  1. I'm not that silly hchunter614 pointed out my main worry... surely GaryRay didn't mean get out last then track back along jumprun to reach the DZ? I know our DZO wouldn't be doing any seperate run-ins in so we can measure how far we track, I know exactly what he would say to that Just wondering how he setup these "track back to DZ" jumps. As Butters mentioned also, winds would make it hard for solid calculations in terms of speed/distance.
  2. It's always good to buy a cheaper suit first up when learning the finer points of landing a canopy A student showed up 2 weeks back, $450 custom rel suit, soooooooooooo nice... nicest suit on the dropzone by far. First jump on the suit, ass slide in black mud and 5 inchs of water
  3. Can you elaborate on this more? Sounds interesting, I don't understand in the slightest though.
  4. I love my Sabre2 (170), I got it @ jump 28... snapped myself on jump 29, since then closing in on 100 standups in a row. Definitely give it a demo. Landings are awesome, flare is very strong and does great in no wind situations. Easily the best attribute of the canopy. Openings are very soft, albiet a bit random I just think its a kicks ass design, I load mine at 1.0, no problem keeping it very docile/safe when needed but is still offering a lot on canopy control days. Did I mention it's fun in no wind?
  5. In this situation, talk directly with your instructors. Don't think of it as a "reject" or "retest", have some confidence and get back in the plane , crank it out Taz.
  6. I suffered from this a lot, it's been corrected now though by cranking out hop n pops on canopy days. I still see it every load though on weekends, new jumpers sitting at 600ft on final and they're already starting to head over target. Plenty of time and space to do 45's/90's and still have heaps of altitude for safety. We're only a C182 DZ, if you're heading for a hangar or a bad situation, the CI won't bust your balls over a few S turns. They hold steady though till they're out of options, then it ends up nasty.
  7. Right on! Everyone had a joke at this guy with a 100% fluro pink, F1-11 loaded at ~0.8. Cranked out 400 jumps his first year, I reckon 390 of them standup. Got to do heli jumps, balloon jumps, demos his first year. Now he's got the snazzy rig, camera and flying wingsuits. I guess he had the last laugh Don't underestimate the power of staying safe
  8. I set mine at 4500ft - breakoff 3500ft - back to box/wave, dump 2000ft - GET SOMETHING OUT. The way I see it, I always look at my visual alti before the 4500 alarm. If I get "surprised" by the breakoff, I go back and review my altitude awareness. Same goes with the 3500ft alarm, I count it out and maintain awareness in my track, never wait for the alarm now. I got into the habit of max tracking at breakoff till I "heard" the alarm, this backfired when I confused the 2nd alarm for the 1st during a hectic rel-dive and as a result tracked down and dumped on the siren was swinging under canopy at 1500ft, that sure puckered me up. That's my experience, set them at the correct heights but be AHEAD of the alarms mentally. Just a question to the experienced jumpers, is your 2nd alarm set for coming out of the track or is it set for dumping?
  9. Good attitude adamx. Our dropzone drills PLF's during the FJC, unfortunately nobody is required to practice them under canopy which can be dangerous. Saw it happen on the weekend. AFF4, on radio. AFF 1 - 3 all perfect standups. Canopy was shaking a bit on final, he flared, it dropped him like a sack of spuds... what did he do? Picked his legs up/froze and smashed in vertically right on his tailbone/back. Very lucky the canopy was ~300sqf and landing was in 5 inch deep water, that being said, he came away busted.
  10. Our DZ only has 1 jumper with soft reserve handle. Pretty much due to the fact that our CI/DZO really doesn't like them and probably never will. He doesn't stop anyone from jumping them, but his opinion is well known and if you do decide to get one prepare for multiple weeks of intense grilling followed by being used as an "example" to newer jumps for a long time to come. A healthy attitude from the guy running the show has a strong impact.
  11. No problem doing that at a small/club DZ. We have a single Cessna 182 that only operates on weekends and I would say the majority of the jumpers do sub-50 a year and everyone remains VERY close friends.
  12. I will jump in 20 knot winds providing it's steady. Anything above 20, I stay on the ground. If it's close to 20, but gusty and turbulent, I stay on the ground.
  13. That's no surprise, I've had closed cells on 100% of my Sabre2 170 openings. It does open soft though for me, everytime regardless of packing. Mine take 700 - 800ft, like butter.
  14. Yeah I don't mind solos at all, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. A nice fast track with a good canopy ride is about as satisfying as it gets for me. Dropzones are pretty chill places, being introverted doesn't matter in the slighest, once you spend every weekend for 12 months out there you will have at least a few cool jumping buddies.
  15. It's not really a good loner hobby. It's a GREAT loner hobby. I'm very introverted, the DZ atmosphere is great, it's very easy to make friends with everyone because all have something in common.
  16. Have fun! I assume you have paddles or radio for your canopy flight, just keep a cool head and if you can manage it, SMILE
  17. Just remember when considering the 210 instead of the 190, the modern (mid performance) canopy designs fly different to what you're currently on. You will notice especially when you demo canopies like Sabre2/Safire2/Pilot that being slightly elliptical really kicks up your altitude loss a fair bit, great to spiral under.
  18. Definitely demo the Sabre2. Now that I've stopped rolling the nose while packing, I have ZERO complaints about the canopy. Soft openings, fun to fly and a piece of cake to land, the flare is VERY powerful. The Spectre was fun, but it was the flare in the end that sold me on the Sabre2.
  19. In the meantime, why not go with your wife and yourself to a wind tunnel and have a fly. Better then getting into a fight.
  20. Do you really think it's wise to do any sort of freefly from 10k without an audible. The CI/DZO seems pretty set about the idea. It is a nice luxury though, I love tracking hard on the 1st alarm then dumping on the 2nd, no effort.
  21. What suit was the 2nd guy flying? God that balloon would have been the best jump ever.
  22. I definitely do not think a audible is good for AFF/students, I got mine @ 50 jumps and nearly regret it. I wanted to build my altitude awareness for a 100 - 200 before I got one, but the CI insisted VERY strongly that I require one for backfly's/backtracks and my first attempts at sitflying. I set my optima at 4500,3500,2000 I always check my visual alti during the skydive and before breakoff.
  23. What, they died? Did I miss something here.
