Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)
DocPop replied to catfishhunter's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If we take that view then even separating HP landings won't work as long as we let students go whereever they want and make them blameless. If the student was in the wrong area then something went wrong and needs addressing, not ignoring. Maybe the student didn't know about an out-of-bounds area, in which case the instruction had failed. Maybe the student couldn't fly his canopy well enough to avoid the OOB area - in which case maybe he should have still been on the radio. Maybe he just didn't give a crap - in which case he should have been on the ground. In any case, "students happen" is not good enough. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -

Yes, we spoke about it. No, he didn't see the student prior. And the student never saw him. His initial response was "WTF is was that guy doing way over there." Not everyone has nearly 10K jumps. Not everyone has the presence of mind and quick actions that this very experienced, military MFF instructor has. And not every dropzone has the kind of outs that we do. As it was...it was way too close for comfort. Proof-positive that luck plays a big role in our sport at times. Did anyone speak to the student about being in the wrong place? No worries - just thought I'd let you know. I just posted yesterday about my experiences with the same thing on an elliptical loaded at 1.5. Even then it's not the end of the world - just a bit of a nuisance. I'll take a soft opening and end cell closure over a slammer any day! "The ground does not care who you are. First, your WL is not 1.444. It is 0.75 if 180 is your exit weight or 0.88 if YOU weigh 180lbs and we allow 30lbs for gear, clothes etc Second, You may be more prone to end cell closure from a HnP if you are opening at sub-terminal speeds. Third, you did the right thing to deal with the issue. Well done. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

This. And if you'll notice the camera never sees the green canopy the whole time (I saw him though). Also, after landing I had enough time to get the toggles out of my hands and shut off the camera before the guy I cut off landed. Again, it's more of a "don't do it because this isn't the behavior that should happen in the pattern. Vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqnRxGKy1RA So was it the fact that you did a 270 into the main landing area that the S&TA objected to? "The ground does not care who you are. @CSpenceFLY Thanks - it is not more than a mild annoyance. I can certainly deal with it without too much of an issue. @AggieDave Thank you for this reply (and for not beating the other dead horse). It does open REALLY soft despite my using a totally unmodified PROpack with nothing rolled or stuffed! I will probably not get anyone else to pack it as I like my packjobs! I will definitely check the linetrim next time it's out of the bag. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

I have about 80 jumps on my Katana 135 @ 1.5 and until the last 10 or so jumps (ie. this season) I have have no problems with the opening except the occasional off-heading one. In the last 10 or so I have consistently had end-cell closure of the left 2 cells causing an annoying but not unmanageable turn (I never jump big ways, rarely more than a 4-way). Things that have crossed my mind include: - packing technique - I always pack for myself and have not made any major changes recently - body position - again, I have tried to be consistent with what I always did. - line trim - it has an HMA lineset so I don't think it should be out of trim. Any thoughts from the more experienced guys out there? Thanks. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

So despite what some have said, this is not a new problem "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

None. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
Well that's sort of the point, isn't it? If you have a plan, and you know what to expect then you can tell when you're not "on" for that plan and then you have to decide whether to proceed with a HP turn or just fly a regular pattern. IMO a swoop is a privilege for having everything go as planned not a right on every jump. Exactly. Complacency kills. I was doing high-pulls on all these jumps and landing in the further of two LZs - everyone else was planning on the near one. On two of my jumps I reached my setup point too low and on one a tandem had decided to land in my designated LZ for some reason. Result = no HP turns. "The ground does not care who you are. anybody got word about a new icarus canopy!?
DocPop replied to virgin-burner's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
those are his starting altitudes, not his distances Now THAT'S some funny shit! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
Thanks for posting. I aborted 3 of 3 swoops on Friday because my setup was off (I was not having a good pattern flying day!). I know if I had carried out any of those I would have got "talked to" as well! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Letter from the Head of the FAA (May Parachutist)

Some of this work has been done for us in the UK: www.bpa.org.uk/safetydocs/canopyhandling.pdf Would could attach WL limits on the different CH and CP levels, for example: CH1 holders.....WL not greater than 1.0 CH2 holders.....WL not greater than 1.2 CP1 holders.....WL not greater than 1.5 CP2 holders.....WL not limited The above numbers are obviously up for debate, but I wanted to give an example. Thanks DSE. It sounds like they were talking to you for "best practices", at least in wingsuiting. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -

@diablopilot & stratostar You are both talking in general terms about the current climate with the FAA. DSE implied that he knew more about what happened at this specific meeting/visit - that's what I wanted to know. If you can point me towards some online minutes of the meeting or suchlike that would be fine too. I searched online but could not find anything (I am not au fait with the inner workings of the FAA) "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
I spoke to Gail at VSE and she was talking about this "party bag" which is $100 to buy separate from the rig. It looks pretty good (she sent me some pics) but is not on their website that I could find. I guess they have been working on it for a while but only just started talking about it. PS - thanks for pointing out your attempt at humor - I may have missed it otherwise! "The ground does not care who you are. A lot more than just canopy patterns... They are armed with information, they know the obvious problems, and the problems they are "addressing" go much deeper than just canopy patterns/control. So what was said? You are implying that you know a lot more than you're saying. Why are you keeping it to yourself? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA -
Actually peripheral is all around the edge of the visual field, including side to sit and up and down. Dictionary.com: "of, relating to, or being the outer part of the visual field " "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

He's not American, he declared war on us, killed our people, and it's war, he's a foreign terrorist, not an American citizen with rights under our constitution. I am talking about human rights. Are you saying that the constitution is right, but only for Americans? That's a pretty divisive statement. If you believe that Americans should be treated one way, why should other humans not deserve the same? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

Not even an option for take him to trial? As most of the respondents to this thread are American, what happened to "...justice for all" and "innocent until proven guilty". Or is there a line where you don't get human rights? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA

I could use small bands and single wrap all the stows. However, with this I find that all the stows are loose except those above the cascades (I have 500lb HMA lines). I want them all to be equally loose except the locking stows. I have not noticed any effect of the stows on opening shock, but a pronounced effect on opening characteristics such as off heading openings. I believe this to be due to the bag bouncing around when too-tight stows are undoing as the bag goes to linestretch. I think the bag does have a significant role to play in staging the opening in that it keeps everything together until linestretch after which the slider can do its job. Bottom skin inflation (as opposed to inflation of the cells through the nose and crossports) could really get your attnetion. This is all my own theory though. "The ground does not care who you are. We discussed using an SOS emergency system. Any thoughts/experience on that? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
