  1. So are you saying that those that want to treat everybody equally are insincere in their efforts and beliefs? Equal rights under the law is not the same as equitable treatment in the real world. It is very rare for anyone to be treated "equally." I don't know how you do that, because we are not created equal. As a practical matter, this is merely a fact. Therefore, I think it is misguided, at best, to attempt equality as a practical matter (vs. legally). I don't think that the teacher's position was very respectful. And I don't see that his treatment of his student had anything to do with equality. So you think that the next time your co-worker accomplishes something out of the ordinary, the thing for you to do is chant him a chorus of "HIM! HIM! FUCK HIM!"? I don't think that's for you to judge. But in this example, it's still not appropriate for a teacher to speak to his student that way. The rest of what you wrote...well, it might be another discussion, but for me, this discussion does not extend quite that far. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 2. Jimmy doesn't explain himself too often. A question does not always end with a question mark. Regardless of how he put it, I can't find any justification for cutting slack to one group or person if you don't allow the same leeway to any other group or person, regardless of "attitude." I have this feeling, being somewhat oppositional-defiant myself, that it is this attitude towards attitude that exacerbates the discussion of the already-volatile events that arise from time to time. The trouble with making exceptions is that the non-exceptions resent it--rightfully so--and in most cases, offer up even more non-conforming behavior in response. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 3. Can you restate the issue for us? As I understand it, the issue is: "Why do some jumpers get more flak for ethical abuses than other jumpers?" I think the question is "how does one justify giving some jumpers more flack than others over ethical abuses." I guess I'm not very satisfied with the answers. Or maybe I'm just confused because the thread keeps veering. Also, those are two very different questions up above. Totally agreed. Unlike most people who make longs posts, Tom understands how to use whitespace, and the content is always worth the time it takes to read it--which isn't all that much. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 11. No, Mike, he isn't. His attitude isn't going to change what happens to them. It's all thought. There's no vote he can cast that's going to change their lives or limit their freedom to marry. But those same people have real power over his life. This has already been demonstrated. That's the difference. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 13. It would be a rare event for someone who disagrees with a concept not to vote against it if the issue arises in that context. People can think whatever they want, but when their thoughts are given an outlet, consequences arise. How would you like to be at the mercy of someone who disagrees with you when you know that they have the means to control how you live your life? In a case where someone has the ability to control my fate against my will, I think that might be my take on the situation. Calling it a "chip on the shoulder" minimizes the real-life consequences I've stated above. We're not just talking about thoughts, but the ability of people to convert their thoughts to action. And the result of that was a limitation on his freedom to do something you and I take for granted. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
