a real bummer, but another question
wolfriverjoe replied to guineapiggie101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Can you? (generic you) Sure. Done properly, a normal landing isn't a hard impact. A tippy-toe landing is one option, a properly done "slider" is another. Should You? (specifically you, Guineapiggie101) No. No. No. No. NO. Your landing skills are nowhere near where they would need to be to try and pull something like this off. I don't mean to flame you but this is a really bad idea. I was going to reply to your question about hanging out at the DZ when you weren't jumping, but you had already done so by the time I read through the thread. There's a ton of stuff to learn out there. There's even more you can do. Packing. General gear knowledge. Landing patterns, Weather. I don't know mcuh about Elsinore, check with those in charge before doing any of this. Drive the golf cart to pick up the jumpers. Help in manifest. Help with gear (you wouldn't be putting rigs on students, but how about handing out altimiters, jumpsuits and helmets?) Help students pick up their gear and get back to the hangar (see "driving the golf cart above). And how about videoing landings? (both expereinced jumpers and students). You watch the landing and video it. You get to watch the video while the instructor/coach/other jumpers critique the landing. Again, make sure you get approval for any of this stuff, but - #1 Most places can use a little extra help, as long as it's help that they want and you do what they tell you. #2 Demonstrating that you are willing to help out will show them that you really want this and are willing to put in some effort toward that. Ex pat of where? West Dulwich I once dated a girl from West Dulwich. (Sounds like the start of a Limerick) Who made a most wonderful sandwich. It's pronounced Sammich! That rhymes with the first two lines. Limmericks don't work that way, silly! "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Point #1 - "Boobies" as a poll option is limited to the Bonfire, isn't it? Jeez Andy, get it right. Point #2 - I thought Krikket was crippled when it was enclosed in the "Slo-Time" envelope, which was, of course, locked by the Wicket Gate. This. Except that I take an extra minute or two to clean out the electric. It seems to do a better job that way. I just take each of the little rotors (Norelco) out and give them a once over with the little brush that comes with the razor. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." A South African site, run through servers in Canada. Unless I have to swear loyalty to the Queen or use "maths" to figure out my checkboook or spell stuff like "colour" or "tyre" or call the hood of my car the "bonnet" or the trunk the "boot" or call my work truck a "lorry" (damned if I'll do that ), then let them postwhore all they want. It's kind of a nice change from the normal I know you are but what am I discourse that continually goes on in here. I don't understand a lot of Brit politics, so I haven't even opened most of them. I would think it's along the lines of a waiting period here in the US. If you're a looney, they want to make sure that you are a patient looney (patient as in willing to wait, not as in under the care of a doctor0 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." There are roundabouts on Hawaii that work well. Traffic lights, contrary to uninformed opinion, don't reduce accident rates at intersections. Roundabouts do, EVEN in the USA. I wouldn't mind them if the idiots would learn how to use them. You simply look ahead of where you are, time your approach to hit a gap in the traffic and scoot through... Unless the idiots ahead of you think the thing is a four-way stop and insist on stopping until the oncoming traffic is clear. Unless the oncoming traffic doesn't leave any gap to fit into. Unless the oncoming idiots think that they need to zoom through it at full speed. It's a lot harder and a lot easier in a big truck. I just fit into any gap that is "sorta" there. They will slow down. But I need to take up the entire thing (both lanes if it's a two lane, and often up onto the curb if it's a single lane) because of the way the trailer off-tracks. I have to be very careful of what's next to me. And Professor, my (admittedly not terribly well informed) understanding was that the accident rates for roundabouts was higher, it was the severity of the accidents that was significantly reduced. The idiots hit each other more often, but the accidents are at low speed and shallow angles so injuries are far less (both frequency and severity). So my friend offers me a 'business opportunity'...
wolfriverjoe replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in The Bonfire
Be careful about recording a conversation without permission. The laws vary from state to state. Some allow "one party" recording, which is where you can record the conversation without telling the others. Some, however, require both (or all) parties to the conversation be aware of the recording and consent to it. I'm not sure where you are, so look up your state here: http://www.rcfp.org/taping/index.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Clickified. $1800?!?!? Worth it? No. The Falcon is an F-111 main and is only good for a few hundred jumps. The Vector doesn't even have a BOC. It's a leg pouch. (one mod that will need to be done) I kinda doubt it has an AAD pocket in it. I'm really curious who is bidding it up that high. Maybe the seller has a couple accounts. I don't know anybody that would go more than a few hundred for it. If you want to see what gear is worth, take a look through the classifieds on here, or look at the major retailers (SQ1, Chutingstar, ect). Seriously, that's some real "gutter gear". You could do a lot better for a lot less. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Can I fly a velo (Wingsuit, camera, whatever) at 100 jumps? Why not? I have mad Skilz!! 'Twardo is old(er). Boobies are good! New jumpers are coming to the amazing realization of how fun this is. Guns (Conservatives, Abortion, Global Warming, ect., ect.,ect.) are GOOD!! NO They are BAD!! And they are STILL arguing over who DB Cooper was. That's about it. That statement shows that you bought into the appearance bullshit just like the cool kids you are talking about. No. I don't buy into the bullshit. I sort of figured that calling a smaller rig "sexy" would get across the point that I don't buy into that line of thinking. I should have been a little less sarcastic. Or maybe made it clear that I didn't agree with what the "cool kids" think. For the record, I jump a 190 with a 176 reserve. I'm in the process of getting a new rig that will have a 170 main and a 176 reserve. I personally like a lot of fabric over my head. Some are of the opinion that having a dramatic difference between the size of the main and the reserve can cause issues during a two-out situation. The Golden Knigts did some research on this that seems to indicate that it isn't true. But the main reason is appearance. The "cool kids" want the smallest sexiest rig possible. Many containers that hold smaller mans can't be set up to hold a larger reserve. Some can, but having a rig that holds a small main and a larger reserve doesn't look as good. Having a rig that holds a large main and a large reserve looks even worse. So the "cool kids" feel it is necessary to downsize as rapidly as they can, and have a reserve that is sized way too small for their skills. I can't get it out of my head
wolfriverjoe replied to KevinP's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Head, heart, soul, body. When you put on a backpack and check your handles... When you look up and can make a reasonably accurate guess of the cloud heights... When your "falling dream" includes a rig on your back and your jump buddies... "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." To the best of my knowledge, no. DI is immunity. The host country can PNG them and kick them out, or refuse to allow them to enter, but once they are in and credentialed, they have it. Anybody else remember the Russian (Or maybe Soviet but I think it was after that) diplomat who killed the girl while driving drunk? He had DI and was quite possibly going to simply go home until the home country waived it because of all the publicity. There have been others, some involving drug smuggling IIRC, but I don't remember the specifics of any at the moment. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Going beyond "Because people are different, that's why"
wolfriverjoe replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in Speakers Corner
Different people have different viewpoints. The "neverending debates" allow the rational and openminded ones to hear why the others hold those viewpoints. I may or may not agree. I am, however, willing to listen and learn. It may or may not change my stance on an issue. But it certainly makes me reexamine my own beliefs when I have to compare and contrast them to another's beliefs. If I am unable to defend my own beliefs on an issue, then are they really valid? BATFE: I'm from the govt; I'm here to help
wolfriverjoe replied to Kennedy's topic in Speakers Corner
How well are they following the court finding? (serious question) I have heard that in a couple of gun issues, the ATFE was told by the court that they didn't have the authority, or were misinterperting the laws or somthing similar (I don't remember details) and the ATFE basically ignored the courts and did what they wanted to do.
