  1. Shelton, Washington has added my voice. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  2. Pin Check -- Gear check -- two sets of eyes are always better than one. And just a question, "Is your AAD on?" or "What color for you chute to be cocked?" add to safety, even if we know we did it. Doesn't hurt anything, and might just keep us from being hurt. To me, asking someone else is taking care of myself. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  3. If there were no nerves then it wouldn't be much fun any more. My friend skydiving to golf, suggesting that golf was not as exciting, i.e., nerve racking as skydiving. Yet, I get nervous when I approach the first tee, or stand over a 15 footer for birdie (like that happens very often). It is the nervous feeling that makes sports fun. The problem comes when we cross the line from nerves to fears. Fears can cause us to make mistakes and can hurt us. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  4. And I was just trying to help you fine tune the impression. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  5. I think you are painting with too broad brush. At my DZ I see lots of jumpers, new and experienced, packing their own chutes. I also see the veterans helping newer jumpers when they get that deer-in-the-headlights look. We do have packers, but they no way resemble your desciption. Perhaps you need to get out more. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  6. Welcome to the sport. I know the draw. They were flying right over my house yesterday while I was doing some yard work, just tormenting me. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  7. Last night I went the the auto races. I have been to the Indy time trials, but other than that just TV racing for me. As the sprint cars went screaming by, the announcer announced (that is what they do), "Isn't this exciting, and they are reaching 120 MPH on the back stretch." 120? That is as fast as I am falling! No wonder this RW is hard to learn. And I decided I would rather be in dangerous sport of skydiving and not the dangerous sport of auto racing. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  8. There are not many in the general population interested in trying this wonderful sport. You will find people to jump with once you get to the drop zone. Going skydiving can be a solo event. Being a skydiver is a team sport. Go jumping. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  9. My mom, no, she gave up when I was 40. My mother-in-law, still does. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  10. Ether, I hear you on this one. I struggled with this a lot. In fact, if it weren't for the DZO, I might have been stuck at that place. Once I got up the courage, I found most instructors more than willing to help out. Ask the DZO or manifest person who might be available. I guess my advice is, "Cowboy up, and ask." It isn't fatal. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  11. Like you, Fall Rate. Except just the opposite. I am 260+ out the door and fall like a rock. I have a couple of people I can jump with, and I am getting a bigger suit this week, but my RW has suffered because people can't keep up with me. I am doing what I can, but it ain't easy. Oh, and for those who want to suggest lose weight, I am, 70+ pounds and still going down. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  12. Welcome to the club. Some of us said it, but knew in our hearts we would come for more. I just didn't realize how many more and how often. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  13. Congrats on beating the addictions. As to the firsts, non-drinkers are allowed to buy sodas and those who wish "upgrade". I don't drink, but I did bring a case for my "A." Most everyone who knows me understand where I am at. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  14. Congratulations on the jump and weight loss. I did the same thing, rewarding myself after a 60 pound weight loss. I started at 310 as well. The weight limit was 250 where I learned. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  15. Hmmmm? I have had one in 60 and it was a minor twist at that. It was on a S/L jump. My instructor mentioned that line twists happen on S/L regularly (normal). POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  16. Infinity Owner's Manual, p. 9 "5. . . . Leave about 15 to 18 inch of lines unstowed." POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  17. Welcome. I would say the fear comes and goes as you try new things. The fun just keeps going and growing with every jump, every new person you meet, with every new drop zone visited. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  18. You could try this. Let people around you know that the door is uncomfortable (I wouldn't use 'fear') and that you need to be a little ways away. You might get a little ribbing, but it is a small price to pay for being comfortable before you jump. It is a rare situation when you MUST be the one who opens the door or sits by it when it is open. And truth be known, I don't like opening the door either. Not sure why, but it seems so {I don't know the word}. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  19. From the SIMs: A “skydive” is defined as the descent of a person to the surface from an aircraft in flight when he or she uses or intends to use a parachute during all or part of that descent. S/L fits that definition. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  20. It was suggested already here, but find ONE person to show you. I got too much advice from too many different people and got confused. Now that I am a little better, I listen to other people and add to or adjust what I do. I watched the video linked here and got some ideas. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  21. Welcome to Skydiving. It can be a calling for sure, and maybe your downfall as well (pun unintended but noted). Hey Skymama, I see you were at the Seattle Art Museum. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  22. They are jumping 4 miles from my house and I can see the canopies!!!! And I can't go! I hope it never goes away. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  23. Yes it does. And anything I might add would be pure conjecture. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  24. I took my Sabre 2 home and just packed it. I studied the lines and sorted the colors. Then I unpacked it, and packed it again. I wrestled and sweat, and after a while things began looking familiar and I could get it in the bag. Practice makes perfect. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  25. Amen to the wallet advice. I still have a rather nasty bruise from my wallet and a hard landing on a windy day. I have a couple of places on my suit I need to repair, the knees mostly, that would be skin repairing if I were wearing shorts. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
