New Aerodyne Icon Risers...(dive loops, hard housing)
upndownshop replied to aubsmell's topic in Gear and Rigging
Sun Path Easy Grip Toggles and Dive Loops. The Dive Loops were designed by PD's Jay Moleski (sp?) have been tested for 18 months and released at PIA last Jan. in Jacksonville. The Easy Grip Toggles were released at the same time. The toggles are standard with the new Odyssey while the new dive loops are an option. The loops lay nicely with the new internal rise covers on the Odyssey. The covers are designed so that you dont have to use them if you choose. The bottom corners of the reserve tray are now seamless, nothing for risers to grab and no need for additional protection. Figured I would join the band wagon on this one. Isn't R&D fun A.? -
Not to many 2004 cars have distributor caps. That is probably true for most, not sure what she is driving but "Have you driven a Ford lately?" I did and wont again. Well at least own one.
-
She always did "You can leave your hat on" brain lock......who is that....damm. ahh Joe Coker sp?
-
Cracked distributer cap can play a part too. Easy to fix. Good luck with that girl.

How often do you pack yourself?
upndownshop replied to Antidote's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Gave up packing mains 15 years ago, had about 3000 of them by the time I was 16. Reserve is left to my rigger. Still no cutaways, came close but not yet. No, no jinx, been saying it for a while, twice after saying it came REALLY close but still no need. Been spanked a few times, had a toggle wrapped completly around both risers then stowed properly in place, but was able to clear it after opening. I have learned that packers will blame hard openings, and line twist on body position. So figure it goes both ways. Landed told packer "hard opening" he said, Body Position. Landed told packer "line twist" he said "body Position" Landed told packer "great opening" he said "thanks" I said no "body position" ha! -
Hey Dave sounds like a great time. If you chat with him again would you mind suggesting that he go to SkyFest and do his ceremony there. We are going to try and break the standing record of 24 maggots on their knees in the peas at Spaceland! Bill Newell (founder of the SCR) may be attending again. Did you get your shirts? Thanks Dave!

QuotePieings should only occur at jump milestones, the first one being at 100. There's some debate as to when they should occur after 100, but definitely on any multiple of 1000.Quote If it means anything the original tradition I remember is pieing for the 1000 intervals. Its only in the past 5 years I have seen the lower jump numbers in play. But either way,,,I missed them ALL!! Too late now. Have to catch me at 2000. But I've heard they might stick me in the dunk tank during SkyFest 05. Thats not so bad, July in Texas. If you are on a Pieing jump get out of your stuff fast, sometimes the jumpsuit gets it too if they get tired of waiting on you.

Packing, think thats why dad had three.

2 Updates for SF05 Derek Thomas owner of Sun Path Products Inc. makers of the Javelin Odyssey will hold a Q& A Seminar. He did this at PIA this year and it was really great! Ask Anything you want. See the new features released this year on the rig. This is a great opportunity for, users, dealers, and riggers. Proper fitting, closing tricks, RSL and much more. I have arranged an auction to be held Sat. night with Wings, PD and RWS. This year I will include the normal raffle prizes in the auction. Which if you have been to a SF you know about how much we get. Altimeters, audibles, helmets, certificates, much more. PD has donated a Spectre 210 with new lines and the canopy only has about 200 jumps. All of those proceeds from the Spectre go to the JSF. Wings has donated a custom container %100 covered just make the best bid and its yours. RWS will have new containers as well. Get some new gear CHEAP! Save your money and bid. Thats all for now.....Is it over......... who knows that answer?

Mandy and Ernie will be handling the SCR's in Dallas if anyone heads that way. Many many many maggots on their way!!!
-
Your doing awesome!! Pleases me if that helps.. Do we know who Steve made as the LO for SCR's from now till SF05?
-
Amanduh may know who they finally picked. I'll see if I can get a hold of her and find out. Last years ceremony was small we want to make it bigger, so if you are able to help that would be great! This year you get to poor!!! Thanks
-
Thats what it is all about!! Great stuff. If anyone is in Spaceland, SKyFest has delegated an organizer to do SCR's from now till the event in July. Go get your first 8 way and then do your ceremony at SkyFest '05 and be a part of the largest SCR ceremony. Our current record is 23 maggots on their knees, we need to break that. Celebrate one of skydivings oldest traditions. great idea Lisa! Pay it Skyward

Wasn't she there for SF 04?

Amanduh Thank you so much for your story about your experience of SkyFest, and i must say that ultimately that makes you a "Jerry's Kid". With that in mind I feel I must post another testimonial of another Scholarship winner who jumped at the same DZ as Jerry, but never met him. This was posted on Dropzone.com March 19, 2004 You did ask a question I would like to address. What it was like being a Scholarship recipient. Last year, the recip's were chosen by our AFFI's and staff. I'd busted my ass all year. There were many that had. They could have chosen several others, and no one would've batted an eye. When my name was called to go up and receive my plaque, it was one of the more rewarding moments this sport has afforded me. Very proud... vindicating, maybe. The award wasn't a huge sum, it'd been spread out over about a half dozen recip's over several DZ's. But WAS enough to make the difference between taking a coach course or not. I wouldn't have taken it had I not had that money to apply. What was really interesting to me though... and I don't think I ever told you this.. was how people reacted to the scholarship winners. Those that had never known your father offered quick, textbook congrats. In their mind, it seemed like they felt I'd won a raffle or something. Those that had known your father reacted very differently. It really meant something to them. I could see it in their eyes. Several crossed the hanger to shake my hand and tell me how your dad had made a difference to them in some way. It was important to them that I understand that he was the kind of man that for decades would kinda gather all the little A licensed ducklings together and teach them, slowly and carefully bring them up to speed and into the fold. One of the Jerry's Kids called me about a week later just to talk about him. What she said surprised me. "Jerry wasn't loved and respected because he was a great skydiver. He wasn't. At least, not by today's standards. There's a bunch of folk around here that could fly circles around him. He was loved because he never tired of teaching and giving and helping young skydivers love and understand the sport. He did it for decades, and never tired of giving just a little bit more the next day." That was the reason I applied the Scholarship towards the coach rating rather than, say, tunnel time. I felt it honored the spirit of the man for whom the scholarship commemorates. A man I never met. Who still managed to help me through the actions and comments of those whom he'd taught. It seemed that he not only spent a lot of time helping out the new jumpers, but he sorta set a tone of giving-back that others emulated in kind. There's no doubt in my mind that some of those that have, and continue to help me, are doing so in order to pay-forward what Jerry had done for them. I'll follow Skyfest wherever you want to take it J. Partially because it's a great boogie, partially because you're a good person and I categorically like to support the efforts of good people, but also because I like the idea of embracing a boogie whose profits fund a scholarship that commemorates the memory of a man who was not known for winning medals, but for honest act of giving back to the people that loved the sport. Your dad's been gone several years now, but every few months I'll still hear someone mention his name. He touched a lot of people at SDD. There's a lot to be said for that. Anyway. I'd been meaning to mention that to you for months, but as you keep moving your silly ass back and forth to Florida, I never seemed to get around to it. I hope this has brightened your day just a little bit, and answered your question of hat it felt like to get the scholarship... And I'll see ya in Houston. Robin

Thank you, it means more than you know. I cant take all the credit, we have alot of people in the past and some new ones that help out. SD Spaceland has stepped up this year and is really pitching in. It does get really tough sometimes, but somehow come Sunday evening that warm fuzzy feeling hits your heart and it all becomes worth it. People are safer, made a bunch of jumps, helped each other by sharing experiences and hopefully we have helped keep someone in the sport, even if it is just a little longer it makes a difference. Thank you all and blue skies forever! J

Finger Pocket on a cutaway/reserve pillow?
upndownshop replied to skydiverek's topic in Gear and Rigging
If you are cutting away with left hand you will put your four fingers into the pocket. If you are cutting away with your right hand, your THUMB will fit nicely in the pocket. In both case you will get more positive grip and more "pull force" to get the pillow out of velcro. I love the concept but i think it is backwards, seems like it is pushing for a left hand cutaway. If you pull with the left you are forcing the cables to come out at a 90 degree turn, and it would be more difficult to pull straigth down with the left hand no leverage? Again the idea is great, but i think it should be reversed. And i think you have less grip and pull ability with a right thumb inserted. If i am not mistaken it is set up perfect for tandems right hand right fingers curl around and into the pocket. Their parachutist add shows a left hand pull and it looks like the pic is reversed, it LOOKS like the cables run down not up, must be flipped??? Just my opinion.. "Right Now" "Left last" -
I second that!
-
The one my mother always said during a cutaway in the 70's was: Lord get me out of this one and I wont do it again till next time" And of course since it was either me or my bro. packing our was: Lord let her reserve bring her down softly so we dont get grounded."
-
That ? has some variables. But just to play it safe go big with the 235 till you feel comfy again, its what you know, then make your change. You will be just fine Have fun!

I do remember that! Boy that was a weekend, spent 6 months organizing a party (boogie) planned on making a ton of jumps. Friday i made 8 was planning to do 8 more on SAT. When the day came it hit me (really hard) , this isnt a party, i am burying my father. I made one jump on Sat and it was the ash dive, and really i shouldnt have, it was tough. Damm i could have loaned you gear!! I would have taken care of you ...say with a Stiletto 120....you would have been ok ...everyone is doing it!!!!
-
yeah for sure... well I guess if it tech. starts on thursday then I did a jump at skyfest... wyatt will be back for his second year as well... this time now down plane with three canopies...Quote Yes but you hadn't registered yet maybe you should make the third canopy the powered parachute, that way you can have a "go around" BTW in the 4 years of SF: over 10,000 skydives made ZERO serious injuries (don't worry, no jinx, i say it every year, i think jerry takes care of the weather and the jumpers for us) 11 cutaways: 3 of the mains landed in parking lott. $10,000 awarded in scholarships to a total of 33 upjumpers So I must thank each and evey one of you!! Its all because of YOU!
