My eyes were so bad that before Lasik I couldn't read the "big E" on the eye chart. Couldn't read an alarm clock at night without bringing it to 3 inches from my face. I lost a contact a few times back then and it made landing rather interesting.. 15 years later I wear mild distance vision goggles when skydiving and prescription sunglasses when driving. But my vision is still good enough that I could do either without the glasses. Before - no way..

I had Lasik done back in 2001. I went to a new doctor a month or so ago and mentioned that I had had Lasik. He was surprised and could only just barely tell when he went looking for it that anything had ever been done because it had healed so well. So it can heal completely.

We use iMovie for all of our tandem videos here. Works awesome - is easy to use to make great intros and such - and for tandem videos its 2-3 minutes of human interaction and from there on out its just how much memory and CPU have to finish it up. I love it..

Your jumps don't sound bad at all.. Typical student stuff.. I have just under 10k jumps now - I posted my student logbook online a few years back because it gives people hope. Don't just read the static-line jumps - I become really impressively bad when I move to 10 second delays! The program I did at the time if I had done it all perfectly I could have graduated in 14 jumps. It took me 48! But I figured it out eventually. As I tell my students - as long as I can rely on them to pull and save themselves - everything else is gravy.. http://crwdog.servebeer.com/CRWdog/HowCRW.html -
Shoulder Pain From Hand Deploy
faulknerwn replied to kkeenan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Also where is your pc on your body? Being vertically challenged as well as jumping Racers which seem to be longer and skinnier than many rigs, my BOC is down more at my hip. I see a lot of the tiny rigs especially on taller guys where the BOC is farther up their back and would seem to be far more difficult to pull. And I don't think its a CRW pc problem - we can just leave it mostly hanging out because we aren't worried about a premature :-) And I have known other jumpers who seem to think that the location of the BOC is problematic for their shoulder. -
Cool! Thanks for the replies. I've also heard really good things about nod32..

Question - what is the best software (preferably free) out there to do a scan of Windows to look for viruses/malware/registry problems and such. I have used a few in the past, but some always seem to be adware or you get through a scan but it won't tell you anything unless you buy.... Also, what is the best free antivirus out there these days? Are they really a lot worse than paid ones? What is the best paid one? Thanks!

Conflicts of interest in skydiving instruction

We have been using this http://www.skydivemidwest.com/dropzone/spot-calculator/ to do our first spot of the day for a few years now and it works great and does the math for you! Its not uncommon to make some adjustments to it as needed but its pretty accurate most of the time. -
Canon EOS 700D / Rebel T5i folding Display
faulknerwn replied to FrancoR's topic in Photography and Video
My T4i display has never moved in free fall. Its quite snug. -
Got me on where I grew up (Richmond) and where I went to college (Winston-Salem) and then just randomly threw in Jackson Mississippi instead of Texas where I have spent 20 years.

Its all about relaxing! On the jump you did with me you were relaxed and probably laughing at me and how goofy I look in free fall :-) And just always remember - It took me another 30 jumps past where you are to even get off of student status! It will come!

I have been told that a lot of big-way events require wing-loadings between 1.2-1.6 or similar numbers. I.e. not too slow and not too fast.

Pranks on jumps - what is acceptable nowadays?
faulknerwn replied to pchapman's topic in Safety and Training
Heck at 2500 feet back then I still usually had a line of several guys waiting for their kiss pass! The funniest was one time I had a guy going in for the standard kiss pass and when I went to him he grabbed me and fruit looped me. I was laughing so hard that I could hardly get stable!!! -

History lessons for the young pups
faulknerwn replied to faulknerwn's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I have 2 jumps on non-square canopies :-) One was a Paracommander, and the other was a 23 foot round reserve. I was leaving your question up to those who are far more qualified to answer it! -

And I would love to read the CRW book! Let me know when it is done and I have lots of CRW community access I can post a link to. I can't wait to read that! (And yes I was asked this weekend by a young pup if I used to do CRW on rounds - I was in kindergarden when people did CRW on rounds.. These young punks nowadays :-)

History lessons for the young pups
faulknerwn replied to faulknerwn's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Ok. I was asked at the bonfire tonight if I did crw on rounds. I had to say that my parents wouldn't let me until I was out of elementary school :) That being said I discovered that these young pups had no clue who Clark gable, Mae West or Cary grant is So they need homework assignments and need to learn history clearly :) Where can I send them to learn skydiving history? Internet sites are best but I will make them buy books of necessary. But to not even have a clue why a line over on a round is called a Mae west is just wrong!!! So please post some educational resources for these children to learn where skydiving came from!!!! -
Here's the video - I forgot to ever post it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpyUpOs_BbA

I have only once - it was me! I was in a Porter in Switzerland and no one really spoke any English and my German sucks but I definitely was clearly put out first as a solo on every load I did there. Still have no clue why but that drop zone was in a valley in between mountains so it might have had something to do with the beginning and end of jump run... Otherwise its always belly big to small, freefly big to small, students, tandems, wing suit, CRW (Well if its big CRW they sometimes go first and get out short..)
