  1. The logic comes in averages. A-3000, B-2500, C & D - 2000. Generally speaking higher jump numbers would open lower. Your D friend at 3000 not withstanding. We don't ask license or jumps, we ask pull altitude. And we sometimes adjust our pull to coordinate with those around us. I was a visitor at 2 different DZs this month. One asked me to open a little lower than I first said to help avoid the AFFI getting down to man the radio. The other asked me to open just a little higher so she could get below me and guide me down. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  2. It was great to see the coverage. I looked closely to see who I recognized. Made me sorry I didn't get there. Question: Did the POPS record happen? I heard there was a question. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  3. Way to go! Sorry I didn't drop by Sunday afternoon. I may have seen that dive from a nearby parking lot, but it would have been fun to be there. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  4. I would disagree with this. I was always the last chosen for every team in school. 40 years later I have a sport I love and am good at. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  5. I remember that day all too well. It is the first of many exciting days. The next big day is the day you pass your A license. Enjoy every day. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  6. That looks like a blast. Still impossible. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  7. Yeah, that is what I imagined. And at 56 yrs old and 240lb, I ain't getting my hands anywhere near those ankles. (Sorry about hijacking the thread). POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  8. How good am I? I am better than 10 jumps ago. I am not as good as I will be 10 jumps from now. I know some of what I need to work on and can't spell most of what I don't. I am concerned about improving myself. I learn, or try to learn, something every jump. I try to apply something I learned the last time to the present jump. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  9. Just for fun, try a flying squirrel exit. Have your legs at a 90 degree angle and grab your ankles while diving out of the plane and let yourself tumble for a few seconds, Yeah, you must be one of those young, skinny guys. I have trouble doing that on my couch. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  10. Yes, both, and more. Check out A License Check Jumps on Skydivingmovies.com and you will see what I mean. And I would recommend a coach. Where I jump has free coaching on Thursdays from rated coaches which really helped. POPS #10623; SOS #1672

  13. Welcome. Yes, you might not want to wait, though you would be eligible to join SOS by then, that is Skydivers Over Sixty. Have fun. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  14. I looked ahead to the A license check jump requirements and practiced doing those. Lots of people have rather iffy backloops come check jump time. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  15. What is good? Something that fits us well. Something we can afford. Something that is sized appropriately for our skill level. Something that lets us land safely and walk away. Something that helps us enjoy this wonderful experience of pretending we are birds, angels or rocks. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  16. I want to affirm that death affect people around us profoundly. Part of my job is dealing with death, funerals, counseling the people left behind, etc. I watched people at my DZ talking about someone who died in another part of the country a couple of weeks ago. "I knew that guy." was the start of several conversations. I was moved just reading the thread about how long before people lost someone. Death is never a solitary event. Dying when one doesn't need to is the harshest blow of all! POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  17. Don't worry you will be reminded again...... Amen! Friday my canopy decided to humble me. I had been bragging about how I was landing close and standing. Now I am limping with a bruised hip. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  18. Congrats on the new rig. I just got my new rig (new to me) together yesterday and jumped it all for the first time. Quite a feeling. Enjoy the sky. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  19. Don't worry about how long it takes. I took 8 months due to weather and work and cashflow, etc to get that A license. It is surely worth the effort, but there is no shame in slow as you go. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  20. I jumped because I thought it was actually a good thing. My knee was a bit sore from the trainer and I thought the pop was something going back into place, but as the afternoon wore on I knew it was not so. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  21. This thread touch a chord with me as well. just today I tore a muscle in my knee, getting ON the plane. It was actually an injury from an elliptical trainer that popped when I lifted my leg to climb the ladder. I went ahead and jumped then went to the dr. I am out for an unknown timeframe. I have three jumps to get my B, all other requirements are met and I was going to get them Saturday, before my birthday on Sunday. Add to that my new goggles were on the step when I came home from the Dr. and my new canopy comes on Tuesday. I am bummed. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  22. On the other side of the issue - I was honored the first time I was asked to sign someone's log book. I asked if I could. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  23. Welcome to this grand sport. Say "Hello" to fun, and "Goodbye" to your money. Worth every penny! POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  24. We all have them. My jump partner landed hard, landing in a ditch. He hurt his back and hasn't been able to jump for over 3 months now. Bummer. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
  25. I am heading to the DZ this afternoon and was planning the short and t-shirt thing. After reading all this, I have changed my mind. Sure glad I washed my suit this week. POPS #10623; SOS #1672
