Ok. Bad advice. I should also point out that I was also under a big a$$ 265 square foot F11 canopy..... no hot/fast landings on that! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Medical Insurance and Jumping

I just posted about a tib/fib/ankle fracture and recovery time in another post. Right before I did that a guy at our dz had broke his ankle and was in the midst of insurance battle. First thing I asked those who landed with me (off dz landing) was to take all my gear off (while my ankle was kind of dangling there) and get it out of there. To this day my story was I was jogging along side this road... I tripped and fell down a ditch and that is how I received my injuries. That's my story and I am sticking to it! (It was back in 97)! I broke tib/fib and ankle bones October 12th. First surgery was October 13th. I was in a boot (they never put a hard cast on) and was non weight bearing until second surgery that removed screws that were holding tib and fib together in place. Second surgery was 2nd week of December. Weight bearing at that point. I jumped the 3rd week (roughly) in January. I kinda did a butt slide in just in case. I currently have a plate (6 screws in there) and another 2 screws in some part of my ankle) Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Psychological issues of a students first free fall
kmills0705 replied to Chris_K's topic in Instructors
Directly from the SIM. I am not sure what you think your student did wrong if his first reaction was to pull and NOT focus on being stable: A. Exit and freefall 1. Pull priorities: a. Jumpers must deploy at the planned altitude, regardless of stability. b. Priorities are in the following order of importance (top down): (1) Pull. (2) Pull at the correct altitude. (3) Pull while stable. Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I -

Second Life is the largest virtual world community on the internet. I am guessing someone decided to build a virtual DZ in Second Life. Some people are big into it. The only way I know is I had to create a business in Second Life as a project for a class I was taking. Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Yes, if you try to buy direct via website of a manufacturer you will get a list of available dealers. I bought a new canopy last fall (to put in a used container) and shopped around for the best discount. Call dealers and see who will give you the best deal. Mike from Chuting Star was able to give me the best discount on an Aerodyne canopy. The only problem I had is one cell (which happened to be a white cell) of my canopy was very sticky. I reported it to Mike who in turn asked Aerodyne and they said it had extra silicone on it. Well, it has yet to "dry" up and every little thing clings to it. It has me frustrated. I think I will post asking if anyone has had this issue. Good luck. Buying gear is both stressful and fun! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Dealing with surgery and physical therapy
kmills0705 replied to schmit.paul's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had a tib/fib/ankle fx many years ago. It happened in October and I was non weight bearing until December at which time I had a second surgery to remove some hardware and allow me to bear weight. Luckily it was winter in Indiana and not a lot of jumping going on. But I did hobble around the DZ every weekend just to hang out and watch and be a part of it. I did go up in co-pilot seat of King Air a few times. It was a blast and later fueled my desire to someday become a pilot. After my second surgery in December I start PT and made my first jump back in January. It was cold, I planned on butt sliding in and everything was fine. Probably not the smartest thing to do... but when your a junkie your a junkie! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I -

We have kids, property, etc. I was going to file paperwork myself, but was a little leary, so I found a lawyer that charged $500 for an uncontested divorce. All he did was file exactly what I gave him (I wrote the divorce decree) so I am not sure what I really paid for. I totally could have done it myself. Check out your local library website. Ours had complete instructions on "do it yourself" divorce complete with paperwork that had all the blanks that you could fill in electronically and print. It doesn't have to be difficult. Does anyone know what Palatka's hours are? My boyfriend and I are heading down to Florida to visit a friend of mine in Jacksonville.Palatka is the closest DZ (that I know of). We will be getting in on a Friday around noon and were hoping to get in a couple jumps on Friday. We also plan on spending all day Saturday jumping. We have sent a couple emails and called but no one has been around which leads me to think they are only open Saturday/Sunday. Being from Indiana and having sub zero temps lately we need our winter fix!!!!!! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

I'm in Indiana and Franklin, IN (about 10 miles south of Indianapolis) will put a plane up anytime there is a load of jumpers. Richard Money is the owner and it is a great laid back C-182 drop zone. I went there a couple days after New Year's (for the first time in many years). There were 4 of us and he said as long as there is a load willing to jump he will fly the plane. I also thought it was funny when he said "I will guarantee you 70 degrees at altitude". And then finished it with "Until the door opens". Great DZ. Just thought I would add that there are DZ's north of TN that do jump year round. Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

Being in the frozen tundra known as Indiana, 4,000' from a C-182 on Jan 3rd was all we could get in. It was a little chilly, but damn worth it. Heading to sunny FLA at the end of the month. I feel for you on the tib/fib fx. I had the same thing (along with multiple ankle bones) several years ago. I made a jump 3 weeks after my second surgery... just do a butt slide in and you will be fine ;) Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I -
I found both buying and selling used gear to be quite stressful. I found a rig here on dz.com that was exactly what I wanted - a J3 with under 100 jumps. I started e-mailing the seller about payment. He was a rigger in VT selling gear for a friend and wouldn't ship without payment. Didn't want to do the escrow thing with my rigger. So I contacted my rigger (Jay Stokes) gave him the specs/pictures and asked him if it were reasonable priced and if the rigger in question was reputable. He came back and said it was reasonably priced and had some contacts "check out" the seller. In the meantime I listed my old Javelin from student days (a honking big Javelin J7) and immediately got interest from Mike Mullins wanting to buy it. Mike of course wanted it shipped to him for inspection before he paid. So there I was in a situation where I needed to mail out $2500 to a guy I didn't know. At the same time I was sending off my complete rig without payment until it was inspected. In the end it all worked out. I am sure both Mark from VT and Mullins thinks I am a bit neurotic as I e-mailed them on a daily basis. I actually went as far as "threatening" Mark. I sent him an e-mail stating "and by the way the guy I am dating is a special agent with the FBI. If this is not legit you will be tracked down". I can ONLY IMAGINE how much he laughed when he received that!!!! (I neglected that I used to date an FBI guy and no longer was dating him). What a nut I was!!!! Since then I have bought and sold jumpsuits, altimeters and smaller things all without incident. I recommend the following: 1) Get a reference for the seller (preferable a known rigger or DZO). If a DZO or Rigger is willing to vouch for the seller you are probably safe 2) Talk to the person so you know you have a legit phone number. Communicate with the person as much as you can. Someone who is trying to scam you isn't going to let out a lot of identifying information. 3) Get a valid address to send money to rather than a PO Box or something like that. Or better yet use Paypal (a lot of people don't like Paypal because of high fees. If the sale is high dollar the seller loses a lot off the top). 4) Know you are taking a chance. I have been lucky, but also trust your instincts. I managed to get exactly what I wanted and am glad I didn't pass up the sale. I got my beautiful Javelin J3 (with a harness size that was a perfect fit C16 which is hard to find). I hope this helps. Disclaimer: This was my personal experience. I am sure many others have different advice and opinions. Kim Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

I will agree that Paypal now sucks. I won't use it. When I got divorced recently the ex kept the eBay account with over 100 feedbacks. I then created a new account (though still using the Paypal account I had for years and years) and when I sold something Paypal held my money since I was "new". They held it until the buyer had received the item, left me positive feedback and then it was released about 2 days later. I was not happy. I even contacted them and someone who I am sure was from India was of zero help. They call it "protection". Bull-bleep if you ask me. Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

May 15, 1993 Lebanon Maine. It was a static line. I made 7 jumps that summer and then quit because I was a poor college student. Then I started again on April 19, 1997 in Greensburg, IN where I went through the entire static line progression and then made it through my D License, a s/l jumpmaster rating and a s/l instructor rating. Then I got pregnant in May 2000 and stopped jumping while I did the wife/mom thing. Then started once again in September 2007 (nothing like a good divorce to get you back in the air). I don't plan on EVER stopping again!!! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I

I pretty much don't speak unless spoken to in terms of airport security folks. I can fondly remember back to pre-9/11 days where I went through security with my rig, a laptop (which I kept in the bag) and a live kitten in a soft-sided pet carrier that looked like a duffle bag and didn't have a single question asked when I slid it on though the x-ray belt. I am not sure putting the cat through was a good idea, but he survived it! Kim Mills USPA D21696 Tandem I, AFF I and Static Line I
