  1. Hey Brian..LOL, are you trying to troll the NAs? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  2. "You-uns is found in western Pennsylvania and in the Appalachians and probably reflects the Scotch-Irish roots of many European settlers to these regions." As an honourary Texan (probationary, awaiting promotion to large truck owner status..) I feel I have to correct you here Chris. Scotch is what you drink (if you have any taste at all for whisky, NB not to be confused with whiskey, or worse, bourbon) Scottish is the correct description for our ubiquitous race..... 3. IAM, about 2/3rds of the users here are from the other side of the pond, hence this understandably dominated by US based classifieds. I can't see HH giving us Brits a separate classified section all to ourselves, he would then need to give the Finns, the Slovenians, the Aussies, the Afrikaaners and everyone else their own section. I just don't believe there is the real demand for that level of segregation. By all means use the classifieds here if you wish, but you may have more luck at the uk rec dot site. [url]http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=uk.rec.skydiving[url] Sorry man....this is the second idea I have poo-pooed today....I'm getting way too serious in my old age.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, one pissed off customer could create some seriously bad vibes. Bad experiences could be posted without the retailers side of the story creating a false assessment. I think it might be better to post good/bad experiences in the likes of talkback or gear and rigging..... Its also really easy for say an employee, or interested party...eg Skybytch, KateCooper,or Shotgun (Square1)...Or Trent, Gemini, (fly vertical.com) to provide a slightly biased review. You wouldn't want Jeangenie to write a review of Bonehead products would you? Cobaltdan has an equally hard time when ever he recommends Atair products...if you see what I mean. Not that I'm saying any of these fine people would (or even need to) stoop to such dishonest, underhand, even despicable marketing ploys. For the record I have procured skydiving accessories from both these fine retailers, and have absolutely no complaints whatsoever about their service. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Pffft, yet another milestone passed and still no sign of the monster geeerafff braai, swimming pool full of beer, type of thing..... "Re: Beer from Sangiro? [In reply to] Quote | Reply -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have pre-ordered two beer tankers for when we hit 100,000.... There will be a small cocktail reception at my house after which we'll use the beer to marinade a giraffe in my neighbors' empty pool, haul it's ass over the coals and promptly proceed to drown ourselves in the hops. Please bring a life-jacket and your own marshmallows. Safe swoops Sangiro" Just joking HH, with over 10,000 party guests your gonna need more than two beer tankers... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. "....Aye, fight and you may die, run and you'll live....at least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies...that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom! Video Help

Premiere, as Clay says will do, or media cleaner, will do the job. You can download a lite version of premiere from www.adobe.com if you don't want to part with the cash. Or you can try and persude someone to send you an 'evaluation copy'. If you have problems, post queries on the camera forum, there's lots of peeps over there who know how to compress, / recompress video to various formats. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. "I'll go for an argument that says anhedral is a performance advantage, but not one that says it is to contribute any useful spreading force. " Not arguing here, but I'll go with the explanation from a guy who actually builds flexible wings (for landing only, as opposed to fixed wings designed for take off as well)....Mr Preston (Cobaltdan)and his text above.... My original suggestion was that the anhedral (my bad in the original post) design of the canopy was to minimise unbalanced forces. IE by aligning the suspension and lift angles, the spanwise compression of the canopy could be managed. Without this alignment of forces, the only thing to prevent this spanwise collapse would be cell pressurisation. The cell pressurisation is at a minimum when you need a stable canopy the most, ie at low speeds on landing (when the forward motion of the canopy is at a minimum). Ignoring air locked canopies of course... I was looking a it from a purely static point of view (very simplistic), if you draw up a vector diagram of the forces described within the referenced document, and the discussion here, I'm sure you'll see what I mean. If the spanwise compressive force caused by out of alignment suspension and lift forces equals or exceeds the cell pressurisation force, the canopy would become structurally unstable, and 'concertina' at low air speed, or when flying through turbulence. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. Ah Gus, its not my diagram, that document was written by someone far more versed in the science of aerodynamics than I. Credit where credit is due and all that, it was Mr Sobieski's work. You more or less have the idea though.
  10. "Cool Hand Luke" Especially the opening scene where Luke is 'felling' parking meters wit a pipe cutter......I ALWAYS wanted to do that......Without getting caught of course. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. If production quality and filming is your bag, there's some nice Base on Crosswind by Patrick Passe. Some nice skydiving too.... The chronicles series also have various base footage on them too. These are (in terms of bucks per base) expensive if its just the base you are interested in. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. "What other sport is a World Champion going to be living in a trailer on a DZ? " Aye Ron your right, but there is an upside, how many other sports can you sit around and discuss things with world champions over a few beers. eg, I can't imagine sitting around after a formula 1 race talking about tyre selection with Michael Schumacher. Similarly I can't really imagine phoning up the MD of Ferrari to discuss engine types. Whereas we have the likes of Cobaltdan, Bill Booth, Jeangenie, etc available to us for advice here on the forums. And most manfuacturers will gladly field any queries for you on a similarly personal level. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. Dayumm, somebody go wake up Billvon, or at least take him off 'autorecharge'.... Okay I'm no aerodynamics specialist, but if the canopy were trimmed flat, the forces acting on the risers and suspension lines would cause the canopy to collapse in the centre. The lift must act more or less in a straight line from the under surface of the canopy to the suspension attachment. Hence the 'arc' design If the canopy were trimmed flat, the suspension lines would have to be attached to some sort of spreader bar of a similar dimension to the canopy span. This would make for a more efficient wing, in terms of lift, but exits would be awkward. If you notice serious swoopers almost always loosen their chest straps, this allows the canopy to spread/flatten more, giving a much more efficent wing by flattening the canopy. BTW most aircraft have a degree of angle to their wings, known as a dihedral (sp?). This angle may not always be obvious on the ground, but it is noticable when the aircraft is flying. I'm pretty sure Quade, Billvon, Prof Kallend etc will have more explanataions to add.....Probably better worded too. Editted to add..... http://www.afn.org/skydive/sta/highperf.pdf Page 40 shows the forces acting on the canopy that are pertinent here. You need acrobat reader (www.adobe.com), the whole document is exceptionally good reading for anyone desiring to understand their canopy better......Print it out, it looks better on paper than on screen. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 15. There should be no problem taking your rig carry on. As long as you:- Disarm the cypres and have the card handy, remove knives, bring it in a rig bag or similar, show up at check in in plenty of time, secure your reserve handle either with the chest strap (see recent article in the letters column of Parachutist) or a brightly coloured (obvious) pull up or similar. The rig bag is highly recommended, but only put your rig in it to keep it 'stowable'. If you get any odd questions, explain that is a very valuable piece of sports equipment. But most importantly be polite to the "underedumacated dipshit at airport screening". They may be dipshits, but they are powerful dipshits and can fairly spoil your day with very little effort. Theres a whole pile of talk about this here on the forums, do a search and check to see if I've missed anything. Nice tip Q, always good to have some insider information. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 17. "i probably won't ever leave the USA again since9/11 " In which case I would say that you have allowed yourself to be 'terrorised'. And that is sad, assuming you were willing and able to travel the world before 9/11. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "I'm going to disagree about the Monarch, sure its a great canopy, but why go with old technology that constantly opens hard when there is better stuff out there? " As a monarch owner, I can only reinforce Aggie's statement. When I was jumping my monarch, the limit on my jumping was not how fast I could pack, or money, it was the number openings I could subject my body to..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. Interesting discussion guys, Dave, can I give you a hypthetical scenario to consider? Say you are visiting 'no guns country' like say England, where there is an astonishing prevalence of crime. Would you feel comfortable without your sidearm? If so, are you making yourself a prisoner in your own country, because you can't take your weapon with you? Of course you would have much fun visiting your pals in Scotland, but thats beside the point... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. "As an additional note, my DVD1000 has input and output for firewire, S-Video, and composite." Ah yes however you and I both know that the card you mention is a 'high end' card'. Therefore probably not very common with run of the mill camera geeks. "Asking with a six-pack of Newcastle is a very polite way to get your microMV footage captured.
