hackey. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Since we aren't in winter glove season, the winter gloves woud have to be purchased online from an industrial supply company. The 96650 gives enough dexterity to handle most situations in sub zero temperatures. Some companies that sell the 96650 are: http://www.industrialfirstaidsystems.com/products/Waterproof-Winter-with-PVC-Grip-96650-%28-PAIR-%29.html http://www.toughweld.com/westchester/safety-gear/gloves http://www.thefind.com/sports/info-pro-series-fleece For normal use above 0 degrees, I would recommend getting any high dexterity fingerless mechanics gloves. The first link above has the pair I wear - model 86700. They are called 'carpenter's gloves' because the index finger, middle finger, and thumb aren't covered. This allows carpenters to handle nails and Skydivers to handle RSL's. By far the best bang for the buck if you aren't skydiving in subzero temperatures: http://www.industrialfirstaidsystems.com/products/Carpenter-3x2%E2%84%A2-with-Open-Fingers-86700-%28Pair%29.html For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)
DiverMike replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
And AC 105.2 D doesn't contain any new information about canopy downsizing and/or low turns. Defintely didn't include any wording that I would consider "a shot across the bow". For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Yippee - I finally as a sub 100 jump wonder get to contribute to a thread where I have expertise. I work at a glove company that sells wholesale $130,000,000.00 worth of gloves annually. The best glove I have used for skydiving is a mechanics type glove. I use fingerless in the summer and full finger with a 'hipora' lining in the fall/winter to keep the cold wind off my fingers. Less than $30.00 at any Home Depot. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I'm one of those people who goes out of his way to make sure people who continue to drive in a lane that is closing don't get to merge in at the last moment. I put my front bumper 2 inches away from the car in front of me and ignore any attempts to let them merge in. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Are there really that many crooked skydivers?
DiverMike replied to catfishhunter's topic in The Bonfire
I bought my rig on DZ.com and didn't have problems. It helped that I was sending the check to an officer on an Army Base. I talked to him on the phone about his MOS and he was either legit or an extremely well prepared liar. As it turns out he was legit and I got the rig. I guess if someone walks and talks like a skydiver I would generally trust them. YMMV. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)
DiverMike replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I stand corrected. It is conceivable an AC could be issued that limits wing loading or low turns based on the FAR 105.5: No person may conduct a parachute operation, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from an aircraft, if that operation creates a hazard to air traffic or to persons or property on the surface. The AC would have to indicate that a high wing loading or low turns are hazardous to air traffic or to persons or property on the surface. Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)
DiverMike replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I completely agree that AC's can carry weight when worded correctly, but 'best practice' is just advice. Since you are quoting 105.2c, consider the difference between: All prospective skydivers are urged to receive a physical examination prior to their first jump. The physician should be informed of the purpose of the examination. and: A certificated parachute rigger or the person making the jump must have packed the main parachute within 120 days before the date of its use. One is enforceable, the other is not. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)
DiverMike replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't know - the only thing I saw that might vaguely address skydiving is "will provide best practices for using equipment." I think reading into it that we are on somebody's radar for enforcement is hopeful thinking from all those who are tired of seeing people kill themselves and others. An advisory circular describing 'best practices' carrys no weight of enforcement, but it is a step forward. If the best practice includes wing loading charts based on experience, or if it enumerates rules for turns below 1000' we might be going somewhere. I don't suspect anything like that will be in best practices for using equipment. I have never been a proponent of getting the FAA more involved in our sport, but I am starting to rethink my stance. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
It appears to me she was obstructing an LEO attempting to perform his duty. I think most juries would consider grabbing a cop while he is trying to subdue someone else an offensive stance or attack on the policeman. I don't see that he used excessive force at any time. Did you get hit by the Alternate Minimum Tax this Year?
DiverMike replied to DiverMike's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not sure if I should blame the democrats or republicans, but based on income levels from 1989 I am somehow wealthy and must give thousands of dollars more to help the little people not pay taxes. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
That isn't far of a leap. If it isn't submitted for tracing, it can't be traced to anywhere including the US. 68% of the guns could not be traced to any point on this (or any other) planet. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I'm sorry - I didn't get the memo. Is today National Quote a Pedophile day? (Technically she was at least an ephebophile since she was suspended from her teaching job for seducing several female students older than 13 and younger than 18). She also fought to abolish age of consent laws so adults couldn't get in trouble for having sex with minors. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

You got me. I obviously replied to the wrong post. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

So it is your assertation that nothing on DZ.COM is reliable? Or is it every rigger/instructor at a dropzone is a more valuable resource than DZ.COM? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
-
I also find it annoying when instructors/riggers indicate to me that I shouldn't use DZ.com as a reliable resource, especially when it pertains to service bulletins and FAR's that are posted here. I am a big boy and can discern fact from fiction. I don't use DZ.COM to learn any skills that are better acquired at the drop zone through personal instruction, but I find it quite useful for 'what is legal' discussions. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

What are you doing with your argus?
DiverMike replied to Jbag's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
wrong on all accounts. All of the service bulletins I have read have suggested that it be removed prior to the next jump. Every single one of them said 'should'. Not a single one of them said 'must'. It is against recommendations to pack an Argus into some rigs during a reserve repack. Until you need a repack, you are completely 'legal' jumping the Argus. (Though maybe not particularly smart). I had an Argus in my Dolphin and took it out the day Altico said you couldn't use it. I purchased a CYPRESS with 3 years left and had it put in. 3 days later Altico said it was OK to put an Argus in a Dolphin since the cutter is below the PC. I, for one, am not going to use the Argus at all until they clear up a few things, but I am not going to throw it away either. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
I get airsick and seasick quite easily. I guess I really enjoy throwing up since I am also a scuba instructor and pilot. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

If your corporation is a Subchapter S corporation, (which it probably will be) your earnings (or loss) flows through to your 1040. At 30,000 view: if you are 'losing' money your loss will flow to your 1040 on a Schedule K. If you have appropriate income (like from rental properties) you can offset your income with your business loss. Conversely, if you have rental loss you can offset business income from your K1. This tax benefit only applies if you can offset business income with a business loss. You can't offset earned wages with business losses. I am not an accountant, but I filed my own 1120S for 10 years. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

She looks like she could crack walnuts with her ass, but I'm not sure looking at a canyon qualifies as an 'action shot'. Now if she had some walnuts . . . For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I meant sniveling of the reserve. I am another poster in this thread not trying to offend but to understand. I have thought about setting my AAD higher (most recently after watching Booth's interview). I am trying to understand the down side and if that is the rare occurence of exiting a low flying crippled plane and then becoming unconcious, I don't see that down side happening very often. I wouldn't expect my main to be still sniveling at 1200 feet since I pull at 3500, but if I lost altitude awareness and pulled at 2000, I could see the downside of not giving an extra second for the main to inflate. Again, I would rather have the extra couple hundred feet cushion near the hard cold ground. DZ.COM is a pretty good resource to me for questions like "Why shouldn't I ..." As always, I will check with my real live instructors. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I appreciate someone slapping down an unknown beggar. The OP reminds me of people at work trying to collect money for an uncle/cousin/neighbor who lost his job/pick up truck/left testicle. I blame KMills for winning the vacation based on her skydiving photo and not offering to take me (not that I would have gone). For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
-
Quote I like to examine all the possibilities as much as the next guy, but how vanishingly small is the probability of this scenario as compared to the advantage of adding a couple hundred feet to address snivel or burbles on a normal AAD activation? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

It hasn't been 'retired' in all rigs or all jurisdictions so to indicate it has is wrong. I have a Dolphin and it is still legal For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.
