AFF 4 : Very humbling experience.
blackout replied to Chubba's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I went through AFF what in a fashion that I thought was excellent cept for the barrel rolls. I was a bit of a flailer on exit but have since gotten better. Just stick with it, it only gets better. -
How far do you drive to the DZ each weekend??
blackout replied to partyboy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
80 miles each way takes about 2 hours -
Haha sounds like a keeper to me
-
then AFF would be the way to go but you could end up dumping alot of money into it especially if you fail an AFF jump.

I think its probably more expensive than a good coke habit if you are serious about skydiving. At least it wont land you in jail though

There is always plenty to do on solos, if you find it that boring, do a hop n pop and practice your canopy skills. While they may not be my favorite thing to do either, they are probably a good time to practice new skills. If nothing else just to enjoy the day and get your jump #'s up. I would rather be sitting in a plane on the way to altitude than be sitting on the ground

new jumper @ 1.4333 wing loading
blackout replied to bodypilot90's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is one of the advantages of being small, You can downsize to something "cool" and still be within a safe wing loading -
I am not planning on swooping any time soon but perhaps someone could help me. I have a sabre 170 loaded under 1:1 and it seems like I am doing pull ups on the front risers with no result. Was just trying to do front riser dives as I hear this helps with high wind penetration. I am maybe 140-150 out the door so I am sure this has something to do with it. Any comments or ideas?

Maybe some tunnel time would help you, not on exit obviously but would help stability issues. I am a low time jumper too and frankly exits were a problem for me till jump 15. I did have a bad habit of putting my hands down to catch my fall. The only thing you have to ask yourself is, whether or not it is fun for you. Doesnt matter if you do nothing but tandems for ever or if you have to do some extra AFF jumps. If it is fun stick with it. I passed all my AFF jumps but failed a coach jump which isnt really a set back but definitely a blow to the ego i know what you mean. If you stick with it and have the will you can find a way. I still practice my moves at home and day dream my dive flows at work.

Winter Skydiving in the Northeast
blackout replied to daddy1313's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Jumping during the winter is fun and exhilarating in the winter time, just make sure you wear gloves. -
fear is a good thing, it lets us know we are still alive and humble. It is our job to overcome that fear and not let it get the best of us. I tend to be afraid until the door opens, then I remember why I was on the plane and out I go.

Jumping at diffrent DZ's?
blackout replied to Cold-air-rising's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I asked that question at my home DZ and was told that most places will ok me to continue training there and worst case would call my home DZ to confirm my status -
would you jump your kid's pack job?
blackout replied to dropzonejunky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am only at 18 jumps now, and not having taken a packing class am not fully familiar with it. I do have a general idea but anyway a fellow skydiver at cross keys that I have seen and talked to almost every time I jumped asked me to pack his rig so it will be interesting to see if i see him again. I asked him to please repack it himself as he wasnt jumping it for a while and he said "would it make you feel better if i told you i would?" Just thought it was funny -
Fastest way to fall on Belly?
blackout replied to tripleflip18's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Are you jumping with booties? I had this problem doing a coach jump which pretty much involved catching up to my coach. He is 220+ pounds and I might be 150 out of the door. Not to mention we are about the same height. He falls much faster than me. I used what he called swooping. Sort of in between forward movement and tracking. You keep your elbows back like you would in a forward movement and your legs straight out like in a track but tilt it as much as you can, this will give you both better forward speed and fall rates. Just my opinion. Or use weights. -
how often do you do in air handle check?
blackout replied to shermanator's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I check them about 10 times in the plane, I am paranoid like that though. always better safe than sorry -
There are obviously a lot of factors involved, wouldnt the manufacturer be the best bet? Or if you have experience with GL, do some experimenting to find out. of course warmer air is going to give you a steeper glide as is lower barometric pressure and higher altitudes will as well obviously. I doubt that calculations will get you much further than a general idea anyway. Not to thread jack but can you use a typical skydiving canopy for GL?
-
I bought used gear on here but I bought all name brand stuff so to speak, and made everything turned out well. Usually you can use a rigger as a third party to hold the container till everything is check out, then money is sent. Some people do not like doing that but chances are, they are trying to rip you off in the first place. I would not jump something that a professional did not examine first, so why would you pay money for something you wouldnt jump.
-
Are you referring to the parachute itself? That depends on the UV damage and how many holes/patches it has in it and what not. I have a Sabre 170 DOM 92. It has 2 patches in it but otherwise seems to be ok. I asked my rigger what he thought while he was doing a cypres install and reserve repack and he said, "yea it should be alright" Well I am still here so. I picked it up for 500 bucks and it looks and flies great. Still pretty crinkly for 16 years old. I figure I only need it for 100 or so jumps, then I will probably pass it on to my up and coming friend who jumps with me so she can start her rig.

wow tunnel jumper at 3 years old, they could be freeflying right off student status at 18 haha. If I ever have children they will be tunnel flying asap. Hopefully by then the philly or NYC tunnel will be open haha. Some parents push their kids in football or baseball, I will be pushing them in skydiving! It is so much more fun than "normal" sports

I would be pretty sure that cross keys in williamstown NJ offers canopy courses. They offered me a few despite asking for the course
