Do I NEED an A license right off the bat?
brucet7 replied to Mazz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am not sure how it works where you are, but I didn't pay for a package to get my A. I paid for each jump as it came. Before the jump I would talk to an instructor or the DZO and learn what I should do that jump. We have a progression board, but the A license card is a great place to look at what you need. Sometimes I needed a coach for dock and dive or whatever. Sometimes I needed to hop and pop. Soon I had my 25 jumps and the card full. Have fun. POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
Does your Sabre2 open on or off heading more often?
brucet7 replied to Rooky's topic in Gear and Rigging
My Sabre 2 makes a right turn after snivel almost every time. Usually about 15-25 degrees. Occasionally it will go a little more. Once I did a quick 180 which I didn't enjoy too much. And the opennings are soft. POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
Skydiving with friends, scared as hell
brucet7 replied to juniorlawrence's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
OK, I cannot say my grandma jumps, but my grandchild tell everyone that their grandpa jumps, and show their friends my video on the web. Not sure why that helps, but there you go. POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
I was in the midst of a weight loss program and used it as an interim reward. I got down to the starting weight, and found a friend and jumped out of the plan. Haven't lost a lot since. But hopefully started lossing again. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

Many Christian sects have problems with the alcohol (and drug) use at the DZ. Most would object to the tit flashing and general level of sexuality. It's certainly not a place for the children. It's a place for adults who generally don't feel confined by the norms of society. That is a wholely different issue than the one presented by the OP. I consider myself fortunate that my DZ, while not the bastion of holiness, is a place where some of the things you mentioned are not the focus. During the jumping day, people are polite, quietly profane, and generally civil people. I visit on occasion another DZ and if I were to live near there, I might stop jumping because of the crudeness. I do not judge them, but prefer not to be present for all the junk that I hear there. I know that I am only going on days when I can pack outside so I don't have to be in the trailer to hear it. I found this post a little interesting, as a Christian skydiver. I found some sites, and the one posted here was mildly amusing. All I would say is that a few, very few, Christians think or wonder about the correctness of skydiving and put it in theological terms of sin. Others with no religious affiliation at all wonder the same thing in put it in psychological terms of mental illness. Careful not to broad brush all Christians based on a few who have alternate ideas of what is right and wrong. There are a lot of Christians who do love the sky. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

No one wants to jump with a newbie :(
brucet7 replied to katzg08's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know a little about what you are saying. Being a little on the shy side, i had trouble finding people, or more accurately asking successfully, to jump with. Fortunately for my my DZO watched out for me, partnered me up with people, and still does. It took me time to find a group of peope to jump with. Now I ask if there are any new people I can jump with, though I am not that good yet. It is a lesson I am trying to remember. POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
I watch with envy the guys who have their rigs on, and then just put the leg straps on as they walk to the plane. I am too old and too stiff to ever attempt such contortions. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

Saturday from a Grand Caravan on an absolutely perfect day in Washington. I could see from Mt St Helens to Mt Baker, the Olympics and the ocean in Aberdeen. WOW! POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
I did my A last year on a pay as you go, not as a package. As I had money I went. Each jump, depending on the number of instructors and phase, costs differently. I could not have done it if I had to plop down $2500 in one chunk. It worked for me, but I did some budget juggling, and once some friend begging. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

My guess is that there are a number of functioning alcoholics who are riggers and we wouldn't even know it. That said, I would prefer mine have better control than that. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

I personally learned to skydive from two of those "kids." I confess I know nothing about how they would or wouldn't change the USPA. But I respect and like those who taught me. As one who lives with boards, change is usually a good thing. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

I did my AFF through the winter and loved every jump. A couple were damp, and cold. Good gloves and a sweatshirt made it bearable. I would do it again, I was so excited. I am waiting for the planes to fly right now (maybe Saturday). I love to jump. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

I swallow, take a breath, and utter a big sigh of relief. For me from the moment I throw the hacky until the canopy is open is the worst part of this sport. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

Congratulaions on a successful night jump. I love my first jump, except for the ambulance ride once I made contact with the ground. Not going to do one for a while. But I am definately going to do one. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

Just one thought from a low number jumper who bought used gear this year. Different equipment and low jump numbers make for lots of PLF and other less than stellar landings. I have already roughed up my container a bit making some rolling landings. It is easier the deal with personally since it already had love marks on it. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

I got a Sabre 2 as my first canopy. It took a bit to learn to land the thing but I am getting better. I was visiting a DZ in another state and a couple of instructors there suggested a two stage flare. I went home and talked my instructors/rigger and they said give it a try. That has been a helpful approach. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

1st & 2nd static line jumps for 50 yo
brucet7 replied to Laweagle's topic in Introductions and Greets
Congrats on the jump. I wish I had made my first static line at 50. Then I would be in my 6th year and not my second. Welcome to skies and it is a great sport. And I have noticed that they let anyone jump. Even preachers like me. POPS #10623; SOS #1672 -
Do you think a canopy courses should be required?
brucet7 replied to JohnDeere's topic in Safety and Training
Required? I would like to have one close enough so I could go. Haven't seen one in my area, though I have only been jumping for a year. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
