Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
grannyinthesky replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Oh, I'm so putting that cartoon on my office door. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
But this wouldn't really be a mistake then, would it? "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Why aren't chicks interested in r/c planes?
grannyinthesky replied to cocheese's topic in The Bonfire
That's my thought, too. My brother is really involved with rc aircraft and he has never even offered to show me how to fly one. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
I try to make new mistakes every time. It's no fun repeating ones I've already done "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Now I'd never throw rocks and bricks, but maybe a roll or two of tp or a bar of soap your way..... "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Thanks for the correction. I guess maybe I need to take that astronomy class for sure. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Cool idea... THat could be a lot of fun, except for the banned ones!! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Thanks for the post. I saw what you were describing on my way to work this morning and it was nice to know what I was looking at. I plan on taking an astronomy class in the spring, but right now, I don't know much of anything about what I see. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

What funny thing happened on the way to work this morning?
grannyinthesky replied to cocheese's topic in The Bonfire
Yes, I do work. I'm starting my days at 8am with precalculus followed by teaching calculus at 9. With the absolutely horrible weather here today 4-8 inches of snow in the last 24 hours, I don't think there's goiing to be anything remotely funny happening on the way to work. I'm excited. Plans have changed and I'm going to be able to get there Thursday night for the second weekend. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?

As a parent, I can understand the desire to protect my children, but i also realize that I cannot wrap them in a cocoon and not allow them the chance to live full lives. My kids are in their 30's but I hope I would have had the wisdom to allow them to choose to skydive if that had been their choice. There are much worse things kids can choose to do. College education...worth the effort/expense?
grannyinthesky replied to livendive's topic in The Bonfire
I was 41 before I completed my masters. It wasn't easy, but it was very satisfying. I love learning as much or more than I love teaching. I don't believe it's ever a wasted effort. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
College education...worth the effort/expense?
grannyinthesky replied to livendive's topic in The Bonfire
I was 34 when I decided to go to college and get a degree. I ended up with a BA and an MA. It was a scary decision to quit my job and be a full time student, but it has been well worth it Go for it. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
College education...worth the effort/expense?
grannyinthesky replied to livendive's topic in The Bonfire
A college degree is well worth the time, money and effort. I spent many years trying to support myself and my two kids working dead end, low wage jobs. Not only am I now able to earn substantially more now, I can work at a job I really like. After working in a variety of jobs that includes account clerk, movie theater manager, grocery checker, deli worker and assorted others, I can do what I love and get paid for it. I don't know which I like better, doing math or teaching math. (I've got to admit that skydiving has taken the top spot in my life lately, but the college education is paying off even there. Because of my job, I was able to afford that first tandem jump that got me hooked on this crazy life.) "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
"Needy" seems to have a negative connotation in your question. I don't think it is needy to want to be with others. Rather, it is a real human need to want companionship and the company of other people. If, however, you can't stand to be alone ever, then I would think there is a problem. Never wanting the company of others would be the other side of that coin and isn't particularly desirable either. I think for the most part, we need a balance of soitude and company to thrive. Mom won't let me go, how can I convince her?
grannyinthesky replied to AlexEvanczuk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, it might, but speaking as a mother (and grandmother), it might have got me in the air at a whole lot younger age. I do realize I'm probably not a standard model mom and grandma, but i know I'm not the only one who likes a little excitement in her life. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
That's probably my second place reason. The fun/excitement of jumping is the first place reason. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I'll second that. I'd sure like to be able to do pictures like that some day. [big sigh] "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Flaring too soon is probably better than what I did on my first 2 jumps which was to not flare further than my shoulders. You don't slow down much when you do that. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I'm puzzled.......How do you figure the instructor is at fault, here or in the other times you are refering to. From my limited perspective and having to repeat a jump, I don't see anything that would have been my instructor's fault. Some of the AFF descriptions here sound like the curriculum is pushing students to do a lot really fast. My instructor has been following the ISP in the SIM which really makes a nice sequence of the necessary skills. Even with that, you need to learn a radically different skillset than skills learned in the earthbound world and there is very little time to practice them. Doing things less than perfectly is to be expected..... "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Yeah, I guess there are, but that side of things has been about a quiet as the skydiving side. Besides, I really, really, really want to jump. It's damned hard to learn how if you can't get in the air. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I grew up in the San Francisco area. Not much skiing there. I'd like to learn, but I already have two expensive activities with skydiving and photography. I don't think I can afford another one. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

In Miami, with only 6 jumps, about my only option would have been a tourist tandem. On top of that, the weather was pretty stormy most of the time I was there. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Try snow day after day after day...........I haven't been able to jump since the 6th. The closest I have come is going to the DZ to learn to pack. The 10 day forecast for here says snow EVERY day. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
