  1. now you are mixing the imperial system with the metric. decimal points are from the metric system you should have said 8LB's and 8/10's or some fraction. maybe you have already adopted the metric system without knowing? What he meant was 8lb 12oz 12dr 22gr (although if interested in the volumes of precious metals, different ounces would be used
  2. Newly released Bsuh administration memo. judiciary.senate.gov/resources/documents/upload/010509OLCDoc-FurtherMaterialBreach.pdf Interesting discussion on page 2 about how to justify invading Iraq depends on the meaning of "and".
  3. Oh? Really? Where's your metric time? Still 24 hours each made of 60 minutes each made of 60 seconds the last time I looked. What, exactly, makes radians superior? Just two examples. You've been brainwashed into thinking it's a superior system when, in fact, it's just as arbitrary as anything. The SI system only uses seconds, and standard multiples (MILLI, NANO, ETC). Minutes and hours are not SI units. The SI system is superior because it is rational (in the technical sense). Other everyday SI units we use are volts, amperes, and ohms. Anyone know the Imperial unit of electric current?
  4. That's as ridiculous as claiming pedophilia is a way of suppressing a priest's natural bodily function. BTW, I take a pill every day to suppress my natural bodily function of overproducing cholesterol. the overproduction of cholesterol is not a natural body function. that is hypercholesteremia, which is a medical condition requiring medical intervention, i.e. the taking of medication. it is not "natural." Of course it's natural. A huge percentage of the population does it quite naturally. It doesn't "require" intervention. Same would apply to pills that lower blood pressure. High blood pressure is quite natural, it's just not healthy.
  5. And that's a damn shame. Because the metric system is just plain easier. And we Americans tend to like easy. Heck -- we decimalized the money, why not measurements???. Because it's not easier, Wendy. It's only easy when you're starting from scratch. How many millions of road signs out there have mile indicators on them? What will it cost in time to fix them all? And how will people's lives be improved if the numbers are in km instead of miles? Time still isn't base 10. attoseconds femtoseconds picoseconds nanoseconds microseconds milliseconds seconds Must be base 1000.
  6. When a kilogram's a liter, the math is much neater. yes, but if my 7th grade science serves me, for 1 liter to weight 1 kg, the specific gravity of the liquid has to be 1.0 - higher than that it weighs more than 1 kg. The context was previously stated to be "pure water".
  7. It never 'weighs' 1 kg, it masses 1 kg. Weight is a fickle concept that varies with altitude. No poetry in your soul!
  8. When a kilogram's a liter, the math is much neater.
  9. a US pint of water weighs 1.04375 pounds 1 US pint = 0.83267384 REAL Imperial pints The imperial (UK) gallon is defined as 10 pounds of pure water so a real pint = 1.25 lbs of water. "A pint of pure water weighs a pound and a quarter"?
  10. I was just going to say, at least we use one system unlike you chaps across the pond over there... Take a look at the dimensions of any car made in the US in the last 25 years (mine has a "3.0 LITER engine" for example, and all metric nuts and bolts). Then report back.

  12. Why? Same reason that music students want to study with top musicians and skydivers go to tunnel camps with Airspeed.
  13. OK, why did you bring up England then? Because I was giving some highlights to demonstrate that knife murders are a serious problem. It was not to start a debate about comparing the two nations. Oh gimme a break. You don't really expect anyone to buy that, do you?
  14. I made very good friends w/ a lot of the m.e's on the last powerhouse we built. 90%. Nice guys but dumb as rocks. I told a few I was thinking about going back to school and getting my degree. (in ME) They said don't bother. We're a dime a dozen. I think they were making 600-1000 a week. The smartest I met were the asian guys. Sharp as a tack. We had like 50 in one room. (Bechtel). Hell. I was making a couple grand a week. They killed me w/ the paperwork and the beancounters tho. Think I'll stick to the tools on the next one. Less headaches. They didn't call my office the HEADACHE SHACK for nothing. www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Mechanical_Engineer/Salary Those Asians you mentioned, would they by any chance have come to the US to get their engineering degrees?
  15. Objects don't cause anything. Ok, what (object/tool) is used by more criminals to kill or murder? Swimming pools? I know there are those out here who know the answers. Problem is (for those who might know) is what causes more deaths is not linked to a political agenda now is it! Come on, somebody can google it or find out another way very fast. I know you can. (hint) it aint guns The US Dept. of Justice knows. www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/weapons.htm

  17. Gasoline is plenty regulated as far as accidents are concerned. Mucho rules on refining, distribution, storage, pumps, pumping, and vehicle gas tanks. The fact is, this is REALLY a gun thread, and criminal use of guns for murder far exceeds the criminal use of gasoline, so the premise of the entire thread is dumb.
  18. This thread is about a CRIMINAL use of gasoline, NOT about accidents.
  19. How many people have to die from a particular substance before you start caring about them? Just trying to find the scope of the problem. I don't read about many drive-by gasolinings, I expect its just the liberal media suppressing the stories, like they suppress the drive-by drowning murders committed with swimming pools.
  20. Source: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090101/ap_on_re_us/aspen_evacuations Gosh, he had guns he could have used to kill people, but instead he chose to use gasoline to try and commit mayhem. We obviously need some more gasoline-control laws. Just so we know the relative level of risk, can you compare the number of murders committed with gasoline in 2008 to those committed with guns?
  21. It thought it was a pretty good last "Fuck you" from him to the country. Given it's the same state where the gov tore up Meiggs Field rather than follow the process, it doesn't seem too surprising either. It definitely puts the DNC and the Senate overall in an awkward situation. Still, I put his odds at being accepted at well under 50/50. The Mayor (Daley) tore up Meigs, not the gov.
  22. tidal attraction. As the moon cooled, the denser material collected towards Earth, and, since it is imbalanced, it keeps the heavy side towards us. I think. No!
  23. I've seen plenty of negative commentary on CK. Besides, if appointed she won't be a 74 year old heartbeat away from the presidency
  24. Oliver North - there's a guy with credibility. I guess you've forgotten Iran Contra, his lies, and his conviction that was only overturned with the assistance of the ACLU because his admission of guilt was immunized! You are a funny guy.
