Nahh. Single digits below zero F are just "chilly." Warnings to Brass Monkeys aren't usually issued until the negative 20s. Warnings to Wiccans about insulated brassieres are issued in the teens below. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." One thing I always remember is that in the case of a Police Officer shooting incident, the officer is not interviewed about it for a specific time period (2 or 3 days?) and must be done so in the presence of a Police Union attorney. This isn't an option, it is mandatory. A good CCW course will cover what to say. To the attacker, to bystanders/witnesses and to the cops. If the course you (general you, not just aimed at Dave) took didn't cover this, spend a few bucks and talk to an attorney about it. And make sure you have his card in your wallet right next to your carry permit. In general, you say "he attacked me, there is the evidence, I will sign a complaint against him, I will make a statement at the appropriate time and under the appropriate circumstances. But this has been a nerve shattering experience, and I'm not willing to answer any further questions or make any further statements until I have a chance to consult with my attorney." And then SHUT UP and call your lawyer. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

No, the NASCAR thing was based on you being in the south. It was an easy target and I didn't want to make a huge list of "sinful" activities people participate in on the Sabbath. I know it's big down there, and football is more focused on college level (played on Saturday). Pro football is a pretty easy target too. They play with the "Skin of a Pig." Clearly prohibited. My point is that if you are going to focus on "sin", then it's pretty hypocritical to focus on who someone sleeps with, while ignoring the huge amounts of non-religious activity on the Sabbath. The "Bible thumpers" seem to ignore this. And making scientific judgments based on what is in the Bible is really foolish. Denying people basic human rights on it is too. Again, the scientific evidence that it isn't a choice is pretty overwhelming. And you didn't answer my question about why you get to force your religious beliefs on everyone else. Because, for some, it really is... Here's a recent, real world example for you. My mom is a 76 year old widow. She drives and has a car, but doesn't go far. She's not poor. Recently, her driver's license came up for renewal. The DMV gave her the option of getting a standard license, or the enhanced "Real ID" that meets all the new federal standards. She ended up not getting the "Real ID" because she didn't have proof of her name change. She had all the other proof she needed, but would have needed a certified copy of her marriage certificate to prove her name change. She was married to my dad in 1959 in Ohio. She would have had to get hold of the Clerk of Courts there, request a copy, jump through whatever hoops they threw at her and pay whatever fees would be required. I offered to do the research and see what would be involved, but she decided it wasn't worth the trouble and that she didn't think she would need the "Real ID." She does have her DL, and it's a valid ID for what she needs. But if and when the standards increase, she won't have it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Maybe, but fitting well enough to be safe, versus fitting better and being more comfortable, versus fitting perfectly is a pretty wide range. Student gear often fits "ok," but not perfectly. Safe, but not terribly comfortable. My first rig was/is a little big on me. The yoke is probably one size too big and the MLW are probably an inch or two too long. Even not fitting perfectly, it's still far, far more comfortable than the student gear I used (which fit a lot worse, but was still safe). My current rig was built for me, and the harness fits perfectly. It's nice to have a fit that is that good, but that doesn't mean that my first rig, or the student gear that I jumped before that wasn't safe, even though it wasn't a perfect fit. Bingo. Springfield makes good stuff. So does Glock. So does S&W, H&K Sig, CZ, Beretta and on and on. The pistol that is best for you is the one you like best, fits your hand best and that you can shoot the best. That is a very personal and individual choice. The best way to make that choice is to hold and shoot as many as you can. Personally, I'm a 1911 guy. With my training, experience and personal preferences, that is what suits me best. I'm not a big fan of the triggers on the striker fired "duty" type pistols (Glock, S&W M&P, SA XD, ect). I much prefer the short, light single action trigger on a good 1911. That comes with the "cost" of having a thumb safety that needs to be taken off before the pistol will fire, but I have trained with that enough that it's second nature. I've shot Glocks and XDs and a bunch of others, and they are very good pistols, but they aren't my first choice. One of the benefits of volunteering as a range officer is when a shooter asks "Do you want to try my pistol?" "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Fortunately, Florida is in the minority as far as that goes. The concept of SYG was supposed to be that a person wasn't required to retreat in a situation where they were lawfully present. I agree (to a certain extent) with that idea. Historically, there have been cases that were prosecuted as manslaughter where a homeowner didn't "retreat" out of a second story window or something similar. These kinds of cases were the inspiration for the "Castle Doctrine" laws. SYG is just an extension of those. It seems to have been perverted for some reason to the point that, as you noted, a person can pick a fight, start to lose that fight, and escalate to deadly force. And then claim self defense/SYG. And that's really messed up. As someone pointed out above, this seems to be far more a case of "contempt of (retired) cop." He was used to being obeyed. He took great offense at being ignored. I've known more than a few cops who were serious bullies. You were going to do what they said, no matter what. Or pay the price. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I don't agree with you on everything, but I sure do on this. A 40 is a fairly big gun. Even the little ones aren't all that small. And even the polymer ones aren't all that light (lighter than steel, but still a fair amount of weight). Even a 32 or 380 that you have on you is better than the biggest, most powerful pistol that you left behind because it was too much of a hassle to carry. "Stopping Power" for pistols is pretty much a joke. Nothing that you can shoot in one hand has much of it. The attacker is going to stop for neurological reasons (nerves or spinal cord or brain is damaged) physiological reasons (usually bleeding out, which takes time) or psychological reasons (getting shot takes the fight out of them). The first two are going to be a result of shot placement, regardless of caliber. The second depends on the attacker. In any case, running away should be high on your choices list. Well, first off, being gay isn't a CHOICE. There's a lot of uncertainty about it's causes, but it's pretty clear that it isn't a choice. As was asked, when did you say "I like guys, and I like girls. I'll choose girls." Second, you weren't born with guns, do you have rights to have them? You weren't born with a house, do you have a right to privacy in that (free from unreasonable searches?) I can list a lot of rights that are attached to choices. Third, where do you have the right to force YOUR religious CHOICE on everyone else? Your bible may call homosexuality a sin, but that's your belief. How can you feel that you can require everyone else to believe the same thing (remember those guys, the Pilgrims?). Last, why do you get to pick and choose which sins should be condemned and which should be ignored? Sure, homosexuality is listed as a sin in the bible, but so are a LOT of other things that are completely acceptable today. Why aren't you railing against those? The one that comes to the front of my mind is the one about "Keeping the Sabbath Holy." It isn't just mentioned in Leviticus or somewhere, it's one of those "Commandment" things that the big guy gave to Moses, on stone. I seem to recall reading about a servant being stoned (as in killed by rocks, not smoking something) for gathering firewood on the Sabbath. These days, it seems like everyone in the "Bible Belt" is either at the mall or watching fast cars on Sundays. Why isn't anyone calling for NASCAR to stop their sinful ways? Not intended to defend this incident...it looks like manslaughter to me, or even 2nd degree. The shooter is 71. The other guy was 31? So it's not realistic to say to the old codger: be a man, put up your fists. If he had really been attacked (the vagueness of his statement 'something unknown hit me' is not very compelling) by more than popcorn, then he is probably down to the options of retreat or fire. Maybe so, but it's really hard to claim self defense when you are the one who initiated the confrontation. Even when you are confronting someone who is being a jerk, self defense is usually not a defense for the person who starts the fight. If it's a result of the vaccinations, why did the autism rate not start going up when vaccinations were started? What changed in the vaccinations between when they started in the middle of the last century and the nineties when autism rates started increasing? And it seems like most people have forgotten how devastating these diseases were. Have you ever wondered why there are words for people who have lost parents (orphan) or spouses (widow & widower) but not for parents who have lost children? Its because until very recently (last 75-100 years) almost every parent lost at least one child to these diseases before adulthood. Besides, I think you can make a better case for organic food causing autism than vaccinations. http://io9.com/on-correlation-causation-and-the-real-cause-of-auti-1494972271 The correlation is much closer. Of course, the correlation between ice cream sales and homicide is very close. So is the decline in pirates and the increase in global warming. Defeat Global Warming! Become a Pirate!! This. Big time. When I got my Katana (save the jokes please), I did the research and called my insurance agent. Kat 600 rates were nearly half of the R6 or GSX-R 600 or the CBR 600. And about 1/3 the cost to insure a 900 or 1000. It's not the quickest thing in the world, but it does me fine. I don't need the power or speed of a liter bike, and the "racy" 600s need to be wound up very high to get all the performance out of them. Best Route Driving CO to DC at end of December?

Glad to hear it went well. I was chugging through some snow the other day and it triggered the memory of this thread. Glad the dog did well on the trip. My dog always loved to go in the car, but it was almost always local. We did one long (6 hours each way) one day round trip. He did fine on the trip, but was very reluctant to get in the car the next day. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Just When You Think You've Seen It All...
wolfriverjoe replied to LuckyMcSwervy's topic in The Bonfire
Actually, guys like that aren't too dangerous, usually. They have their odd little kink and that's what they are into. I wouldn't suggest getting into his car or anything like that, but I'd guess that any girl willing to "Cheese" him would not have any problems once the deed was done. It's the psychos like Bundy, Dahmer, Gacy and the like that are dangerous. Really dangerous. In part because they appear perfectly normal... Until they have you trapped. And then (and only then) do you realize what sort of monster you have been captured by. But at that point, it's usually too late. I've always loved the line from the Addams Family movie (first one?) where Wednesday is asked what she is dressed as for Halloween (no apparent costume). She replies "I'm dressed as a homicidal maniac, they look like everyone else." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Summary of 2013 US sport skydiving fatalities

We've got one. Not "in some ideal world," but here and now. It's the snap shackle on the RSL. If you have enough time to decide that you want a delay before your reserve opens, you have enough time to reach up and grab it. It's something that needs to be practiced, and I'll bet most jumpers don't practice it anywhere near enough (how often do we practice pulling the cutaway and reserve handles?). But it's a valid option. It is not wise to waste time screwing with the RSL shackle in the middle if a malfunction. Are there scenarios in which a jumper would have time to release the RSL safely? Of course there are. However the vast majority of main mals occur at the bottom of the jump when performing EP's quickly is critical. A jumper can think they are capable of all kinds of things while on the ground solving the sports' woes in their head, but adding a step to the EP's that requires fiddling with a little shackle (often while wearing a fullface helmet that restricts vision below the jumper's chin) is not a good idea. Possibly even more dangerous is the decision and execution time required in the added step. The jumper must first decide whether or not to release the RSL. Under the stress of a mal that can take several seconds and the jumper may need those seconds depending on altitude. In fact, that added time required to make the decision and then execute the process could put the jumper at an altitude where they NEED the RSL that they just disconnected. I'm sure some on here will reply with a million reasons why putting the extra step in EP's is ok or even superior to not adding it. Don't bother. If you want to do it, do it. Just understand that it could cost you. Another reason to keep the EP's simple and fast is the possibility of problems after EP's. The altitude wasted screwing with the RSL could leave a jumper over an unsafe area without sufficient time to fly out of trouble or avoid obstacles. The adage used by pilots is applicable here - "altitude above you is useless". Likewise, if there are problems with the reserve deployment altitude is your best friend. I agree with all of this. I certainly don't plan to mess with the RSL shackle for the vast majority of mals. In fact, the only one I can think of is a higher altitude canopy collision. I will repeat: If you have time to decide that you don't want your reserve out right away, you have time to pull the RSL shackle. I will add that there are very few situations where there would be enough time or altitude to both make that decision and make the effort to pull the shackle. I don't plan on incorporating that into my "normal" EPs. If the canopy isn't flyable, it's gone and my RSL will probably deploy the main before I pull the reserve handle (note that I plan on pulling the reserve handle no matter what, following standard practices). As has been pointed out, the number of situations where an RSL made a cutaway situation worse can probably be counted on one hand (over many years). And there were 4 deaths last year that quite possibly wouldn't have happened, had the jumpers been equipped with an RSL. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I don't get the "RSL or AAD" argument. They are 2 separate, independent systems. Nothing about having or not having one has any effect on having the other. You do realize that an AAD won't activate after a chop if your freefall speed is too low, right? If the AAD doesn't see enough speed, it will wait until you accelerate to a high enough speed before it fires. There have been a few (not a lot, but more than a couple) where the AAD didn't fire until it was way too late because of this. If the statistics say it's better in most cases, why do you seem to be fighting against it? Outside of CRW and camera, RSLs do far more good than bad. You are basically making the "I won't wear a seatbelt because I want to be thrown clear in an accident" argument. The chances of being successfully thrown clear of a car accident are miniscule. You are taking the very, very few cases where it was "bad" and ignoring the many, many cases where having it was essential and not having it turned out to be fatal (with no guarantee that it would have saved the people) I agree that it is your choice, but your reasons and arguments are pretty flawed. Seems to be "shall issue." The state has 90 days to find a reason to deny. The governor was complaining last summer about it, that it had been "written by the NRA." He tried to re-write it to "may issue" and throw in a bunch of idiotic restrictions like limiting how much ammunition could be carried, changing "posted prohibited" to requiring "posted permitted" (instead of business being allowed to prohibit guns, they would be required to post that they allowed them if they didn't want to prohibit). Fortunately, his rewrite attempt failed. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

I started one so that my mom could see the grandkids pics. Both my sisters live on the west coast, and this way she can see any pics they post. My DZ has a page that they use to announce what's up for the upcoming weekends. Easier than calling. It's a handy way to stalk the weirdos that I meet at boogies and only see once or twice a year (waves at Sunshine ) I don't put much up, and I use the "If everyone in my life (mom, sisters, boss, potential G/Fs, ect) could read this, would I put it there?" as a filter. I don't put anything about any trips until after I get back. Very much "that was a fun trip, glad to be home from it, here are some pics and stories." I'm pretty security conscious about the pics I post and that sort of thing. I have friends that share everything. Some of it is pretty cool. George Takei has a great page. There are some others. I don't follow those pages, I trust those friends that do to filter out the crap and only post the "good stuff." It works pretty well. NerdGirl shares a lot of very cool stuff, from the scientific and very highbrow to a picture of a cat dressed as Chewbacca. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
