In anticipation of this very scenario, I asked the smart people here about the status of contractors... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1111239#1111239 A while back. Hope the answers help the discussion. By the way, you'll like it at San Marcos, really good people out there.

I'm pretty sure there is a CAA ruling that objects may not be dropped from any civilian planes, regardless of the area underneath. I think the BPA interpret skyballs as being in this category, IE they are not attached to a parachute, drogue, or similar decelerating system. A case might be made for the ones that open at a preset altitude and dump their lead, I just don't know if anyone has made such a proposal. "Gotta love that British red tape shit!" Yup. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. There is another way of thinking about this, have you considered a removable drive bay? Pretty cheap, and dead easy to install. Pull the drive when you are not using the pooter. Of course its not much use if you want to secure the PC whilst its running. http://www.mycableshop.com/3rd_Level/Drawers_IDE.htm for example. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I came across this site recently, its a little out of date, but it is useful for this sort of discussion.... "Why are we still the Saudis' bitch because of their oil, when we could be burning domestically producable/renewable ethanol???" Tax the shit out of gasoline, provide tax incentives for the likes of bio diesel, ethanol, LPG, hydrogen fuel cells, electric powered service vehicles, alternative energy sources for electricity, improve public transport, etc. Apply punitive import duty on foreign crude in order to stimulate the development of your local oil resources, (deep water gulf of Mexico, and the northern regions) this might get you guys past the gap in supply short term. Otherwise, there is no incentive to change, and there is very little incentive to develop the technology, distribution infrastructure, and the mindset of the consumers. Ah, but Dubbya has vowed not to change the status quo regarding fuel tax and consumption, so I guess you'll just have to continue taking it up the ass from the oil suppliers. And that means propping up the house of cards that is the middle east. Sucks to be you, huh? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "If you moved to the US would you own a firearm? Why?" Okay, I spent a little time living in Texas, I didn't own a firearm because I never felt at serious risk. I felt more insecure on the roads than at home, crazy assed wrong side of the road drivers...... If I lived in a community where I thought that the risk to my personal safety was outweighed by the risk of my son (toddler) being injured by that same firearm, I would abstain. If I felt that owning the gun was, to my particular circumstances, risk beneficial, I would acquire the weapon, and the skills required to safely and responsibly operate it. But I'd probably procure a Harley way before a sidearm, or re-assess my circumstances and move. Nice pics, I'll have a Glock 36 DD please Mike. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Is shooting down a civilian plane legitimate?
nacmacfeegle replied to nigel99's topic in Speakers Corner
"it would be the first time a military intentionally shot down a civilian plane, right? (I know there was KAL 007 years ago, but that was not supposedly intentional). " Jeffrey, google for USS Vincennes, as I mentioned it up the thread, or go here for some details about this debacle. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/5260/vince.html The Iranian Airbus was shot down, with the loss of 290 lives, it was dismissed at the time as a 'wartime' accident. Mistaken identity, so we'll not class it in the same league as actually deliberately firing on civilians. Makes you think though......... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Print Screen will usually not work with played back video of any kind because it is using overlays that are not captureable." Dammit, your right, I just tried this on my XP machine at work and all I get is a black screen in the grabbed media player window, even though an image is pasted into the Photo software we have here (MS Photo Editor...crappy). It works fine on my machine at home, but it has specific dedicated video hardware cards fitted (DC30+ and a DV300) and it works fine. Must be something to do with my home hardware. "what does that have to do with what we're talking about?" Darfur is all about Arab (Janjaweed) militia killing their locals, on a really ugly scale, with (Sudanese) government support and funding. It highlights your point in that nobody really listens, seems to care, or even shouts about it. "So where did you get THOSE numbers?" At the front page of the site you linked to,

Russia warned USA of Terror attacks from Iraq post 9/11.
nacmacfeegle replied to storm1977's topic in Speakers Corner
"Clinton said he would not have undertaken the war until after U.N. chief weapons inspector Hans Blix "finished his job." This is my point, almost exactly.>>>> Yep, like I said, bad analogy. "I know thats a poplular belief, but I reject it I think as more information about the events leading up to the Iraqi war come out, that this will become more anecdotal than factual." Soon would be good, we can put all this to bed, and get back to RSLs etc. -

"I would say that just about sums it up fairly." Phew, no hard feelings then, its too early in the week to be falling out over words. "If I were in Washington D.C. where guns are illegal and needed to use one to protect my life, I would do so and then deal with the consequences of its' legality later. " I'm not sure thats a good analogy for this case. For example... Would you 'load up on guns and bring your friends' on a roadtrip to Washington specifically to root out and kill would be muggers, or potential burglars, without the support from the legitimate law enforcement agency? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Homing Devivces for Civilian Contractors in the Middle East

Bear in mind you still have to activate the gismo, before its detected by the abductor, so maybe not immediately useable in this form. And agreed on the LOS issue, these are designed for maritime rescue, in an area where the survivors are likely to pretty close to the aircraft's EPIRB. But its close to being useful in the other arena. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "We were talking about the justifications for going to war." Yes, we were. As I recall, the justification for going to war was not over who believed SH had WMDs, it was over his breach of a UN resolution. Agreed so far? However Bush and Blair decided to go to war over this breach without the UN security council's agreement. Agreed so far? Thats a lynch mob mentality, and this is where we disagree. You think its okay to take the enforcement of international law into your own hands, I don't. I reckon that is basically where we differ over this issue. edited to add the bits in -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Salmon Pak was one of the training sites I believe." Salman Pak, aka Al Salman has been... A tropposcatter site (some sort of radar?), it was hit several times during Gulf 1. A chem/bio weapons site. A terror training camp. The presence of a jet fuselage was probably good enough evidence to suggest some training was conducted there, mind you, there's a big runway there as well. Who was being trained there and what for should be the big question. The suggestion that it was a training camp for AQ followers apparently comes from sources supplied by Chalabi (that guy again). "They state that SH seems not to have been involved in the 9/11 attacks." I'd go with that. IE he was up to something, probably no good. Scott Ritter..."The facility at Salman Pak does exist; its use as an Al Qaeda training camp is unsubstantiated." Scott Ritter is former chief of the Concealment Investigations Unit for the UN Special Commission on Iraq. "This media coverage serves policy figures gunning for a wider war. It generates a frenzy of speculation concerning Iraq in the public arena, which accepts at face value this information despite the fact that almost none of what Chalabi has purveyed to the media about Iraq has turned out to be accurate. There is a substantial lack of clarity and credible sources on the actual nature of the Iraqi threat to the US. A wider debate on US policy toward Iraq is imperative, especially in light of the increasing war talk out of Washington. Rather than relying on information from dubious sources, let's put all the facts on the table. The conclusions drawn from such a debate could pull us back from the brink of an unnecessary and costly war." from jan last year. >Edit I'll be right back Kev and G-master, I was distracted researching some stuff re the training camp thingie< -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "So, with all the care that the US troops are taking, where's all the rage and complaints from the US and Muslim world about the arabs killing arabs? I've been bleating on about Darfur, in Western Sudan for a couple of months, but nobody seems to be interested. Okay different issue, Trent, but lets put things into perspective. Death toll in Iraq will probably settle out at around 20,000 (currently around 18,000), some scenarios for Sudan put the death toll around a million. Back to the chase, because everyone is more interested in Iraq, its difficult to pull out real numbers and attribute the party of the cause of death from the website linked to above. "What IS interesting is that insurgents are killing WAY more civilians and Iraqi police than the US is." I'd agree with you that there are more incidents of insurgency / terrorist action these days, probably grabbing more headlines. However I'd wager the numbers of deaths by insurgents/terrorists are, in total to date, less than the deaths caused by (legitimate?)military strikes. There were about 7,500 civilian deaths up to the cessation of major combat activities, thats about 3/4 of the current total civilian deaths, which is way short of 'way more'. If, however we put aside the collateral damage of the major hostility period of the war (IMO this number was pretty low, reflecting the professionalism of the coalition, but still too many for an unnecessary invasion > different discussion entirely), the responsibility for protecting the civilian population of an occupied country rests with the occupying force, regardless of who is actually killing the civilians. The sooner power is handed over to the interim govt, the better. The malcontents, of course will try and demonstrate this to be a huge failure, and will more than likely step up killings in the next ten days or so. Lastly.. "As far as that video shows, you should not try to get off an RPG shot from the middle of a wide open street. " No argument on that front from me. Neither will I argue that this guy shouldn't have been stopped in the way that he was. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. If you have something like Premiere or Ulead's media studio, you can (copyright permitting) snag the whole file then find the frame you want and export. NB I've never tried this from a DVD, so I might be talking out of a hole in my head ('not for the first time' I hear you mutter) In windoze, if you are playing the DVD on your pooter's monitor, you can screen grab by pressing CTRL and ALT and Print Screen (print screen is normally on the right of the F keys), this will dump the screen image of the active window into the clipboard, which can then be pasted into just about any image editor or viewer, then crop out any unwanted stuff, and save the file as a JPEG for posting. Some free software out there if you want to Google for 'Screen Grab Free Download', if you like software or a little more flexibility for this sort of thing.
