  1. Good grief! You people need to drink more milk! I've done all sorts of stupid stuff but only broke an arm once skydiving.. But I have strong bones :-)
  2. A few weeks ago we had a jumper who had a Vigil 2 set in student mode (he didn't realize you could change it! doh!) fire his under a 170 loaded at 1.1ish (Pilot or Sabre 2 I forget which). There were 4 of us on the plane, him me and a tandem, and he was under a good canopy above 3, but it was freezing so started spiraling down. I swear he was above a grand when his aad fired - I was at 2 grand feet just above him and watched it happen, yet still even holding in brakes videoing and watching landed 30 seconds before him. It was definitely a Vigil fire. Since then I handed him the manual and made him read it :-)
  3. I know that in Texas there were people in west Texas where it was a multiple hour drive to get an ID. Elderly people who haven't driven in years only had expired ones and getting someone to drive them to a DMV to spend half a day in line trying to get one is a burden. Also a lot of women showed up to vote and there was a discrepancy between a married name and their original name between the voter rolls (which are not updated regularly) and the name on their drivers license and they weren't allowed to vote.
  4. I agree with Chuck. We have had numerous beginners wear their booties once off AFF and they have never had any issues. They aren't that big a deal.
  5. For a simple stack Pilots are ok - though as other people have said - micro lines can be iffy when things go wrong. If you can only afford one canopy, you probably can trade online your Pilot for a Spectre or a Triathlon which can be used for both CRW or freefall...
  6. Probably one built for a 190 will work fine. Good thing is you can usually find cheap since it doesn't have to be "freely friendly!"
  7. I must have tougher bones! Back in my younger dumber days I accidentally landed mains without flaring twice.. One was my first night jump - it was dark! - and I found out where the ground was when I spit it out of my mouth. My knee swelled up a bit but I jumped again the next day. That was on a Monarch 135 loaded at 1.1 Second time was again almost 20 years ago when I dropped a toggle right before landing. Didn't have time to grab risers or anything - just a split second to put my feet and knees together. Flipped through the risers as I rolled through, and other than being sore, was fine. That was on a Lightning 113 loaded around 1.3 I definitely don't recommend it though!
  8. I saw it once on an Icon rig with a hybrid Triathlon bridle (dacron line instead of the standard bridle.) Not sure how it was routed prior to the jump.
  9. And most people are FAR FAR more likely to die under a good canopy than they are to need an AAD fire. Yet people still continuously make poor decisions on canopy flight, canopy choice, and attempted swoops yet many of the same people who want to mandate AADs freak at the thought of restricting canopy choices...
  10. I have known multiple people in recent years who have gotten leg strap throw outs because of shoulder injuries or in one case a male who was too "buff" to be able to reach a BOC. Obviously they were belly fliers but leg strap was fine.. And most CRWdogs and advanced swoopers don't want AADs on their rigs. The biggest thing I see is money. I see tons of rookies really struggling to come up with the money even for a really old-not fancy-rig. Adding an AAD to it is money they just don't have.. I know very few freefallers (as opposed to CRW folks and dedicated swoopers) who don't have them for a philosophical reason. Its generally a monetary reason...
  11. You do know that if you buy a mouse its a simple setting in general to add it? Or on a touchpad you can still make the equivalent with two fingers? I've been using right click on the Mac since the mid 90s :-) Its easy!
  12. So sad. He was so excited about meeting his grandchildren. RIP Brad...
  13. And jumpshack runs great rigger courses as we'll if you want to spend a week learning tons ( and being able to use factory sewing machines and such). I'd contact nancy and she will be able to help you out.
  14. Ditto - what is your body weight and how many jumps do you have? What were you jumping when you quit?
  15. I've got multiple suits for different students - fast medium slow and I wear weights when I need them with the fast guys. Most belly suits around my area are Bev's and they fit great and work great. Any manufacturers suit which fits correctly would work too. Just if you order new - if it doesn't fit right - send it back immediately for fixes - most will fix right away for free but not after you jump it a while.. I've never had a bootie come off in free fall on any brand of suit ever...
  16. Installed a brand new pilot chute on a rookies fresh-bought rig last weekend. One of the experienced jumpers noticed his pilot chute didn't collapse and was trailing. Looking at it in the packing room, the knot went straight through and there was an 8-10 inch gap between the hacky and the pc. We stitched it together to fix that!
  17. Definitely prefer low profile rings. Want to be able to get my hand in it and pull. Of my 22ish cutaways - I had a reserve pillow on one of them. It was very noticeably harder to locate and pull than the d-rings were. I replaced it with a d-ring before I repacked the reserve..
  18. That sucks. We have trained severald deaf skydivers at my dz in Texas and it wasn't a big deal at all
  19. I've only ever heard the term used to describe the 20 way you said. Never a 30 way...
  20. If you jump at a dropzone with only one airplane flying pulling high is rarely an issue as long as you get out last. It's a rare plane for us in the summer in Texas which doesn't have someone pulling at altitude.
  21. Beer drinking is a good reason! I only watch soccer during the world cup but I have ancestors who came over in the 1700's :-) I enjoy baseball too though! (though on TV I only watch the World Series - I'll watch it in person tho!)
  22. Though I remember wanting to dock on like a 9 way or something at Moss Point one year - someone took his slot and so he kept just sashaying back and forth between me and my slot - I wanted to scream my ass off at him to get out of my way but knew it would do me no good! Someone in the formation finally got his attention and waved for him to go away!
  23. It was actually an issue on the CRW world record jumps too. The guys pulling highest (with bailout oxygen) at 18k if I remember right had to get solid sliders on their canopies to assist with the openings..
  24. Out of curiosity - did those rigs have hip rings? I have some rigs with hip rings and some without and there is a very noticeable difference in how far the leg straps can move..
  25. So what are folks doing with the newer cameras? Just opening it and blindly feeling for the button? Seems like that would make it easy to miss a skydive.. Is there some other method with the same functionality of the Hypeye?
