What do you do before learning to swoop?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
With ~40 jumps? Oh you mean this jumps thing in the profile isn't to document how many jumps you're doing per week? There are a lot of tandems and not that many fun jumpers and as soon as I'm finished packing I'm telling the manifest guy to find me a slot... A good day would be 5 jumps while most regulars only choose to do 2-3. -Michael -
I like this method. You go up and ask one of the older jumpers what he thinks about the wind. My DZ is so small that if it's too gusty or whatever the plane just doesn't go up. -Michael

I borrowed a snowboarding helmet from someone. It had some nice comfy cloth pieces for the ears and the owner had sewed in a nice little pocket for the ditter. -Michael

How does a newbie rigger get into the business?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in Gear and Rigging
Everyone who knows said grumpy old fuck didn't call him that they just said "you'd better do it exactly the way he says or else you'll never pass." If rob is an anal old fuck then we'll get along just fine because I'm an anal fuck who just hasn't gotten old yet. I also have the two local riggers who've probably both been rigging since I was in elementary school who've both encouraged me to take up this profession. The supervised repacks shouldn't be a problem... Ideally I'd like to learn square reserves plus rounds but one step at a time. I may take the course with old crusty and find I don't like it. pchapman - I think that is good advice because I was in fact concerned as one of the TM's was complaining about the reserve distribution and I was afraid that my first 50 reserves may come out a little lumpy. Nobody wants the newbie to pack if their rig isn't 100% comfortable. -Michael -
How does a newbie rigger get into the business?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in Gear and Rigging
I don't think there are any actual lofts around here. I wasn't really considering it as a fulltime position - just something to do part-time and satisfy my thirst for the fine technical details most people don't care about. It takes a long time to get the rigger "a" so I may as well get the basics figured out now. -Michael -
How does a newbie rigger get into the business?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in Gear and Rigging
Just about everyone I've talked to so far has "their rigger" much like the way people have "their doctor" or "their mechanic". How does a newbie rigger actually get into the business when everone seems to want the work done by a rigger with years of experience? Is it the sort of thing where in the big spring rush the newbies end up getting the overflow from the experienced riggers who are then too busy to do the reserve on time for the DZ's opening? -Michael -

TSA & traveling with rigs as carry on
hackish replied to rjackson's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I asked a customer who used to be a baggage screener for the local (Canadian) airline. He said the most important thing is to be friendly and non-confrontational. Basically if you're a prick then they'll be pricks. If you're concerned then try calling the airline before you fly. Get the info from them - this way if the baggage person says "you can't check that" you'll be able to tell them that you already spoke with Mr. X and he said it would be ok. -Michael -

However as any lawyer familiar with that area would tell you Labrador is part of the province of Newfoundland. The folk who are not from "the rock" itself don't sound quite as funny but I guess they're still Newfies - even if visitors to Labrador don't have to kiss a cod and take a shot of screech... -Michael -
What do you do before learning to swoop?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I never thought about swoop versus classic accuracy. Clearly the guy is a classic accuracy guy as I've seen his rig and it's a giant 7 cell that should say "Goodyear" on the side. I'd love to move somewhere that has an endless summer but the winter will give me an opportunity to save up for a rig and concentrate on other things. Yes they do call me the jump slut here. -Michael -
How do part-time riggers document currency?
hackish replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Gear and Rigging
My take on it is that duties performed even if the rigging certificate isn't required are still duties performed as a rigger. It's like a doctor applying a bandaid - they don't need to be a doctor to do so but there will be a higher standard applied to that. Similarly a rigger who packs a rig and fails to notice a critical defect could be held to a higher level of responsibility than a common packer who isn't a rigger. In the US do you really need to be a rigger to pack someone elses main? Here we just need a CoP to be signed off on packing. -Michael -
I had some trouble getting the original sabre in the 210 size to open fast enough. I read PD's packing instructions and they recommended rolling the cells (cameraman pack job) and leaving the centre nose cell on the outside without tucking it in. This made a fair difference on the consistency. So I suggest downloading their instructions and verifying that you're packing it as they say. -Michael

You could probably do a search in that state as any lawsuits would need to be filed and would then become public record. So you should see the statement of claim and any statements of defense (or whatever the American equivalent is called). -Michael -
In Canada the good samaratin act differs slightly by province. In general even health care professionals are covered provided they aren't rendering assistance in a hospital setting. The other thing that isn't covered is gross negligence. -Michael

There were some studies done considering the amount of force men and women were able to apply. This data was used to determine a more optimal position for the silver and I believe it was used in consideration of the amount of pull force necessary. The reference was to poynters was made earlier in the thread. -Michael

I think St. John Ambulance emergency first aid (or whatever your local variant is) is something that all DZ's should encourage their members to participate in. Here in Canada we're protected by the Good Samaritan act but in the US I do not believe there is any such protection. As a result I've heard some people choose not to get involved for fear of legal consequences. -Michael

The responses have been great. I've now got a few chapters in poynter to read. I always wondered how they arrived at choosing the 22lb limit anyway... So today we were rigging up an old school PC and after a short discussion on the size pilot chute that would be needed this came up... Got a few stares from the old timers and they were like "you're really taking this rigging thing seriously eh?" -Michael

How many jumps did you get in this weekend?
hackish replied to andm31's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Boo! A big fat 0. Weather wouldn't cooperate. We had fun rigging up a round. DZ is now officially closed and the airplane is going away tomorrow. On a brighter note I found out that MileHigh is still open so next weekend I'll have to get them a case of beer and jump there for my first time... -Michael -
Large DZ's open all the time or just weekends?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes we have tandems. Only 2 tandem rigs and 1-2 TM's. It is the first year for this DZ so they have a rented plane. Looking at buying one for next year. I can't say for sure about stinky shoes but I let a stinker fart out once and they told me next time they'd throw me out. :P -Michael -
Large DZ's open all the time or just weekends?
hackish replied to hackish's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Just curiosity here. My DZ is small and open weekends. Are the big US ones open during the day all week too? I tried to find hours on a few big websites like deland for example but nobody seems to say... -Michael -
When I asked my rigger what a psycho-pack was he looked me in the eye and said "it's how you shouldn't pack your chute". As for the described method of packing it's very similar to one way I was shown and yes it seems to work very well with those slippery zero-p canopies.l -Michael

If you black out, the AAD deploys your reserve and you end up in a tree pulling the cutaway will not do anything as the only way to cut a reserve away is with a knife. I've started carrying my cell phone when I jump. -Michael

I read the pull test procedure in the FAA manual and they specifically said no thread. So I did some searches on this site for 22lb pull test and a few other things. Found some discussion on how to perform the pull test but nothing on the contribution of the thread. You mean using supertack isn't a good idea??? :) Honestly guys, I may have a lot of questions but the ones that are asked here are ones I didn't find the answer to already. Thanks to the guy who PM'd me the sections in the poynter manual I'll read that. -Michael

Just a point of curiosity. In paragear I see they rate the safety tie used to seal a reserve at 4.75lbs. Does this mean that the standard method of sealing a reserve adds 9.5lbs of pull added to it in order to break the thread? Or is that the reason that 22 lbs was chosen to achieve a total of about 30 lbs when the thread is present? -Michael
