To expand a little on what riggerpaul said - The easiest way to inspect a canopy is to hang it up by the tail. If there is any junk inside the cells, it will usually fall out with a good shake. If you have somewhere that you can stretch the entire canopy out, that is great, but you can do it one cell at a time if space is limited. Don't laugh too hard, but if you have a bathtub/shower, hanging the canopy from the shower curtain rod works surprisingly well. Bathrooms are usually well lit. If you stand in the bathtub, the light will be behind the canopy and holes will be easier to spot. Alternatively, having your fiancee hold a strong light while you get inside each cell is an option. Don't take the light inside with you, or let her hold it too close to the fabric. The heat can do damage very quickly if you aren't very careful. It's not terribly surprising. Supposedly, the very first gun control laws here in what is now the US were in Maryland, and specifically denied Catholics the right to keep arms. If you want to suppress and oppress a group, denying them the right to means of self defense is the most logical first step. Very scary attitude from a jump pilot.
wolfriverjoe replied to seaweedknees's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i know he was talking about caravans flying at 18K however later in the discussion it moves onto 206s Ok, I missed that. (It may not have been up when I read it). You are right. I don't think you can get a 206 or 182 that high. I know our 182 has been up to 12 a few times (MSL) on "good" days. Only 3 jumpers, cooler days and a pilot who was willing to take a longer flight (his words "Let's see how high we can get") I don't think 16 in a normally aspirated engine is realistic, not with jumpers on board. Read the link again. He talks about taking a Caravan up to 18,000. Others posting misinterperet it to be a 206. There's a bit of discussion about shock cooling the engine, and how you can't shock cool a turbine. However, I can't see routinely going up to 18k. The guy seems to be a "cowboy", more than just a little reckless and overconfident. As Billvon says, not too uncommon at the smaller DZs. And HERE is a thread that talks about the "Ignition Key" trick. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." If they are dark enough to hide your glasses, then they will be too dark to see much inside the plane. Things like checking your handles (which should be by touch, but you want to look at them too), or giving another jumper a last minute pin check. They are so big, everyone will know you are wearing glasses anyway. If you care how you look in the air, then you are focusing on the wrong things. Have you considered prescription goggles? I don't have them (I wear the clear Kroops you linked) but they are an option. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." And maybe "your people" (who are also my people) should think twice before overthrowing a democratically elected government and imposing a brutal dictator who murdered thousands of civilians during a reign of terror that lasted more than two decades, supported the whole time by US (double meaning intended). For the sake of oil, we destroyed the first democracy in that part of the world, and so much of the trouble that has followed is just reaping what we sowed in 1953. Don Hmmm When did we start, or ever get any oil out of this? Answer? Never has not happened Next Really? We didn't get any oil from Iran between the 50's and 1979? Who needs the fuckwit burning the book? The Imams could have made up a story that it happened, and the results would have been exactly the same. Could have? Try "Already Have". There was a huge riot with somewhere around 100 dead a few years back after a story started about the US military interregators at Gitmo tearing up copies of the Koran. The protestors were really mad that someone would do that. Of course when the truth turned out to be Gitmo prisoners tearing up the Koran in order to plug up the toilets in their cells to cause damage/disruption there wasn't any protests, riots or deaths. Go figure. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

VAAST does nice stuff. I haven't seen those particular videos, but the VAAST I have watched are well done. You might PM DSE for more info, but keep in mind he's going to be a little biased in favor of them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Further up you wrote; He absolutely knew (or should have known) that there would more than likely be a violent reaction to his actions. Isn't that kind of the definition of incitement? I don't think so. He wasn't there at the riot. He didn't speak directly to the crowd at the riot. He didn't directly urge the crowd to riot. http://www.lectlaw.com/def/i022.htm This is the best I could do with a quick search. He burned a Koran. He didn't say "You guys should hurt and kill people." A rough equivalent would be calling someone's mother a whore. It would be very likely to provoke a punch in the face. The pucher would have committed an assault. The "caller" wouldn't have. The "caller" would be an asshat who probably deserved a punch in the face. But having to deal with an asshat who deserved a punch in the face isn't a valid defense against an assault charge. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Or how bout we point the finger at the cave-dwelling jackholes that think violence is an acceptable answer to somebody having a dissenting opinion of your religious views? What's the old saw about pointing fingers? Something about a few being pointed backward at one's self? I'm not saying he's the ONLY responsible party, but he IS responsible for being a world class jackass. Lemme ask you this . . . when is the last time YOU did something that people 5,000 miles away got so upset about they killed people at random over? Never? My point exactly. Jones was doing this for the explicit purpose of pissing off people int he middle-east. He's a jackass that isn't helping anyone. First off, I agree that he is a jackass. He absolutely knew (or should have known) that there would more than likely be a violent reaction to his actions. But being a first class jackass isn't a crime. And he didn't commit the crime of "Incitement to Riot." He committed a hateful, insulting, despicable act of free speech. If someone burned the US flag in (for example) Venezuela, and a bunch of American Legionairres went and attacked the Venezuelan Embassy, who would have committed the crime? And if it started off as a peaceful protest, but some asshat in the crowd whipped them up into a frenzy and that ignited the violence, who would have committed the crime of "Incitement to Riot"? The flag burners in Venezuela? Or the asshat in the crowd? Sure, the extremist Muslims are known for their rather violent reactions to any percieved insult to Islam, but does that make insulting Islam "Incitement to Riot"? Please offer good vibes/prayers for Normiss' mom
wolfriverjoe replied to skymama's topic in The Bonfire
Thoughts, prayers, vibes, all that going out. Hold on to your friends. You don't have to worry about being strong if you've got good support. I have a lot of respect for your decision to abide by the DNR. It is an extrememly difficult thing to do sometimes. But if it is what she wanted, then it's what should be done. Although not all agree, many consider any off-airport, non-demo jump to be a "Bandit Jump", whether or not you folow the FAA regs on it. I've done a few and been a part of more. Our pilots will do them, but insist on following the rules. It's their ticket on the line if something goes wrong, and I don't blame them for not wanting to take that risk. I wouldn't. Read FAR 105.25 (a) (3). The ATC facility having juisdiction over the exit airspace must be notified from 1 hour to 24 hours before the jump. While the word "NOTAM" (Notice to Airmen) isn't specified, it's the easiest way, complies with the reg, and give a record of the notification in case of any questions. I have been told that a simple phone call to the ATC facility would also meet the requirements, but you can't be sure there will be a record of it. You also don't need "FAA clearance" (depending on the class of airspace you will be in). The reg says "Notification". You have to tell them you are jumping, they don't have to give an ok. FAA approval or clearance is necessary for "real" demos, but that is an entirely different animal. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Why not grow more than 2 zucchini's?... More than 2 zucchini's and your friends will start to hate you for trying to overwhelm them with fresh zucchini's Because one healthy zuccini plant will usually produce enough to feed a family of four. 2, if they are doing well, will produce enough for an entire neighborhood. Any more than that and they will choke out everything else in the garden, you will make every recipie for zuccini that you can find, and still have enough to annoy all your friends, relatives, friends relatives, relatives friends and on and on. Why is beating others over the head so attractive?

Yes Yes to this also. While technically correct, here is where you and I disagree. WHERE'S THE "V"??? At least you got the end correct. But where is the "V"???? How many pages can we devote to the missing "V"? Is that your position, that JohnMitchells lovely wife shouldn't drive a car? What kind of sexist attitude is that? C'mon Skymamma. It ain't that hard. Pick a spot that gets lots of sun. Till up the ground, maybe throw a few bags of good dirt on it. Either buy the bagged soil or get a couple 5-gallon buckets of good black dirt from a garden place. Figure out what you want to grow. Tomatoes and cucumbers are really easy. So is other stuff. Ask the guy at the garden place. Get a few of the 3"-4" plants. Around here they usually run a couple bucks for a 4-pack. DO NOT PLANT MORE THAN 2 ZUCCHINI PLANTS Plant them in the dirt so that they stand up. Maybe put a welded wire fence around it to keep the critters out. Water and weed it. If a guy like me can grow what I do (my best gardening skill is neglect) then you can do fine. There is no comparison between store bought and home-grown tomatoes. None whatsoever. Ohhhh... So we need all those immigrants here to pay taxes to support the society. And yes, even illegals who work for cash pay taxes. Sales taxes, property taxes (either directly on property they own or indirectly by paying rent that the landlord then uses part of toward taxes). Excise taxes (gas, alcohol, cigarettes, ect). Did your home DZ participate in USPA Safety Day?
wolfriverjoe replied to Coreefdiver's topic in Safety and Training
I don't believe USPA "Dictates" the day. They promote a particular day, and base a lot of the stuff on that day (like the deadline for the magazine article about it) but fully acknowledge that many northern DZs aren't open then and have to delay them. I'm not a big USPA booster by any means, but I don't see any "out of touch" issues with this. Other stuff, yes, but not this. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Correct me if I am wrong, but the service bulletins I have seen indicate the AAD 'should' be removed prior to the next jump. Nothing I have seen indicates it 'must' be or that it is mandatory that it is immediately removed. Isn't it technically legal to use the AAD until the next repack of the reserve where it would be illegal to pack it? The way I read and interpret it, jumping the rig with it installed is in violation of the manufacturers recommendations. You MIGHT be able to fight it, but I don't want MY ass on the FAA's block. Nor do most pilots. The pilot in command has ultimate responsibility for the airworthiniess of the gear being jumped out of "his" plane. And it's his ass (ticket really, but the same thing) on the line. Nit pick the difference between "should" and "must" all you want. If I'm the PIC, you will do it on the ground or you will remove the Argus from the rig. Period. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Here's a decent analysis. I got it off dz.com recently but with all the Argus threads, and URL's not perhaps searching fully, I can't find it again. Wasn't even showing up in web searchs. MJOSparky or someone posted a bunch of links to all sorts of Argus reports & bulletins. The Polish report into the Polish fatality also has some close up pics of the inside of the cutter. Thanks that is exactly what I was looking for. I don't fully understand the point of cutting the loop in two places rather than one but am happy that as with most things there are compromises and valid logic. It also explains why someone mentioned (in a thread some time ago) why having a rig with the cutter at the bottom wouldn't lock closed (don't remember the brand but it could have been a Racer). I'm not trying to be snarky, but it would have to be a single pin (pin located at the top) for a bottom mounted cutter to be unable to lock the reserve container. The pins are on the bottom of a Racer, the closing loop goes all the way through the reserve contiaer, from outside the top (where the pop-top is) to outside the bottom (where the pins are). During a reserve deployment, the closing loops need to slide through (and out of) the cutter for the pilot chute to launch. The Wings is a single pin (top located) that puts the CYPRES cutter at the bottom. The reserve can deploy properly without the reserve closing loop having to move freely through the cutter. There are still some places around. THIS one is about 4 miles from my house. Squeaky curds that are fabulous
-
Save me a couple bags of curds! No point in saving them. If they aren't really fresh (no more than 2 days old) they don't squeak. Which is half the fun. But don't worry, they'll make more. My sister gratefully pays the FedEx overnight costs, and the cheese companies know their job. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
