Slowest start to Atlantic hurricane season…
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, the 'cost' is to homeowners. You know "little people". And there's no benefit to the wealthy & powerful. So yeah, why should they do anything to mitigate AGW? -
I wouldn't be totally surprised to see an Onion headline along the lines of: "Onion to shut down publication. Editors no longer able to make up stuff stupider than what Trump actually says."
-
Seen elsewhere: We need a democrat to introduce a REALLY strict gun control bill. Name it the "Protect Donald Trump" law. The Rs would be forced to either enact gun control or admit they don't care about Trumpty Dumpty. Watch Republican heads explode. On a more serious note: The charges against the guy in Florida are possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated (removed) serial number. So it appears that if he didn't have a prior record and hadn't tried to remove the serial number from the rifle... He wouldn't be facing any charges. Fascinating.
-
Just for the record, you are a REALLY sick puppy (not just the above joke, but most of the recent ones). That's a compliment, not a PA.

Yup. That's exactly what I was referring to. I didn't want to go into detail because Soviet history isn't a super popular subject in the US. Typically they had at least a 'concept of a plan' for succession, there were alliances (and rivalries) in the Politburo. Mostly they wanted a smooth transition. Revolutions tend to get messy, they put the rest of the leadership at very high risk and they leave the country vulnerable to outside intervention.
-
I don't know about that. Typically, when the cult leader dies, the cult dies along with it. The same thing with a dictatorship. Unless there's a clear successor*, who can mesmerize the fools as well as the original leader, it usually ends up in infighting and chaos. Watching Vance try to take over the MAGA movement would be hilarious. As is typical with dictators (both actual and 'wannabe') Trumpty Dumpty has made sure that anyone actually capable of leading doesn't stay around. *Two notable exceptions are DPRK (North Korea) and the old Soviet Union. Kim Il Sung made sure his son would take over, and subsequent sons have done the same. It's a 'family dynasty' very similar to medieval Europe. In the old Soviet Union, there were often a few different individuals who were capable of leading. And sometimes a few who thought they were, but the Politburo didn't agree. Because the secondary leaders wanted to stay in power, they made sure there was a reasonably smooth transfer of power when the leader died.

Tandems on First Pass and Experienced Higher?
wolfriverjoe replied to brianhay@protonmail.com's topic in Safety and Training
Correct. But, unlike what Rob says, the rules require it to be used by crew above 12500 for more than 30 minutes, anytime above 14000, and provided to passengers above 15k. FAR 91.211 https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-F/part-91/subpart-C/section-91.211 I never heard of tandems being put out well below fun jumpers like the OP claimed. Also unaware of any DZ regularly taking fun jumpers to 17k. I would think ATC might notice regular 'above oxygen required' altitudes and perhaps a ramp check might happen. I never got any 'official word', but I remember that some high altitude (oxygen required and used) formation attempts got the attention of the local FSDO, and the DZO either got a phone call or a quick visit to make sure he knew that altitudes that high (18k) required oxygen. It was a friendly and mostly informal contact, although I'd kinda guess that if he hadn't answered "yes, we are aware of the rules, have oxygen to use and will be using it", it might have gone differently. Again, info from a casual conversation with 'non-management DZ staff'. -
It's been abundantly clear for quite a while that the porn model wants NOTHING to do with him. I found this in about 10 seconds. Further searching will undoubtedly find a lot more. https://www.tiktok.com/@betches/video/6903608019867684101

If it burns the Republican party, in it's current form all the way to the ground, that would NOT be a 'bad thing', IMO. FFS, Darth Cheney is voting for Biden. Fun fact: The "Haitians are eating dogs" garbage was started by... Neo-Nazis. https://www.npr.org/2024/09/10/nx-s1-5107320/jd-vance-springfield-ohio-haitians-pets This story mentions the Blood Tribe, I've seen other reports that include the Patriot Front too.

One reason he faces fewer charges is because he was CONVICTED of THIRTY FOUR of them.

It's racist AF. "Those people" (who just happen to be black) are clearly BARBARIANS!!!! "They" eat household pets!!!!!! I went through something similar back in middle school (we called it "junior high" back then). The small city I grew up in (Appleton WI) was very insular. You could honestly say that there was VERY little actual discrimination, mainly because there were no minorities to discriminate against. There were NO African Americans in my schools. Not elementary, middle (jr high) or even high school. The city had been a 'sundown city' back in the 60s. Not by law, but it was real. Then, in the mid to late 70s, there was an influx of Hmong refugees (Laotian & Vietnamese). My mom was involved in getting them set up and settled, because the church we went to sponsored several families. The pushback she got for helping them from a LOT of people, both neighbors and parishoners (one of my earliest lessons in 'no hate like Christian love') was pretty intense. And, of course, 'everyone' knew that the Vietnamese ate dogs. So, of course, 'everyone' knew that the refugees were going around, stealing dogs to eat. And adopting all the dogs from the Humane Society... To eat. Really. Same bullshit as now, just a different minority.

Harris may well be the first Presidential candidate I actually voted FOR since my first Presidential election, Reagan's second term in 84 (I was young, idealistic and not terribly experienced). There are aspects I don't agree with, but overall, she's smart, experienced and seems to actually be a mostly decent person. As I've said before, I'd vote for Howdy Doody, with Clarabelle the Clown as VP over Donnie von Schitzenpants.

Well, they won't actually be able to read the Bible, but then again, they don't now either.

I believe there is a D-license requirement for Gold Wings (and also for other 'accomplishment' awards) I'm not trying to debate if that is a good thing or not, just that it's part of the requirements. If Kim is doing these jumps as tandems because she doesn't feel safe at her age, yet still holds a D, I don't have an issue with it. I can see some folks 'splitting hairs' and saying that since she hasn't made a solo jump in a while, she doesn't have a current D, but I would argue that with her history and her place in the sport, she should get a pass on it.
-
He doesn't think Harris is the equivalent of Trumpty Dumpty. He thinks she's worse.

I started after rounds went out of fashion, and I was always taught that it was called a 'slider hang up'. Not a huge deal, but I'm a bit pedantic. So different people are jumping it. Different people are packing it. And it does the same thing with everyone? I'm going to agree with Peter and suggest that the canopy is old, obsolete, and probably deserves a nice peaceful retirement.
-
I always thought a 'streamer' was a round malfunction. Do you mean that the slider isn't coming down until he yanks the rears a bit? That's a bit different. Is the slider the right size? If so, I might be tempted to mess around with how it gets quartered when packing. I've seen canopies that were super sensitive to how the slider was stowed. I have a 170 Sabre2 that really likes to have the sides of the slider pulled well out. If that isn't done, hard(ish) openings will happen fairly often. I'm reading this as 'all the lines that are out of spec are too long', not 'all over the place'.

And proof that Obama is Kenyan, proof that illegals voted in 2016, proof that he donated his salary as President, the list goes on and on and on and on.
-
Ummm... We already knew that Darth Cheney is Liz's father.

Hi Jerry, I would have spelled it "Puckey" too. Growing up in the 70s, the TV show MASH was huge. When Harry Morgan showed up for the 4th season as commanding officer Colonel Potter, he was presented as a career officer, who had been an old horse cavalry soldier. He brought with him (roughly) a bazillion euphemisms for 'large animal excrement'. Both 'Horse Hockey' and "Horse Puckey" were among them.

Yet anything that interferes with HIS campaign is 'wrong'. They're idiots. Fucking morons.

What is the procedure in Botswana(?) for aircraft modifications? What does the aviation authority there require? I know that where I am (in the US), the procedure is well laid out. The Federal Aviation Administration needs to approve ANY modifications. Their approval is given on proof that the modification doesn't cause any problems. Actual approval can range anywhere from the FAA conducting a quick inspection to documented testing of thousands of hours of live testing. Many places accept FAA approval (STC) because they know and trust the FAA process. Without knowing exactly what the aviation authority (ministry?) where you are requires, any anwer you get here will be a guess.

Interesting. Every DZ that I've been to (which admittedly isn't all that many) that requires AADs has you press the button and makes sure that the light comes on.

Oh yeah. Trying to get all the MAGA morons shoved back under their rocks isn't going to happen. Part of me hopes they'll try another insurrection. Another thousand or so getting sent to jail & prison would be kinda funny. I'd only hope (and expect) that they won't be allowed to simply go home at the end of it. I'd think the security that would be in place would stop them.
