When you look at ALL the data points, you find that there are examples all over the place: There are countries with no legal guns and few gun murders. There are countries with no legal guns and lots of gun murders. There are countries with lots of legal guns and few gun murders. There are countries with lots of legal guns and lots of gun murders. When such great inconsistency exists, there can be no proof of any correlation. If you can't prove causation, then there's no point in talking about correlation. Unless you're trying to fool people into believing something that isn't true. That is EXACTLY the reason that proper statistical methods are needed. Statistical analysis shows correlation between gun ownership and gun fatalities. That is all.

I think we should teach FJC students the 45 degree rule. They can work out for themselves that it's bullshit. Why stop there? The Earth is center of the universe and is flat; phlogiston, there are only 4 elements, etc. Let the little darlings figure it out for themselves.

Right Right again So that's why places like Chicago and Washington D.C. have the highest murder rates in the nation, while also having a gun ban in effect? And why Wyoming, with one of the highest gun ownership rates in the country, has the lowest murder rate? And why countries like Switzerland with a citizen militia, where nearly every home contains a full-auto assault rifle, also has a very low murder rate? Me thinks your cited studies have a few problems they need to explain... Methinks you confuse isolated cherry picked data points with statistical relevance. Methinks comparing cities with nations is apples to oranges. (Not to mention that Dallas has a higher homicide rate than Chicago, and that easliy circumvented local "bans" are silly and irrelevant).

It has nothing whatsoever with torture or the topic at hand. A weak attempt at diversion.

Societal issues. Very TRUE - In Australian society only 5.2% of adults own and use firearms. Too bad there's no correlation between firearms ownership and murder, huh? Right Right again

That doesn't sound like a nuclear threat to me. None so deaf as those that will not hear.

No, because OZ has already taken realistic steps to control firearms, unlike the USA. Your arguments are specious. See the attached chart showing Aussie homicide rates. (Source: http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:Asxq22dkM8kJ:www.aic.gov.au/publications/tandi2/tandi261.pdf+australia+murder+rate+chart&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us) The gun ban and buyback was in 1998. Now, tell me how the gun ban caused lower murder rates. As you can see, the murder rate was already going down BEFORE the gun ban. And then leveled off AFTER the gun ban. And yet you see this as proof of the effectiveness of the gun ban in reducing murder! Now that's specious. Not to worry though. As long as it's not as bad as America, you shouldn't concern yourself with it. There's nothing to see here. You have nothing to fear. Move along... What an impressive misinterpretation of data. Have you been practising?

Cool. A pile of 1^24 Z$ bills would be about 9,000 light years high. -
12% of murders in America are with a knife. But we shouldn't worry ourselves with that, because it's just a minority in the statistics. 11% of murders in Australia are with a gun, but guns are a horrible thing that should be eliminated from private ownership, and we shouldn't do a thing about knives, which are responsible for four times as many murders. See anything contradictory there? No, because OZ has already taken realistic steps to control firearms, unlike the USA. Your arguments are specious.

Ingenious use of a very misleading statistic, Mr. Rich. The knife murder rate in Oz is slightly lower than the knife murder rate in the USA. The gun murder rate in Oz is way way less than the gun murder rate in the USA. So the question you should ask is WHY is the GUN murder rate in the USA so out of line with other developed nations?

You too should check your facts BEFORE posting drivel.

So, you're against Obama's reversal of the ban? You should check your facts BEFORE posting.

Waht you dont say here is that you would use cap n trade to run the prices up so hight (artificailly I might add) to support a tech that is not yet there. A head of it time so to speak. To support your beliefs and screw up the free market. For "free markets" to work, ALL costs have to be included. That includes the costs of sustainability and fixing environmental damage.

How about: "I'm a XXXXXXX and while I do not support abortion, I also believe what a woman does with her own body is no-one's business but hers" as an option? I don't think taxpayers should fund abortions, but the "gag rule" was just plain wrong.

Such a Parcel o' Rogues in a Nation - by Robert Burns
Capt.Slog replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
A lot of people are into sex. You'd be surprised. -
I feel (if true) it really puts thing into perspective. So when we add 6% to the carbon in the atmosphere, and the total increases by 6%annually, we HAVE upset the balance. How many years at 6% does it take to double the atmospheric CO2? Hmm, that is a very static way of looking at it. You really think it works that way? Perhaps you had not noticed, but the increase in atmospheric CO2 almost exactly matches the rate at which humans are pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.

Are you suggesting that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be tried for war crimes, then?

The height of Scottish culture! -
Your statement, as always, is accurate in the wider community, but in THIS forum the advocates of torture have been pretty exclusively those whose posting history shows a very definite tilt to the right.

Seems like we've done a damn good job of creating another enemy there.

Which EU States Will Offer Home To Ex-Gitmo Inmates?
Capt.Slog replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
Only if you make the (LARGE) assumption that they were not an enemy to begin with. If we have any proof that they were, then we should put them on trial. If we don't have any such proof, the assumption you mention is not large at all. -
The more we learn of nature's laws, the less we need to invoke intervention by supernatural beings to explain things.

Obama's mistake was keeping on a Republican as Secretary of Defense, who then recommended a crony to be his deputy and recommended a waiver from ethics rules for him. Obama SHOULD have cleaned house across the board. I remember when Bush tried to do a little of this in a Dept and the Dems screamed about it!!!! Oh, this is good shit Are you trying to deny that Gates recommended the nomination and the waiver? Gates IS a Republican. Nope, not doing that at all. Why? It is odd that the right is being so hypocritical about this. You all applauded when Obama kept Gates as SecDef, but when Obama accepts a recommendation from your hero Gates, you get your panties in a wad over it. It's not like Obama is breaking his own rule, because his rule contains the provision for a waiver and a process for approving it.

Will the US Regain Respect in World Opinion Again
Capt.Slog replied to Amazon's topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah, except for that whole prisoner transfer thing, right? As a skydiver, you should know that you have to take responsibility for your own fuck-ups.
