Maybe better training in actually shooting the gun and hitting a target, but: Does military training cover the use of deadly force in a civilian setting? Does it cover the legalities of where one may carry and where one may not? Does it cover the necessary conditions for the use of deadly force? Does it cover the steps that should be taken before, during and after a DGU? Does it cover how to deal with law enforcement after a DGU? And does it cover all the differences in the laws of each state? They vary quite a lot. What is legal in one state may or may not be in another. The actual use of the firearm is a small portion of the training. Most of it is procedural and legal. Do most military personnel qualify with a pistol? I know they do with a rifle, but shooting a pistol is a significantly different skill. And there's no time limit on the DD-214. I know an 80 year old Korea veteran, who hadn't touched a gun in years, that got a carry permit. No real clue as to what the law is. He has stated that he can shoot someone in his backyard, put a knife in their hand and he won't even be arrested. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Will the Federal Assault weapon ban include .22 rifles?
wolfriverjoe replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, under the 94 law, any magazine over 10 rounds was not permitted to be sold new to civilians. That included 22s. The bigger mags for the Ruger 10/22 went from $10 or so up to around $100. Remember, in most places, the only thing that was banned under the 94 law was new manufacture and sale of new to civilians. Posession, use or resale of already owned magazines (and rifles too) was unrestricted. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Burglars Hit Home of Gun Owner ID’d by Newspaper
wolfriverjoe replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
This, to me, presents some First Amendment issues. Like it or not, such a law would be a prior restraint of free speech. I don’t like those. Unless the law is to prevent the state or localities from releasing the names of those with gun permits. That I don’t have a problem with. That's how Wisconsin law for carry permits is written. Those with legitimate need (law enforcement, judicial system) can access the information for offical purposes only There are some fairly severe penalties for accessing it (just accessing, not necessarily sharing or publishing) for non-official reasons. There's not a whole lot you can do. Most help that she wants is just going to enable her. She can quit, with help, but she has to want to quit. I know a few reformed tweakers. It's a tough road, and a lot of people die before they decide they want to get clean, but it's possible. My advice is similar to others. Be very careful, she has already tried to suck you in. Follow the NA link that Catfish posted. Find an open meeting in your area, go and explain your situation to someone there. That is a group of people that has truly "Been there, done that." Tell her you want to help, but aren't willing to put yourself at risk. She will very likely accuse you of not caring, and abandoning her. And above all, try to help the daughter. That may mean calling social services, or even the cops. The woman may hate you for it. But the daughter doesn't really have a choice. The mom does (or at least did). I strongly agree with this statement, as there is nothing that you can do that is more serious and more irreversible than taking someone's life. It seems to me though that stand your ground laws negate this type of cautious thinking, as they remove the duty to de-escalate the situation. Also, Georgia (for one example) is a shall-issue state that does not require any training before issuing a carry permit. There is a background check, but no requirement that you demonstrate any knowledge of laws or proficiency. Smart people will get training anyway, of course. It's just not safe to assume a Georgian with a concealed weapon knows the law, or that they can hit the side of a barn. Don Well, in theory, the only thing that "Stand Your Ground" does is remove the requirement to retreat if at all possible. It wasn't supposed to remove the "reluctant participant" part. It wasn't supposed to allow someone to be an aggressor, in whole or in part, and allow a claim of self defense. But some judges seem to have taken it that way. And I know what you mean about Georgia's lack of requirement for training. For some reason, a valid Hunter Safety certificate or Honorable Discharge from the service (DD-214) is considered adequate training for a Wisconsin carry permit. The DNR just about had a conniption over that. There is very, very little in the Hunter Safety training that applies to carrying a pistol in public. Nothing at all about the legalities of it. You are right that a smart person will get proper training, but there are a lot of guys (mostly men) that show up at my local shooting range with a lot of misconceptions about the law. Fortunately, actual defensive shootings are really rare, because some of these guys are going to commit murder if given half a chance. I try to suggest that they get some real training, or at least read a little about the legalites, but some of them "know everything they need to." I had a friend accidentaly put my land line in a "group text" list. I was getting messages on my machine that were "text to voice" messages. It was a little weird, and it took me a few days to figure out what was going on. Sprint, IIRC. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, that's her version of the story. She admits tailgating (one car length back) and flashing her high beams. Everything else sounds like exactly what she would say no matter what the truth was. That isn't to say that it didn't happen the way she said it did. But it's pretty clear she had options to escape the situation and didn't. If she didn't know how self defense works, or how the laws are written and applied, then she shouldn't have been carrying a gun in the first place. A point that was very strongly made and repeated numerous times in the carry classes I have taken, and in pretty much every serious article I have read, is that anyone claiming self defense must take every possible step to defuse or avoid the situation. Or risk going to prison for a long time. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

She made the conscious decision to stop her car directly behind the redneck lady's car, and made the conscious decision to roll her window down and shoot. She had ample opportunities to avoid the confrontation. That is why she is in prison for murder. you can google this. seems like the woman was unarmed. but also they stopped because of a red light, didn't pull over. The prosecutor claimed the woman should have pulled over earlier on the side of the road to get away from the one in front. Sounds like she was railroaded. Not really railroaded. Despite what some that post here seem to believe, any acts of aggression will do serious damage to a claim of self defense. By "tailgating and flashing her high beams" (according to BillyVance) she was an active participant in the road rage. She could have backed off. She could have turned off or gone ahead instead of following the car down the ramp. She could have done any number of things to end the situation. Which makes the shooting a case of voluntary manslaughter, not self defense. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." They did some of it at SDC Summerfest in 11. They didn't do wingsuits this past year, but the UFO jumps on Saturday night were pretty good. 190 main/reserve in H/C sized for 220/220?
wolfriverjoe replied to rifleman's topic in Gear and Rigging
What kind of H/C? Some brands are better at taking a size down than others. For the most part, you can go a size down and be ok. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Let's see... How I almost blew myself up in midair. How I almost fell off the roof of a skyscraper. How Gayle Sayers saved me from an Illinois state trooper. (yes, that Gayle Sayers) Maybe the importance of staying focused while perfoming (leave the GoPro on the ground). Maybe the cameraderie of the sport - you know as well as anyone that sport/homebuilt pilots are as close-knit as we are. Maybe the story of how your parents were more popular than you at the DZ. Well, New York state won't take away and destroy your car, but they are in contact with the insurance companies, and if you drop your policy, the registration gets cancelled. You could still drive around with the plates, but if you get checked or pulled over (look up "bingo hunting" to see how easy it is for the cops to check) then you are really in trouble. The Nuke Bomb Argument and the 2nd Amendment
wolfriverjoe replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
You are right about "arms are arms." The Battle of Lexington and Concord was fought because the British were coming to confiscate the town militia's large arms (cannon). But I disagree that Class 3 arms are easier to get than a passport. Although legal in Wisconsin, my police chief and sheriff refuse to sign the form 4. So there is no way at all for me to get full auto unless I move. And Short Barrel or Silencers require me to go the "Trust route" which costs several hundred dollars to set up the trust. Lots of paperwork and a lawyer. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

I may be wrong, but I thought intentional spins had to be done in "Utility Category" configuration. Which has a significantly reduced max weight. I'm not arguing with any of your points, just pointing out that spin training at or near max gross may not be practical. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I really don't think it would make that much difference. #1 - Booth's Law. If everyone had one, a lot of people would drop their hard decks because they could "get away with a lower cutaway." #2 - I think that the fairly rare circumstance that a MARD is going to work where a RSL wouldn't would be balanced off by the times the MARD fails. They are more complex, and subject to failure and misrigging. Not even all the "experts" agree that they should be used in sport gear. Bill Booth and Eric Fradet have been going back and forth on this for years. I don't have one, don't want one. But others want and have them, that's their choice. FWIW, I do have an AAD and a RSL. FAR 91.211 Oxygen is required for crew if the place goes over 14k MSL. I could be wrong about SDC going to 14k AGL. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Don't forget about the AAD. A CYPRES has depreciation of about $100/year and maintenance costs of about $40/year. This is the same regardless of jumps (unless you do a lot more jumps than you say) Vigils have a different cost, I don't know that offhand. And you mentioned the "non-directly-financial" stuff. For me, owning my own rig is worth it. It's mine, I'm the only one who jumps it (mostly), I don't have to worry about which rental rig I get, I jump the same canopy each time. If your ever lucky enough to have one in your pocket and your purchased a Hamberger for $2.50 with Fries at $1.25 and a Large 32 OZ. drink for $2.50 how much change would you be getting back? Second part of my question...How many people would you need to help you carry the change back to your car(s). Serious answer - The lower is the "gun." It holds the fire control parts, it has the serial number, it is the part that needs to go through a FFL if you want to mail order. The rest is just parts. You can order every part except the lower with no restriction. And it doesn't matter what sort of upper you have (semi-auto, bolt action, single shot), because the semi stuff is original configuration, that's what it's considered. They tried to circumvent the ban in California this way. It didn't work. Standard AR lowers are still no-go. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Yup. Feinstein has wanted to propose new gun laws for a long, long time. She knew that they wouldn't have a realistic chance of passing before the latest high profile incidents. But now that the sheep are up in arms that the scary, evil, crazy man is coming for their kids with a "black rifle," she has traction.
