Yes. Airplanes are the same way. When calculating an aircraft's wingloading, the weight of the wings is also considered since they have to support themselves as well and not just the fuselage. So generally just add your gear's weight. Keeping it simple. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

Exactly. Terminal Velocity, although involving gravity, is a function of air resistance only because gravity is a constant acceleration. It goes back to Newton's laws in that without drag, every object will fall the same speed. The water encounters no resistance as it falls, so it has an infinite terminal velocity. Of course thats sends it straight into the bottom of the cup which has a pretty low TV becauses of it's surface area exposed. But the pressure differences created at the top of the cup would surely send water flyin'. It is much stronger than the force keeping it in the cup. As for water balloons, I own one of those elastic launcher deals. Just like most kids, we terrorized the neighborhood for a couple years with it. After a few months a few guys always get ballsy and agree to get hit intentionally. I was one of them, and even though it does hurt pretty badly, I seriously doubt death could be possible for an average sized kid or adult. "Are you coming to the party? www.flyaerodyne.com/download/miniforce.pdf Seems pretty legit to me. Obviously a guy from UPT is going to say its crap, because the rig he is trying to sell you doesn't have it. What business doesn't work that way. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

Kansas 30 MPH Wind Stadium Demo 10/11/08

So it's all ok since no one or nothing was hurt this time? I don't think that's the point here. Hell, I bet some people could pull of a Mr. Bill with only one rig on and survive it. Does that mean everyone will every time? absolutely not. The point here is to set limits before someone does get killed. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" That's some of the best advice youll find. I found a rig that was made for the 190 canopy I wanted, but would hold the 210 I owned just a little tight. I started the same way...with great stand up landings on target all the time. But i've learned that canopy piloting can become a humbling experience to anyone at any time. I put 5 jumps on my new 188 last weekend, and then the 6th jump it collapsed 25 feet up on final. Luckily I walked away just fine, but not everyone does. Remember that no matter the canopy, it can take control at any time. Take the time to downsize gradually and become completely proficient with the one you have. I felt comfortable with landings on jump 24 too, but there's a huge difference between then and now, and I have leaps and bounds to go. I really believe I would have handled it much worse back then. It's not worth your skydiving career and/or life. Listen to the people who "have been there and done that." Somehow they seem to know everything and usually end up right! I love the situation of the double door. I get to the beginning door first and hold it open for the guy/gal behind me. Now Im right behind him approaching the second door and he barely opens it enough for him to squeeze thru and it closes behind him. Maybe I just expect the same gratitude back but I usually just laugh at how ironic it seems. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

The only one i've had is upon deployment I look up to find a 20-30 sq ft canopy above my head. It's a weird shape, very long horizontally and skinny. It's a white/transparent color with a nasty thunderstorm clouded sky behind it. All is fine until landing of course, when I come in at like 100 mph and leave a HUGE rut in the ground as I skid along it with my feet. Once I stop I am about 5 feet down and the cloud of dust is all over. Brush it off and walk away casually "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Haha you're eyes are open?!?! I'm scared to death to find a jumper who still has their eyes closed then!! Just do me a favor and go to the first instructor you find, tell them your canopy choice and WL, and if you haven't been knocked to the ground already, tell them you want to learn canopy transfers because "your eyes are open and you get out of line twists by pulling toggles!" According to the fatality database, in the last 5 years there has been 2 deaths from reserve line twists...A tandem. And it is also believed that the reserve had a horseshoe malfunction that caused them. Under a reserve, which isn't spiraling to the ground like your diablo or 1.6 is going to do someday, you generally have enough time to kick out of the few line twists that may have occured from, for example, spinning during deployment. Can you? Maybe if the circumstances are perfect, but I'm sure that's rarely the case. What if, while dicking around with your "proven" method you collide with another canopy? What if you take just a few seconds too long to decide with toggle is right, and suddenly you're in G-loc and can't even reach up to grab your handles, let alone your toggles? Do you have a magic trick to fix these too? "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

The bad part about "lucid dreams" is when something is about to go your way and you wake up right before. Then, after rambling some profanity in your head about how you 'almost had it/her/etc etc', you try to fall back asleep hoping it will continue where it left off. I don't think mine ever continue "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

You are on the ass end of your own comment here. Ignoring what every experienced jumper here has told you is very ignorant, as most certainly will not help you. In fact it's asking for the opposite. It sure sounds like your goal in skydiving is to save reserve repacks. Hmm. I guess you're right, the damn things aren't designed very well, are a pretty risky alternative, and should only be used at the very last second I can't agree with that. I have also read posts about "canopy transfer". It also can work in certain situations if done correctly, but it is an advanced maneuver and therefore I have no interest in learning it until I myself am advanced. And in that case I will go to one of Brian's courses and learn it firsthand, not from a 100 jump wonder. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Martin do you want to take me on a night tandem? And no not naked you sick son of a bitch!! "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52 -
Honestly, I don't think anyone taught you this procedure because it is fairly advanced, and for advanced scenarios. In FJC, which wasn't all that long ago for either of us, the topic on line twists is kicking out. At the preferred lower WL's for new jumpers, the canopy will still fly straight as a dart, leaving time to kick out. I think if you gradually stepped down as experience came, you would have gotten the advice from others who have used it successfully....in time. Also, to a beginner who is loaded highly for his experience level, spinning line twists can be a pretty frightening thing. How easy would it be for alot of newbs to apply toggle input to the wrong toggle in that scenario, especially as you gain momentum and speed up? Then if the shit hasn't already hit the fan, it's about to. Just seems like a risky and uneeded approach to teach to the vast majority of new jumpers who downsize gradually. Now I know who you are! Ben told me about your night jump since I obviously couldn't see after exit. Awesome!! "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52 -
Why is it so hard for you to listen to people who have "been there and done that"? We have basically the same experience and I have no problem listening to the experienced folk. Afterall, they have done it and I have not. Your attitude irritates me because I have read more than one incident report with newer jumpers like us with your careless attitude "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Brian Germain is also a HIGHLY skilled and experienced canopy pilot and skydiver. What do you think he'd tell you if he knew your experience level, WL, and canopy choice? "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

: 6 : : 100th jump! My mom (who hates planes and refuses to ever jump) chose to do an observer ride in the 182. The rest of us launched a 3-way horny gorilla and held it a suprisingly long time. I slipped out but somehow kept the same fall rate on my belly as the now 2-way horny gorilla and docked on it before breakoff : First night jump. Did a 2-way with Hobie, keeping grips the whole way after his altimeter decides to commit suicide right after taking off. Second one with Buff, 6 pts before breaking at 5k. Damn good Saturday! ....... Then the plane breaks sunday.. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52

I don't know about K-State, but WSU starts the 21st, so I will have 4 days of class before I miss the next 3! Am I a bad student? Hails no! I just have my priorities set where they should be "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52 -
I'm 20 and in college as well. I went through the IAD/static line course and it is definitely cheaper to stay current. In the long run it will cost about the same amount as AFF, but allows you to pace yourself more. Also plan on gear after getting your license. I got everything used for about $2,200 and it is all in great shape! After paying last semester's tuition, books, etc etc I was having alot of trouble affording jumps. I decided to go out to the DZ and just pack for a day or 2 to pay off a couple jumps, but now I consistently pack tandems/students rigs and still make 3-4 jumps a day. Its alot of work but in college there isn't alot of options! Oh, and I did my first tandem in HI too! "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Has anyone had a container tear like this before?
linebckr83 replied to linebckr83's topic in Gear and Rigging
That explanation is very much appreciated. It makes sense to use redundancy on systems like these, and probably explains why container failure is so incredibly uncommon. "Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #52
