Interesting essay on scientific illiteracy in Congress
wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
There's a "Read the Transcript" link right below the video. I agree that I'd rather read it than watch/listen to it. Short version: Evolution Science is "Lies of the devil himself." Pretty stupid. Not just illiterate, stupid. And the guy is a congresscritter on the House Science and Technology committee. Coming from a physician who uses the results of science on a regular basis (or at least did while actively practicing medicine) it's also very hypocritical. Which is also typical of the "Literal Truth" Bible crowd. They pick and choose what they want to believe. Stuff that matches their beliefs is "true." Stuff that doesn't isn't. Regardless of the proof behind it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
The dead girl was pretty. The accused girl is pretty. There's drug fueled sex. And a dead body. And the guy who can be pretty clearly linked to the dead body accuses the girl of being part of it. Which she denies. The writers of CSI or NCIS couldn't ask for a better recipe. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I took a quick look. I don't have enough knowledge or experience in the field to know if any of the cited studies, the people that conducted them, or the journals they were published in have any validity. Anyone can conduct a study and get it published in a "peer reviewed" journal these days. You can also get a "Master's Degree" over the internet. I don't doubt the utility and versatility of cannabis, but I tend to reject the "kept secret by corporate interests" conspiracy theories that often go along with the garbage that's on that site. There isn't any "secret synthetic oil" formula being kept by Exxon/Mobil. There isn't any "secret cure for cancer" (or diabetes or any other disease) being kept by the pharma industry. There aren't any "debt relief" secrets being kept by the credit card industry. Just people selling stuff that want you to believe it. Food stamp cuts hurt WallMarts bottom line
wolfriverjoe replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Not quite sure what your point is. WalMart aims a LOT of their marketing at lower income folks. They tout low prices, which are often the result of somewhat shady marketing practices (same sized packages containing less product for one example) to attract people with limited budgets. When those people lose some of their income, so does WalMart. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The link you quote has articles on Extraterrestrials and The "Illuminati" on it's home page. Free Energy too and GMO too. I tend to look at the quality of the source before I accept it's information at face value. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." You aren't alone. A lot of people went through this. Including me. You list a number of errors, but it sounds like you jumped, successfully deployed your canopy and landed without injury each time. My definition of a "successful" skydive is: 1 - Everyone lands safely 2 - Learn something 3 - Have fun. Everything else is icing on the cake. Did your instructors suggest that you take up a less intensive sport? (We call that the "Bowling Speech") Or did they offer suggestions on how to improve for next time? Keep in mind, they are right there with you, and if they thought you were a real danger, they wouldn't take you up. There is a wealth of suggestions already posted, Glide Angle's post has a lot of what you are looking for. Including Wendy's logbook. It all boils down to "How bad do you want it?" Are you willing to go back up and try again? Last, there was a graphic artist who tried a tandem... And another one... And thought "Can I really do this?" And documented her trials, tribulations and ultimate success in cartoon form. The Skydiving Duck Absolutely the best representation of the AFF progression I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, common sense just like common courtesy, isn't all that common. Last week, when Atlanta was getting clobbered, I was up in Canada. I delivered in Montreal first thing Monday morning, and had a second stop in Quebec (city). It was snowing. They ended up with about 6" or so (15cm). A-40 (similar to an interstate) was snow covered and slippery. Driveable, but requiring caution. Even up in Canada, the idiots abound. The pattern was depressingly typical. Traffic would slow, there would be a rear-end accident or two, then there would be a car in the ditch or a minor accident being attended to by cops and a tow truck. What would happen is that the traffic would slow for the first accident, and the idiots going too fast and following too close couldn't stop. Crunch. There were three or four of these on the east bound side that I went past. There were more on the other side, including one where the original accident was fairly serious, there was one lane open... And there were multiple accidents in the traffic tie up behind. Including a semi truck that had jack knifed into the center ditch with the trailer across all lanes, totally blocking the road. I was very happy it was on the other side. I kept it reasonably slow, stayed well back from the traffic in front of me, and got to my destination unscathed. Because there's neither rocks nor mud under the snow? Because the ability to drive in adverse conditions disappears the instant they get into a normal car? Because it's the same road they drive everyday, why should it be any different just because it's a different color? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Industrial disasters and spills are very common. Some were sudden and dramatic, like this one. One of the stranger ones was the Molasses Flood in Boston 1919. Sounds funny at first, but 21 people died. Others were the result of long term pollution. The Cuyahoga River catching fire in 1969 is a good example. The long term dumping of PCBs into the Fox River here in Wisconsin (runs about 1/4 mile from my house) is another. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I ordered both from Amazon, but for some reason the vegemite got canceled. Try World Market. It may have changed in the past 30+ years, but when Men At Work hit it big, a lot of people here in the US wanted Vegemite. It turned out that the shelf life was short enough that it was difficult to get it here, through the supply chain and onto the shelf before it expired. I've never had any great desire to try it myself. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Well, technically, the officers weren't retried for the assault and use of excessive force. They were tried under federal law for violation of RK's civil rights. A nifty little loophole in the double jeopardy rules. I don't agree with it, and I actually do side with the cops in the incident. If you look at the entire video, not just the couple of minutes shown all over the news, it is pretty clear that RK is resisting arrest and that the cops aren't just beating him for the fun of it, they are trying to subdue him. Interestingly, that incident caused a rather dramatic revision of the "Escalation of Force" procedures. These days, instead of continuing to use nightsticks on him to little or no effect, they would just shoot him. If the level of force being used isn't resulting in compliance, then they escalate. Most of them, yes. Enough of them aren't though, so being very careful is a good idea. The prices are high enough that running a scam can be very profitable. Others price "gutter gear" as high as decent used gear. Fortunately, the honest sellers (again, the majority are honest) understand the concerns of buyers and are usually willing to accommodate cautious buyers with inspections and escrow deals (those protect the seller too). Michael Schumacher in critical condition after skiing accident
wolfriverjoe replied to strife's topic in The Bonfire
Apparently, they are bringing him out of the induced coma. There have been reports that he is responding to questions, but nothing confirmed or official. But he is not in good shape, and chances for anything close to a full recovery sound pretty slim. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/jan/30/michael-schumacher-brought-out-induced-coma "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I didn't realize that 1984 was "relatively recent." The remake was absolutely horrific though. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Yes, that's how he presents it. But it's not low risk - it's practically guaranteed to trail inflation. And it offers nothing that isn't already available with the Roth. A large portion of the people this myRA targets are eligible for a tax credit (not deduction, but outright credit) up to $1000/person for contributing to an IRA. The money that would be spent on the myRA would do much more good for these people in the form of that credit or in better education on the existing options. Or in increasing the IRA limits. Well, that would be "low return," not "low risk." The idea that the T-Bonds would never be at risk of loss of principal is the "risk" part. I agree that the returns are likely to be low enough to be negative, due to the interest being less than inflation. But these aren't intended to be "real" investment vehicles. Like weekender said in post #13, it's an "intro" to long term saving. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." NPR had a piece on this during "Morning Edition" this morning. Long story short, it's intended to be an "Intro To Long Term Saving" vehicle. Low contributions, low max, low risk, low return. It's intended to get people in the habit of saving. After you do this for a while, then you can move to a traditional or Roth IRA and really save for retirement. http://www.npr.org/2014/01/30/268686324/obama-calls-for-the-creation-of-myra-accounts "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Harleys. I want to ride a bike, not a tractor Riding Jap bikes. Like fuckin' a fat chick...it'll get the job done, but ya sure don't want your friends to see ya doing it. I like mine. You won't see me on it, but that's because you could never catch me. Nat's looks pretty nice too. Or maybe it's just her on it. Besides, you pay more for parts than I did for my whole bike. And you will end up needing a lot more parts than me. The Buells were nice, but the factory bailed on them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Just out of curiosity, how would an implanted chip be any more secure than a card in your wallet? The data was stolen from the merchants. After the customers used it at the stores. I have a feeling you want the end of the world to come, so that you can watch the nonbelievers suffer. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." We really wouldn't gain anything. The big trains use the Diesel/Electric because nobody has been able to come up with a mechanical transmission that will work for something that big. The D/E is a simple, effective and efficient way. For the "smaller" big trucks, a dry clutch and 10 (or more) forward speeds work just fine. The clutch and geared tranny weigh less than a generator and motor setup would. And my big truck, while not quite that efficient does pretty good. I can carry 22 or 23 tons and get over 7.5 mpg, depending on wind and hills. So I'm taking a ton of freight 165 miles on one gallon of fuel. Not as good as a train, but not too bad. MPG "per ton" is similar to "per seat" fuel consumption for the airlines. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
