  1. Probably Sequestration at work. I know my FAA inspectors were expecting two furlough days a month starting right away. With an online alternative wouldn't surprise me if travel non-essential travel was cancelled. Also I had to do the online because all of the certificates from 2 years ago expired either on Feb 13th or Feb 28th depending on what your inspector said. (Training says end of the month issued, my PMI said two years to the day.) I had a test to give after that. For sure everyone using the last symposium's certificate was out of business March 1. And online was certainly less painful than setting there all day. I expect the room will still be available for anyone wanting to get together. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  2. Not sure this one still in business. Haven't tried to call but the email bounces and I haven't been able to find their website for over a year. 3. Is that a new Phantom Aerostar or an old Phantom? If an old one I might not even want to pack it. I certainly wouldn't recommend someone buy it. I think this may be a new one. But it is a 24 with a max recommended pilot weight of 177lbs. In US that limits market. The service life may not be a legal requirement (I'll believe it when it's litigated) but I don't want to be the rigger in court saying why I didn't follow the manual. But that's another discussion. Excellent condition.. probably worth more than the $660 on the pilot market on ebay. At least one dz.com user would ask a lot more. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  4. These two numbers are functionally the same assuming they were measured by the same person. The PIA numbers have all been produced by Sandy Reid using the same conditions and equipment. While they may vary from other published numbers they are as comparable as any. Any individual canopy may vary from another identical model/size/make specimen by 10% even when measured by the same person. While not completely on point the PIA spec for type 7 webbing thickness is 0.08 to 0.12". This is an example of how fabrics, with equal performance, may have vastly different volumes. I don't have the zp spec handy. I believe the comment about a lower bulk seam is correct although it's been a while since I saw a Pilot. PD's measurement actually results in lower area numbers than the 'normal' measurement used by much of the industry. Without looking I'm not sure what method Aerodyne uses but I believe it's the 'normal' method. In any rate round these number to the nearest quarter of a hundred (xx0,x25,x50,x75) and recognize that any two adjacent values may in fact overlap. And that depending on any published volume numbers to decide if a canopy will fit in a container when it's at the very top of the recommended volume or model size is inappropriate. At the limit only trying the canopy in the container will guarantee it will fit. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  5. I ended up with Pfaff 238 newer model of 138. Run great as you saw. I had to readjust the presser foot for higher lift after I got it but was easy. Have a consew 199-2 308 machine. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  6. Advertising not allowed in forums. More info to come in classifieds. Of course training (and cost) will vary from the skydiver senior rigger that's never seen a round to a seat rigger that does pilot rigs all the time. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  7. Okay, authorization to test will be available about March 12. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  8. There is always USPS or UPS to get it to your favorite rigger. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  9. Bill, First I can't remove it. I'm not a moderator and the time period for me to remove it has passed. Second, there is nothing invalid about my post. I made no representations about the photo. I simply provided a link to a photo for sale that indicated it was a parachuting accident. If in fact it was mislabeled by the newspaper at the time OR the seller mixed up front and back images that is not my fault. I did nothing and would do nothing to disrespect the victims memories and I am offended by that implication. I understand your discomfort and I suggest you contact the seller and inform them of the issue. Terry I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  10. Oooo, Ooooo, Oooooo!!!!!!! You've got me salivating. I've been looking for some of this stuff. Read your messages. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  11. They are routinely on ebay. But with some patience you can find some of these as public documents online. I used to have the link but lost my favorites. I"ll see if I can find it. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  12. You'll have to ask. In 2011 the room was pretty full. It isn't open to the public. I'll pm you the instructor's email. But there are better ways to spend a Sunday in daytona beach. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  13. Just a reminder. Most DPRE's took the recurrent training from the FAA during the last PIA symposium in Reno. If you did your 2 year required recurrent training with EXPIRE this week. The training now expires 2 years to the DAY from when it was taken. Since the training at the PIA symposium isn't until March 24th you will be unable to test until then. You can take the training online now. I'm having to do that since I have a test this week. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE

  15. I've got a swift plus somewhere but don't if I can find it. My guess is that it's the way it's supposed to be. I'll try to look tomorrow. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  16. Twardo, Isn't that ring loop loaded in PEEL mode? In the eighties I added loops to the inside of the main lift web of a rig for separable three ring rings but stitches are below loop. Made a one pin, throw out PC with pouch on the bottom chest/belly container. Added tie down rings to the container. Mine was/is a two point three ring release cutaway. Individual cutaway cables are sewn to each riser. Hold one three ring with finger of one hand while you pull the cable out. Pull the other one and the first one becomes a dead man release. Lets you streamer the canopy for awhile if you want. But with this when you cutaway you go back into freefall with your normal rig. Doing the two point three ring release really simplifies things. I don't think anyone mentioned Strong's cutaway rig. It's set up to mimic the tandem rig so handles are in weird locations but two sets of risers on one harness ring with two complete sets of cutaway housings and cables. Two main containers one lower on your butt than the 'normal' one. RI/Sandy make the ones for the Knights but I don't care for that system. The cutaway canopy is in a container stacked on top of the regular main container. This means unless you open the cutway canopy and release it you can't open the main you intend on landing. In case of a change in plans (AC emergency) I want to be able to open any canopy in any order. My old one is still around with canopies to go in it. I plan on assembling a new one with two sets of mini risers on one set of harness rings. Again with riser mounting cables for the chest/cutaway canopy. If you release tie downs you go back into freefall with your normal rig. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  17. Fill in a location in your profile or just tell us where you are in the country and we might be able to direct you to someone local to help. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  18. Check the ribs near the nose for a printed label. Some canopies were labeled in that area. IIRC it was near the center. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  19. Remember, you CAN get out at 3000' according to the USPA BSR's.\ I might have made a reference to 'young grasshopper' but you probably wouldn't get it. Check the aviation forecast for ceiling height. Overcast can be 500' or 15000'. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  20. Here's some history. I've never seen this image. I imagine it ran in a local paper. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1976-Press-Photo-Parachute-Accident-Lake-Erie-Huron-OH-/251054638242?pt=Art_Photo_Images&hash=item3a7405c4a2 I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  21. Are you sure you have the model right? There apparently was a Consew 266 but I can't find a parts diagram or a even a photo of the thing anywhere. Only very passing references for a couple of parts. If that's what it is it's an oddball. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  22. I've got room to set it. Not much room around it. But no way I can lift the damn head by myself. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  23. Once again only part of the story. 65.111 "(c) No person may maintain or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (1) Has an appropriate current certificate issued under this subpart; or (2) Is under the supervision of a current certificated parachute rigger;" emphasis mine. You can tie a bed sheet to it. But once you do it takes a master rigger to alter it. EVERYTHING that applies to a reserve applies to a main except the next person to jump it can pack it AND the rigger doesn't have to keep paper work. Yes, this makes it impossible to prove who did what to a main but it is still illegal to work on unless your a rigger. BTW the current SIM on the USPA website is OUT OF DATE. The FAA regs are the previous version, not the current version. And while main components are not covered under the TSO they are covered under the requirements to be rigger to maintain and alter and always have. MANY, MANY old and new riggers and manufacturers including many CEO's of gear companies used to get this wrong. Many of us were taught anybody could do anything to a main. That has never been true except technically from 2001 to 2009 or so when part 65.111 was written, in error by the FAA, that the next person jumping it could maintain or alter. This was a mistake in the writing in 2001 and not ever intended. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  24. Let the buyer define the use. But I doubt any base jumper would be interested. It still is a viable but not modern skydiving rig (depending on condition) for belly, demo or water jumping. But it all depends on condition. I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
  25. I had one mechanic tell me the distance of the hook to the needle needed to be changed but that one I'm not sure about. I did wear out at least two hooks on heavy duty home machines like Neechi and viking. Also remember the thread has to go around the bobbin. I believe there was an adjustment there to give it more room. The biggest thing though is at least an 18 needle. 19 or 20 if it will take it. And work with the tensions. The tensions, especially the bobbin, have been screwed up on every used machine I've bought. Surprised to see so many 31-15's in use. Maybe I won't sell mine that I got for $75. I'm old for my age.
