Do you think the video footage of Irwin's death should be shown?
PLFXpert replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
Certainly, you might not. And furthermore, it's a little silly to think what can be learned from Irwin's death is "stay away from the top of a ray" when, in fact, people pet them in the wild all the time w/out incidence. But we do know rays CAN sting and such stings CAN be deadly; like anything else. I agree with the points made that there will be some who probably will regard the usually docile ray as a threat now and be more likely to kill it. That really, REALLY saddens me. But, I don't think airing or not airing the footgage has anything to do with that. Just word of mouth regarding what happened "man dies by ray sting" is enough for some people, unfortunately. P.S. Ellen is on now. And I love her show. So I must go. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

This is true. A larger version of the picture examined more carefully would reveal that. Of course, I simply posted a familiar picture and made note of its fame. I would have hoped anyone responding to it would have either A. already been familiar with it or B. done a little research first. I myself just did a little more investigating and found this link which I found interesting. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/004/666noxlw.asp (The article also mentions the bullet exiting the prisoner's head in the photo.) Bobbi's original question was of morals. Is it morally right or wrong to air a man's death publicly and why/why not? Red herrings aside, I felt this particular photo evokes a lot of thought on that subject; regardless of how one ultimately feels about its publishing. In addition, since it is a past event it is a lot easier for one to form an opinion as to whether or not it should or should not have been made available to the public. I'm curious, too. And, I'm also a scuba diver. Certainly it is not up to me to decide whether or not something can be learned and taken from seeing the footage of Irwin's death. Ironically it would only be after seeing the footage I could definitively say imo whether it should have been shown or not. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

There's a thread here somewhere where you and I were just discussing the clearness of the water and the more frequent visits of the rays. I see them all the time. I love seeing them. I love to watch them ride the waves. Of course, that's just me. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -
I do and I probably PAY more than $750 for it too. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

Exactly. The point (my original one before the tangent) is desired impact; be it a photo or video published publicly. (I myself have not seen the video, either. But there was, in fact, video footage.) Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

I think a better/more clear example would be: In my avatar, is it safe to conclude I am descending or is it simply implied? Certainly some photos make implications. And I support the whole "question everything" philosophy. In the case of the Vietnam execution photo and my avatar, however, knowledge ceases to make these photos implications. Instead one can view them w/ certainty. Edit: Of course none of this has anything to do w/ my original point. Instead this was the detail that apparently was concentrated on; and I decided to refute. And so we are way off topic. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

I find it sad when people in a debate feel the need to resort to such things. My time spent in this discussion with you has obviously been wasted. I will not make such mistakes again. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

Again. Point missed. Grizzly Man video is NOT the same as the photo of (or for Squeak, let's say I attached an actual video of) a Vietnam execution. My previous response once again: Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

What IS and what IS NOT appropriate to present to the public was the original question. My photo example is relevant. Good Lord. By your logic, photos must "imply" everything. The photo, was in fact, taken during the execution. It doesn't "imply" anything. It is a freeze frame of a factual moment in time; not an implied one. Some photos can be making an implication. The example I used was not. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

PLFXpert replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
Agreed, the fact the trigger was pulled and released a bullet is not entirely clear from the photo alone. The accompanying story cleared that up firmly. Anyone viewing the picture would know what is taking place; or even if they just read the photo's caption "Vietnam Execution". I seriously doubt anyone who opened my attachment or first saw the photo published questioned whether or not a man was shot. My point, again: In addtion, I previously made the statement that while I do not (yet) see merit in publicly airing the death of Irwin, sometimes publicly showing a man's death IS appropriate. I then referenced the execution photo and simply asked what people's thoughts are in that particular case. It sounds to me your issue is that I posted a photo example rather than a video. Well, OK then. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

Do you think the video footage of Irwin's death should be shown?
PLFXpert replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
Thank you, Captain Obvious. Although I would say "during" an execution rather than "before". That was not my point. It is clear in the photo what is taking place. Sometimes I think a photo is more shocking than video footage as it is a particular image in freeze frame. This and other photos were quite controversial as to whether or not they should be published publicly. And it, too, is of a man's death. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

Obviously Irwin did not know how he would die. Telling his camera men to continue filming in such an event was, imo, a "just-in-case". Ie: Just in case something could be learned from it. He was, afterall, a teacher in many ways. Seems fitting. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

I was thinking of using that as an example, too, but it doesn't quite illustrate my point that sometimes such footage or photos are merited. During the Vietnam war, the attached photo (taken by Eddie Adams) was published publicly and became almost instantly famous. I'd be curious to know what people's thoughts are on it and other examples of that nature. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -

In this particular case, I would likely not be in favor of publicly showing the footage. There are situations/cases, however, I would be in favor of showing such tragedies. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. -
I once broke myself of saying "ya'll" and my southern accent thinking it wouldn't serve me well in the professional world later in life. On the contrary, both the former serve me quite well in sales. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
