I feel for you.....it seems a lot student problems with landing occour under old Mantas at least thats what I percieve on this forum. In addition to all the other suggestions I will offer this. You said you would land and then realize you could have stood it up, which leads me to this exercise. you need an open field perfereblay soft with some place that is a couple of feet higher then the rest (you could do this in a parking lot but cement is hard). Now jump of the higher part a few times if your comfortable jump higher. what this would do is get you used to seeing what is comfortable to stand up. Ideally you could then start jogging/running of the higher part of the field and if you land wrong then you PLF. Again the whole point of this is to teach your body what is an acceptable speed/descent to stand up so that your not. I don't know if this helps but it seems that the physical landing is the one thing that is kind of ignored in student training. Were taught how to crash but nothing is really said about landing correctly or maybe I missed something

Of course it's gonna be harder but check party mix dog boy (don't know his name but I love his suit)has no probs flying the ball in a stand or check Omar and his thingie in crosswind(to sick). I would also disagree that your arms are your control surface.....your body is the control surface! I was just wondering if Levin could sit/stand with a ball and how long it took him to be able to do it if he can

Canopy downsize progression
Snowflake replied to andrewstewart's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
In order (student Sabre 235 (9), Omega 200 (3)) Falcon 195 (17) @1.07 Raven 218 (7) @1.03 Triatholon 165 (8) @1.27 PD 150 (6) @1.4 Spetre 190 (2) @1.1 Spectre 170 (159)@ 1.23 Cobalt 150 (40+)@1.4 -
A couple more points make sure you have your legs apart.... you might be keeping them together when you come out of the stand. Also try to keep the 90's when you first start sitting 90 degrees between Torso and upper leg, 90 degrees between upper leg and lower leg.

I've landed my Spectre loaded a little over 1.2 a few times in 12-14 mile an hour winds and stood it up I've also stood up a Cobalt and a Sumarai loaded a little over 1.4 in 12-14 mile an hour winds I had to run out all the landings though

Don't lie I had your foot and then went high.....but explain how Jim ended up so far away from us when we left in a train and you floated the exit....must be a WTC thing saltine or ritz it's still the same

How low is too low to do flat turns in final?
Snowflake replied to NicoNYC's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I won't comment about what alttitude you should turn at. what I will suggest is doing turns up high in the "playground"(make sure you can make it back from the spot first) do flat turns,360's and 180s etc. Check your altittude before and after the turns this will give you a good idea of how far certain turns will drop you with out the ground there to hurt you -
I learned that my natural trndency to ball up a bit is killing any docking I'm trying to do in a sit. It slows me down a bit and I go a little high. I need to push with my legs to stay stable not ball up and I don't mean ball I mean contracting in my sit instead of extending my legs

I'm usually kind of modest but I'll make an exception this time

My first landing I flared high and knew it stopped my flare planed out and then finished the flare and stood it up no run out. I was not a 1 jump wonder so it seems to me that a first jump student can have the skills and training to stand up all their student jumps.
-
Ok I have to throw in my .02 here Why was this your first time PLFing? Why did you even attempt to stand-up your first landing? Does a first time jumper have the necessary skills to judge speed and angle? *** I think PLF landings on student jumps vary. at my DZ students are taught to land on their feet and most of them do. I have also been to Perris where I saw quite few student PLF/buttslide landings So I would have to say that landing on your feet the first time is not luck it's what your taught, and that will vary from DZ to DZ. In my 200+ jumps I've only done one PLF and that was on my first downwind landing. Also at my DZ all the student canopies are ZP (mostly spectres) which makes it much easier to land. other then that I think everyone else has covered the mistakes that were made and steps needed to correct them. Remeber this is about keeping you alive not making you look bad

Are you opening in a track? I just got my Cobalt too and the first 2 jumps I had both end cells closed and had to flare deep with toggles to clear them both times I deployed on my belly. The rest of the weekend I deployed in a track and the openings were much better. I only had ends cell closure maybe a 1/4 of the time and the openings were softer deploying from a track also

No actually might be a slight advantage because you can't sweep your arms back to correct for backsliding due to body position. I used to have shoulder problems and sitting is no problem and I can't sweep my arms back very far

Yea it would be cool if someone could organize some cool hybrid/FF dives for us low timers (sorry Zen didn't mean to put you in the same catagory as me :-p) otherwise I can do solos at home
-
I didn't realize he had written a book. I must get it I did one coach jump with him at WFFC and he gave me so much stuff I can work on solo, if the book is as good as his coaching and seminar then it must kick ass

Why yes mine will be here Thursday and it will be 10 weeks since the order was proceesed an 12 since I faxed the order in but it's almost here and thats all I truly care about

I haven't really messed with headdown yet(I'm confused enough as it is), but it's the same concept present as little as possible to the relative wind. As far as getting flat on my sit exit maybe later right now I find it easiest to ball up a little roll foreward and extend as time goes on and I start to get comfortable on the hill I'll probably do that to keep up with headdowner's

As Sam136 noted when the canopy bucks from front riser input it's because your brake lines are too short or your pulling to hard on the front risers causing the brake lines to pull the tail down. Ask someone who really knows about canopys and swooping at your DZ for further guidance
