  1. We use these gismos, in case a paraffin budgie ditches in the sea. http://www.mcmurdo.co.uk/?Menu=17&Page=/Contents/ListProducts.asp&ID=1029 Not exactly a hidden transmitter, but its not far from one. Of course, once kidnappers know that their victims are likley to be using similar devices, they will look for them, also, this one has to be activated (water immersion) so a different means of alerting would be rescuers would need to be devised, I'd envisage an alarm accept function type of thing. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. "I'm not even going down this well trod road about how almost all world leaders including US Democrats voted to go to war based on the same itel Bush had." Ach, now you see, we differ in opinion on "almost all world leaders". Putin, Chirac, and Schroeder certainly were opposed, don't you recall the coalition NOT getting security council 'approval' for the invasion? How popular was the war with the Spanish people? If it had gone to the vote in my country, Blair would not have been there either. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. Okay the scenario is reasonable, but I reckon we might see an increase in activity in other regions, not necessarily Saudi. Khazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Chechnya, and maybe even Turkey. Pipelines being the targets as they are easier to hit, as opposed to the oilwells themselves. Khazakhstan probably has more oil right now than Saudi Arabia, research 'Kashagan' which is a project I worked on recently, (look up Tengiz and Karachaganak also). The Khazak govt has a pretty poor reputation for corruption, and we all know where that leads.... Africa might go off large too, trouble in Nigeria, and the Congo right now, not to mention Sudan, which is already in a mess. Lots of trouble brewing in the far east also, large Muslim pop in places like Myanmar, Indonesia etc, along with oil prospects. I really have to go, maybe pick this up again next week. 4. "So you think we should have waited until they actually "did" a terrorist attack instead of stopping it in the planning stage by pre-emptive action?" No, I think life would have been simpler for us all if Bush could have produced something substantial to justify invading another country. He told us the reason for invading was over the WMD issue. If he had substantial evidence for that, I wouldn't be discussing this with you. If the reason for invading was because Saddam was supporting terrorism, and Bush could demonstrate it, and could use it as justification... Again, you and I would probably be discussing RSLs, rig colour schemes, or favourite beers. Actually, given the timing of the invasion, and the global support for the war on terror, this would probably have been a better way of legitimising his invasion plans. But it is generally frowned upon (by the international community) to cause an awful lot of civilian casualties based on suspicion, hearsay, forged evidence, bad intelligence, personal vendetta, whatever. If you are prepared to support such a course of action, expect a little criticism until you can formally justify your actions. From the moment Bush took power, it appears he wanted to invade Iraq, regardless of justification. At least, thats the impression I got from the recent enquiry. When you want to believe something bad enough, all sorts of ropey evidence, and hair brained justification becomes realistic. This is well known by Chalabi et al. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. Blame the Dutch Cora, they invented them. For what its worth, the best urinal I have ever seen was in a nightclub in Aberdeen, they have TV screens with unpopular characters behind some perspex that you can use to aim at. The loop playing when I was in was a guy called Jimmy Hill, who is a reviled (in Scotland) sports commentator. Certainly helps with the aim. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. Okay then, keeping it civil and all that, what substance do you have for this suspicion? Refering to your gloomy forecast for the Saudis, that is, not my sense of humour. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. ""The reason I keep insisting that there was a relationship between Iraq and Saddam and al-Qaeda is because there was a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda."
  9. You might be right there Rem. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  10. "I think you better think about the fact that the govt of Saudi Arabia will most likely fall sometime in the next year IMO." Fact, fact? Is this one of those 'probable facts' that Remi was telling me about recently? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. "Ooooooh this will piss off left-wingers! " Nah, not really, "Mr Putin said he had no information the Iraqi ex-leader was behind any attacks. .......... But we did not have information that they were involved in any terrorist acts whatsoever and, after all, these are two different things........ "But he said it did not change Russia's opposition to the war in Iraq. " It doesn't change my opposition either. From the usual source.... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3819057.stm Planning is one thing, doing is another, when did Bush start planning to invade Iraq? Someone remind me please...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. The book is great, and not too thick either! What a situation to find yourself in, chop the rope to kill your pal, and try to save your own life..... Not sure how I might deal with that trauma. I'm looking forward to the film.
  13. "Would this be a declaration of war on the host country? Would the USA accept France downing an American airliner?" Not necessarily war, but a huge diplomatic incident. The Russians shot down Korean KAL 007 (Anchorage to Seoul) in 1983. No war. The USS Vincennes brought down an Iranian A300 Airbus flight 655, in July 1988 again, no war, but very delicate. I doubt if the USA ould be overly chuffed if France brought down an airliner, or vice versa. I guess a lot would depend on the circumstances, and the diplomatic relationships at the time. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 15. Only a matter of time before the King, The Clown and the Colonel adopt this.... "Would you like to large, super, or bytchisize that burger and fries?" Of course the Bytchisize version offers great value for money, satisfies one's desires, is incredibly popular, is very tasty, is not for the faint hearted, and available soon at an outlet near you. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. "Hey presto, no more running over kids on your 200mile 70mph chase. " 70 mph aint high speed in my book, my 2.5TDi will go a wee bit faster than that. Although granted, with less well endowed diesels, the only way to get them up to 'high speed' is to drop them down a mine shaft. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. Roundabouts are pretty easy once you get the hang of them, but terrifying for the uninitiated. Give way to everything on/from your right, and you might just get out of one alive.. Another big change in driving over here, apart from the obvious crazy wrong side of the road stuff, is overtaking on the inside (left side) is generally frowned upon. Our right hand turns are similar to your left hand turns, in terms of keeping your head on a swivel, for potential hazards. There's no sneak thru similar to your left hand turns at intersections. We could definitely learn from you guys on that one! Ooooh, and there's a fair chance you will have to deal with an extra pedal and a manual transmision. http://www.eastmead.com/driving_uk.htm is an online inroduction to driving on our misty isle. Its got better pictures than I have words for negotiating roundabouts. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 25. "Now, cut off the ends. You have a piece of string with no ends. A string with no ends is infinitely long. Wasn't that simple?" Take a strip of paper, say about 6inches long, by 1 inch wide, put a half twist in it, and tape the ends together. Now you have a single sided piece of paper with only one edge and no thickness! If you take the strings talked about above and thread a whole pile of mobius loops onto them, you have the makings of a lot of confused people. Mobius bottles are pretty cool too. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
