I can't come up with a better explanation. You could go off on a conspiracy theory and say it's a type of registration leading to confiscation. But even if it is what you describe (which I agree with), what is the point? Are you going to send kids to special counselors / evaluators because their parents own guns? Are you going to put them in special classrooms? Are you going to hire special staff just to track them? How are you going to single out these children and make their lives more difficult? Maybe a special patch on their clothing like the Nazis made the Jews wear? (I bring that up to point out it is highly unlikely anyone is going to single out these children and make it a positive or neutral thing) I really can't think of a way this doesn't go badly. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Easier for the Brits, isn't it? They kept their Pound intact. Maybe they were always thinking of being able to pull out? Culturally, it probably went against the grain to be one of the Union after being an Empire so recently. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. The original organization, European Iron and Coal or some such, was to make economic links that would inhibit the Germans invading everyone (especially the French) anymore. Good idea. It grew. Getting rid of the passports between countries and such was probably good. Not fighting is definitely good. But I think another level of government was too far...and it has run its course. Might be time to remove that extraneous level of government. Not sure where that would leave the economic activity, though. Someone has to mint those Euros. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

I had it playing in the office. Only caught pieces. I didn't see that he was kissing off the Union, but looking to get the UK a better deal within it. Of course, that could be the first step towards the door. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Disturbed felon had gun permit, arsenal, Minnesota police say
davjohns replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
Sorry. I tried to give you some credibility and read what you posted. I couldn't get through the first piece, because it does not say what you pretend it does. It argues that the NRA has not been consistent in its position on checks and waiting periods. If I were to cherry pick like you did, I would present (from the same article): "NRA published a firearms control pamphlet in which they said "a waiting-period could help in reducing crimes of passion and preventing people with criminal records or dangerous mental histories from acquiring guns."" "...NRA abandoned its earlier opposition to "gun control" laws and supported instant background checks at the point of sale--requiring an expensive and non-existent federal computerized system of criminal records to be created and be accessible by gun dealers." "This year the NRA is against the Brady Bill because it only requires a waiting-period but not a background check." "Several times this year the NRA has supported both waiting-periods and background checks." "After decades of battling gun control advocates, the NRA has become one." When everything was in context, the author was clearly an advocate of more gun control and against the NRA. But his list of 'facts' is heavily laced with his opinion of goals and intents of the NRA and he ends with no rational argument either way. Your selection of one part was not representative of the piece, (just like my selection here) so I decided to save myself the trouble of reading the others. This is what I was trying to tell you. You are not persuading me by ignoring the facts in the article and cherry pickings quotes from others. There are lots of coherent, reasonable arguments for reasonable and effect controls on firearms. You aren't presenting any right now. Nothing personal. Just picking at your logic, really. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Disturbed felon had gun permit, arsenal, Minnesota police say
davjohns replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
So, the official on the ground, who had more facts than us at his disposal, assessed that this was a failure of government agencies to enforce the standard. You, with only this article and your beliefs to go on, reject that assessment in favor of blaming a private organization that had no apparent involvement? I admit that I haven't been following the plethora of threads with fastidious fascination. But I don't recall anyone denouncing criminal checks or mental health checks. I agree with those who rejected mental evaluations, but mental health checks are an existing part of the system...a system that did not function in this case and should be corrected / held accountable. Nothing in the article suggested the laws were at fault / porous / ineffective. It said the law was not being enforced. Generally, I think that has been the NRA position as well. I don't care to defend everything the NRA does, but I'm not sure villification by insinuating they want murderous lunatics to have guns is going to win me over to your side of this argument. Clearly, it is not. As the article stated, the system failed. The state agencies did not do what they were supposed to do. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Which is more important -- my rights, or your safety?
davjohns replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
...they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. Among these are...the pursuit of happiness. (from memory) Plain English seems to indicate nobody needs to interfere with the reasonable pursuit of happiness by the individual. Moreover, governments are instituted among men to protect these rights. So, the government needs to protect rather than inhibit. I have to side with the minority of judges that are viewing driving as a right. In the time the US Constitution was formed, I'm sure they would not have considered riding a horse or walking as a 'privilege'. I think driving is analogous. My fencing instructor has us juggle to work on speed and coordination. I can do two with one hand or three with both hands. I haven't made any attempt to go further. Perhaps I should...just for fun. I was the first officer in my department to carry a Glock. I was in the ER one day and the Xray techs were asking about it. They had to Xray it to prove to themselves that all they had heard was not true. I had the Xray for a long time. It was clearly a gun. Metal throughout the weapon. But they were fed a line by the media and bought it. That piece of drivel is still out there and being believed by people. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. You guys totally messed up this thread. There I was...imagining my ear pressed to a magnificent breast...listening to it and it's friend talk quietly to me of subtle pleasures...feeling the creamy softness against my cheek...relishing the firm, yet yielding flesh that is like no other... Then you threw in the mental image of wild animals rending people apart....jerks. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I call myself a Southern Atheist. That means I don't care about football. In the South, college ball receives more attention than relgigion...and they are pretty religious. But I was small as I went through school, so I played soccer and shot on the rifle team. I never played football or baseball, so I can't identify with those guys. That's why I participate in sports where I mostly depend on myself and my equipment. I agree with you. Getting all worked up because someone you don't know excelled at a child's game seems silly. I live in Central FL and I wasn't about to tell you to move here. She's right, it IS too hot! I would love to move to NC (Asheville is a beautiful area), but I'm not sure how close it is to a dz. Hmmmm....my visits to central Florida are typically in the winter and I find it wonderful. I am considering wintering there and spending summers in Chattanooga when I retire. Highly recommend Chattanooga. Lovely area. All the conveniences you need. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I've been serving 28 years so far. I would like to think people would adhere to their oath to protect and defend the constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. But, as we see, some people think the constitution should be more flexible and absolutes are not so absolute. Also, there is the question of how many service members understand the constitution or take the oath seriously. Nothing is a given. Nothing. You mean the War of Northern Agression? Actually, few people make the connection that what the Southern states were doing was pretty much the same as what the 13 Colonies did...just less successful. In International Relations, the difference between a Civil War and a Revolution is just which side wins. I'll read the article. What I wrote is not my opinion. I'm not much of a historian. It's from a series on US History that I listened to on CD once as part of my attempt to fill the gap left by my daydreaming in school. The instructor purported to be a historian. I didn't ask the CD for identification. I'll try to find a link. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Politically, it was about state rights vs federalism. There is little doubt that Lincoln's motivation was federalism. Realistically, it was about money. The Southern states were buying products cheaper from their trade partners in Europe than what they could get them for from the North. The ships picking up cotton, also delivered cheap goods. The Northern states wanted to place tariffs on those goods to force the South to buy Northern goods. The South rebelled (no pun). After two years of loss, Northern determination for the war was flagging. Lincoln knew he could not keep public support under the banner of federalism. So, he staged an information operations campaign to re-brand the war as being about the moral issue of slavery. Abolitionists were happy to pretend it had been that way all along. So, armed with moral indignation, the North continued the war under a banner it had not begun under. And then the history books were written...
