Jonathan Tagle - distance record video
Canuck replied to Kolla's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I go back to my Olympic long jumping analogy then - should they have to land on their feet for their scores to count? How about the high jumpers and pole vaulters? It's about distance, not style. Style counts in the freestyle competition - where points are awarded for stand-up landings. Canuck -
Not the ext version.... Canuck

Yup, I've noticed some people prefer to take the hit more on the side of the hip/thigh instead of square on the ass. Canuck -

The crash landing has more to do with trying to wean every last bit of distance (think of how Olympic long jumpers land) out of the run, and the fact that when you're wearing 45 pounds of lead, it's a lot easier on the ankles to land on your ass! Canuck -
Jonathan Tagle - distance record video

Totally on purpose. I spoke with Jay about it at the Canadian Nationals, and the basic analogy he used was a long range rifle shot - you get more distance by increasing the angle of trajectory. If you watch video from any recent (say in the last couple years) pro swoop event, you will see that all the competitors, not just Jay, are doing it. Canuck -
The Vortex II is TSO C23 (d) rated, so I'm not sure why you would need a loophole... Canuck

Pack it in there and see for yourself. I suspect the rig will be a little squishy, but it will hande it better than would a rig with the closing loop attached to the bottom flap - at least you will be able to keep good tension on the pin. Canuck

For sure this happens, but just to put a spin on it: Most people buy what they buy exactly because they think it's the best (or best suited to them). For example, I thought that the Velocity was the best canopy before I owned one - that's why I bought one. I thought that the Wings was the best container before I owned one - that's why I bought one. For those people getting ugly reserve pack jobs - don't pay for that shit! Get the rigger to re-do it, or find another more competent rigger. Canuck

Not true really. Carbon fibre has very little flex or give to it which means when it's stressed it's actually more likely to crack than fiberglass. Flat Top Pros are cool - I use to have one, then I realized that it was WAY more helmet than I needed. Unless you have three cameras, or 2 cameras and a flash mounted on it, it's a total waste of space and an excessive amount of bulk and weight to be packing around on your head. Canuck

Thanks everyone for the responses. That sucks... Canuck

So, my freefly team won the Canadian Nationals which means we're off to Germany next year. Looking at the rules on the FAI website, I need a camera "capeable of providing a PAL digital signal by means of firewire." Does anybody with international competition experience know if that means I must actually have a PAL camera, or is there somehow I can get away with my NTSC pc109? No speculation please...just people who know for sure. Canuck

Wrong, they are - that's why a pilot chute comes with a container when you buy new. Pilot chutes are sized according to the size of container based on the size of the main which would properly fit that container. Make sense? Canuck

You generally cannot buy skydiving gear wholesale. Dealers usually pass on some portion of their discount, for example, it is pretty common for dealers to save you 20-25% off the suggested retail price of canopies and containers. Some small time dealers who aren't in it to make money will pass on their full dealer discount which can be up to 50% on some products. Canuck

"Optimal" is so subjective. To come up with an optimal wingload, you would need to know both what the pilot is wanting in terms of flight characteristics, and how the canopy is being flown. I really liked the way my Crossfire 119 flew in the 1.7 range. Canuck

No problem - especially for rotations. Off the top, turn left, turn right, flare, next. Canuck

First of all, you really shouldn't be complaining about getting 700-1000 jumps on a line set. Secondly, just because you break a single line doesn't mean you need to change out the entire set. To change one non-cascaded line should take about 5 minutes and cost about $10. Canuck

Well, I think you made a pretty silly choice. You said you were looking for a canopy with more bottom end lift - those 11 sq. ft. will pretty much negate any added lift that the cross braces provide. You would have done much better to get a canopy closer to the size of your CF2. As for mods - you can send it to Precision and have it basically turned into a Xaos 21. Good reports from people who have done so... Canuck

Look in the classified ads to see what similar rigs are being priced at. Ignore the ones from Baddog (seriously - Cruislites in Racers with round reserves are not worth $2600). Some riggers will have a pretty good idea what gear is worth, others will not. For better or worse, on-line sales have driven the price of used gear way down... Canuck

I used a couple plastic shims that came with my laminate flooring instalation kit and they worked great. They're only a quarter inch thick on the one side, but that was all I needed to line up the video a still at my optimum shooting range (about 4-6 ft). You can probably pick some up at any hardware store. Canuck

Yup, that's a tough one, and it's also one of the randoms in the current freefly draw. My team has been practicing it lots too, and we have just discovered that it is a lot easier if you first set up in an opposite facing totem and then pick up the grips - that way it's less of a reach. Canuck

When a good friend (also a French Canadian...) dropped a toggle on his Velo 96 last year and broke his pelvis in something like 8 places... Canuck -

Get your whole hand in there and lock down the toggle with your pinkie and ring finger when manipulating risers. Also, stitch up the bottom of the toggle opening so the closure is a nice snugg fit on your hand. I also personally think the skinny toggles stay in my hands easier - they just have better feel... Canuck -
On a Spectre eh? Fun hearing your neck crack isn't it... Canuck

Lemme get this straight. A riser strike took your entire helmet off? How!!!??? I have an FF2, and I'm pretty sure my head would come off my neck before the helmet came off my head... Canuck

What WLing did you start swooping at?
Canuck replied to superstu's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Less than 1 to 1 under my ol' trusty Maverick. With a strong double front riser approach (and once I put a collapsable PC on it) I could actually make that puppy climb! I really learned how to swoop under a Blade Runner 150 though, loaded about 1.3. Canuck
