G'day Squeakster from memeory, Coe-D parachutes are essentially copies or very similar in design to PD's series of mains, they are built by Pisa under license from PD apparently. Its all about looks and price, the pipe (note its not 2" pipe, you can't get your hand around a 2 " pipe) looks okay, but kinda ugly, the hackey (little leather ball) can be custom matched to your spiffy rig, but will cost ya bucks, zlottys, or quids. I guess you could put your finger thru the pipe, with ensuing dramatic consequences, but you'd have to be pretty dumb to do that.... A freefly handle is a shaped pad, very similar to a cutaway pad, which has a tongue, and is secured in a pocket adjacent to the BOC pouch, they are quite secure, and less likley to get caught/dragged out, etc. As my old pal Aggs intimates some freefly handles are more secure than others. A PUD (pullout) is a similar pad, but the pilot chute etc are located inside the rig, you used to need a D licence to jump them in the UK....Dunno about the regs now though... And its a different compression system than minidv, so if you mix footage from different cams in say a boogie tape, you will be rendering for ever before you even start. It will be inherently lower quality than Dv avi, but the on-board nonlinear elements look like they have interesting potential. The Sony one that I talked about above had simple on-board editing. The advantage of this type of compression system is that it can compress groups of pictures as well as individual frames / fields. So a greater compression ratio can be achieved with relatively small artefact (the blocky and blurred bits) effects. "640x480 refers to the screen" I would imagine those are the useable pixels, many compression systems 'like' mutiples of 16 (hence common sizes of 640 x 480, 320x240, etc) in their picture fields. There was a Sony minidvd cam a couple of years back, which I reckon never actually made it to Europe, this one sounds similar. The same firewire and edting issues will exist with this cam, ie you wonm't be able to firewire copy your friends' minidv footage, and vice versa.
