That is what I said, it is legal, not technically legal, legal. Why would the FAA care if someone w/ 200 +/- jumps did a demo jump after demonstrating competency, filing the NOTAM, used a legal airplane, and followed all the applicable FAR’s? There are big differences between what is legal and what the USPA says you can do. I recently saw a DZ where the instructor (S/L) had 18 total skydives and that day, fired his reserve in the aircraft (no door) for the second time in his short skydiving career. Why doesn’t the FAA do something? Because they are not breaking any FAR’s. (Well they are, but that’s another issue). Is doing your first demo jump into a stadium, on an unfamiliar canopy that you are not current under w/ 200ish jumps a wise course of action? I don’t think so. Are USPA’s BSR’s a good idea? I'm w/ ya, Gravity, AKA "The Helmet Nazi". I say something if someone is leaving a helmet off (un-secured, buckled to their chest/leg strap is OK by me), or anything else. You never know, everthing should be secured for take-off. Hook

I think you only NEED the "D" license to get a PRO rating (not absolutely necessary for demos), and for demo insurance through USPA. Legally you can do a Level 1 exhibition jump w/o a “D” license. It is a whole lot easier (and smarter) to have a “D” license and a PRO rating, but legally not required. BTW, I do have a “D” license and a PRO rating. Hook

I would recommend jumping the canopy you are going to use several times (the more the better) at your DZ, then make a couple jumps into the stadium before hand. Stadiums are deceivingly difficult. The wind does very strange things inside the “bowl” of the stadium. Just don’t under-estimate the difficulty. Contact USPA for insurance. It isn’t cheap. You will need a “D” license to get the insurance if I remember correctly. Hook

Don't worry about only having 1 instructor. On exit 1 instructor isn't helping, and you aren't going anywhere. In taking 700ish AFP students (1 JM) I was never rolled over, I didn't get rolled over until I started doing AFF (2 JM's). Hook

There is another way. You can go to your local FSDO and request to demonstrate competency for demonstration skydives. If you can show the inspector you are capable and if the inspector is satisfied that you are capable, they will issue you a letter stating as much. The PRO rating was designed to eliminate/prevent this process. Showing the FAA your PRO rating card eliminates the need to demonstrate competency to the inspector. I have heard of someone that was anti-USPA doing exactly this to be able to perform PRO rating level demonstration jumps. It is easier just to get the PRO rating. The competency letter may not be accepted in a different FAA region. Hook

Line overs are almost always the steering line. I packed one very easily for an intentional cutaway. I PRO packed a PD-170, layed the canopy down, and pulled a steering line around to the nose and pulled 3 nose cells through the steering line. The result was a "perfect" line-over. Hook

Allowing the steering lines to come around in front of the nose, so that on inflation, the nose goes though a steering line creating the line-over. Hook

I jumped the Crossfire II in sizes: 89, 108, and 149. Loved it. When I give up cross-bracing and slow down, that will be my canopy of choice. Openings, flight, riser pressure, everthing was very nice. Hook

I'll confrim that it is a packing error. Not hard to do. I packed an intentional line-over malfunction for the hook knife/line-over debate and it wasn't hard. If the canopy was packed correctly, it would be very difficult to cause a line-over w/ body position. Hook

On Strong Tandem systems, pulling both drogue release handles before exit is the correct emergency proceudre for bailing out on the main. Eclipse, Vector II and Sigmas are different. Hook

I think you are confusing “Baglock” with “Horseshoe”. For a horseshoe malfunction, make two attempts to throw/untangle the PC and if un-successful, cutaway and pull the reserve. Similarly sized canopies will fly better than dis-similarly sized canopies. That being said, many factors determine how the canopies will fly together in a two-out situation: sizes, material, shape, wing-loading, deployment order, control inputs, line lengths. Predicting how two different canopies will fly together is difficult. Hook

If the housing is pushed into the container, then the reserve ripcord will be pulled across the top of the top flap, increasing the friction, which will increase the pull force. The housing is tacked to the top of the reserve flap for a reason. Changing that for comsmetic reasons isn't a good idea. Hook

No it is not. The housing is there for a reason and shoving it back down into the container is not the way to go. It should be tacked at the top of the top reserve flap. A slight buldge at the top of the reserve container is normal for Javelins. Hook

Too many jumpers never learn how to PLF for a hard landing. By initially teaching them to PLF, they learn how to do it correctly and will be able to PLF if necessary later on to prevent injury. Also, when first learning, their landings may not be so great, so telling to to PLF on each landing mentally prepares them for the worst and if they happen to flare correctly and set it down softly, then they don't have to PLF. If they are trying to stand it up and land hard w/o PLFing, they may make it worse. Worry first about not being injured and 2nd about stand up landings. I agree that to demonstrate profeciency with a canopy, your landings should all be stand ups. Hook

Harness shift to make the links even. It doesn't take long at all to shift in the harness to stop the spin, then kick out of the line twists. If you don't have time to harness shift, you are pulling too low. I have used this technique to recover from spinning line twists under my VX-60 at 3.1:1, 8 or 9 times, no cutaways from spinning line twists in 480 jumps under that canopy. Hook

You don't have to remove the door from a Piper Cub to jump out of it. The door is split into two halves. One half folds up and one half folds down. You can fly around w/ the doors open. Hook

Once again, tube stows getting a bad wrap. "They cause line dump because they don't hold the lines well enough" and they cause bag locks because they hold the lines too well" Can't have it both ways. Sounds like you were simply sub-terminal and may want to have a rigger look over your PC. If it is a kill line, check to make sure the kill line is NOT taunt when you cock it. It should have a little play in it and the the load tapes from the bridle to the apex of the PC should be taunt, not the kill line. Hook

You don't need a small canopy or high wing loading. Kelli was flying a Crossfire 116 at about 1:1 and I could stay with her, that is until she saw me and spiraled to get away Cubs will fly very slowly, especially in a decent next to a canopy. Jumping a Cub definitely isn't about climb rate/time to altitude. Have fun and I would like to hear about it. Hook

I have done some tests of dis-simliar sized main/reserves in dual deployment situations. You can do a search to find the results. If I had ti guess, a Stiletto 120 and Tempo 150 would probably fly together OK. Not as nice as a Stiletto 120 and a Tempo 120, but probably OK. I would like to get my hands on some canopies and do some more test jumps. Hook

I have a couple of Cub jumps. We removed the stick from the front seat and I sat facing the tail. Be careful of your BOC (if you have one) on the stub where the stick goes. We climbed w/ the doors closed for a faster climb rate, like it matters in a Cub, and opened them for jump run. (The upper half folds up and the lower half folds down, they are designed to be opened in flight.) For exit I carefully climbed out till I was clear and hopped off. You can feel the accleration, almost like a balllon jump because you are only going 40-50 mph. We brought the throttle to idle, put it in a slow decent and turned on the carb heat. Lots of fun. If the pilot is good, you can fly in formation under canopy. Have fun. Hook
