Lightning. And assuming your skills can handle it - one with a 1.3-1.375 (exit weight) wing loading. Storms are good canopies but are only compatible with other storms. Lightnings are a much more versatile canopy.

No rears. Just a very basic beginner half-flare to level out to finish the landing. No swooping nothing but a standard landing

Trying to explain the concept of a planed-out flare/ 2 stage flare to a friend tonight and I think a video would be helpful, I'd like a video not of a swooping canopy, but of some average sabre 2 or something showing the persons hands and how it levels out and lands. Anyone got something like that out there?

I did one 3-4 years ago. It was fun. Only challenge was finding the one dz no one on the plane ad ever been to!!!

What worked for me when I was a bad student - the big x :). I could never get a standard arch right so at one point I was taught to just spread out as big as possible. Worked awesome for me. Only had to use it with one of my students but it worked for him too.

AFF student struggling with stability
faulknerwn replied to tomahawkpilot's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It took me 48 jumps to get off student status. Learning to relax in Freefall was challenging :). For a laugh you can read my student logbook here: http://crwdog.servebeer.com/CRWdog/HowCRW.html 7700 jumps later I'm starting to get the knack of it. Just keep trying and listen to your instructors. -
Travel Insurance for a Brit jumpin in the US
faulknerwn replied to sparkham1871's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Did you ever find any? We have sow Brits here looking for insurance. -
Definitely not a problem. Just whenever you get a chance do crw between one and then!!
-
I said yes but it wasn't on my canopy. I've hook knifed a friends tangled bridle on a crw jump saving him a cutaway.

Jim McGraw and Steven I believe are still doing crw up at Dallas. Walt tends to jump both at temple and san Marcos. Walt tends to have a lot more time to work with rookies than I do because we've been swamped recently with work I am running a diamond camp at the end of October. It would be good if you could get in some actual crw jumps sometime between now and then though because it's not a 1 on 1 camp but slightly more advanced. ( nothing crazy just not an absolute beginner camp). I can put you in touch with Jim up in Dallas and walt if you'd like as well

Just out of curiosity - I am 40 years old, and only for a period of 6 months in my entire life have I lived in a house with an analog clock. From the time I was a little kid, all our clocks were digital I mainly use a digital altimeter. Every once in a while I'm without one cuz mine is broken or lost or whatever and I grab a student altimeter. When in Freefall I have to stare at the analog for a couple of seconds to process it while the digital is just glance. This is verifiable on video - when reading analog my brain has to think and digital it doesn't I know many people claim studies that show the opposite but I've got a little under 8000 jumps and it's a very noticeable difference to me in how fast I can read it. I just an curious if it's an age thing - if people grew up with old fashioned clocks it's probably easier for them.

You kicked ass :). And skydiving only gets better!!! -
Even if the DZ doesn't have radios, if you bought a pair, would your instructor take one and help you with them?? Radios are fairly cheap and if you supplied your own ....

A Few Canopy Control Questions
faulknerwn replied to hokierower's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
As to no 6, it is what canopy formation folks called warping. It works well for making you sink without driving forward. I have used it for accuracy, though I would not advise it at this point in your skydiving career. It can be tricky to keep the canopy flying straight until you get used to it. And you have to be careful coming out of it so you don't end up turning. It'd be fine for you to play with at altitude though. -
31/33 - they weren't that tough!

Could it be a student radio?
-
Yahoo! CRW rocks :-)
-
Square One has some cases for them that seem to be better than the defaults..
-
Other than stacks or downplanes, not much more can be done with those canopies.. I'm surprised you can't come up with any Triathlons or Spectres. Those work for both freefall and CRW..

NO WIND JUMPS- keeps hurting me
faulknerwn replied to ravel's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Actually upsizing may not be that expensive - most dropzones have tons of people looking to downsize - you just need to find some of those people and look into trading your gear for their gear.. You are definitely on way too small of a canopy - but there is a good chance there is someone near you who wants to and is qualified to jump your canopy, and you theirs.. -
They are extremely difficult to find because that size is so popular. Sometimes one will pop up on the crwdogs google email list or even rarer in the classified here. Do any of your locals know anyone who doesn't jump much anymore who might have one for sale?

faulknerwn replied to guineapiggie101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Go to Japan - when I jumped over there it took me a bit to realize how much taller I was than everyone!
