  2. In order to understand Texans you need to understand the Alamo. Approximately 187 settlers I will call Texans occupied the Alamo in 1836 when it was surrounded by 3K - 5K Mexican troops under General Santa Anna. The Texans repeatedly refused to surrender knowing that they would be executed. The Texans were hoping that Fannin's army would be able to reach them in time, not knowing that Fannin had been surrounded and executed after their surrender near Victoria & Goliad. The Texans in delaying Santa Anna's army enabled General Sam Houston to escape to the East where he was able to rebuild his forces and defeat Santa Anna at San Jacinto which is just South of Houston. 187 even though hoping for the best probably knew their eventual fate, managed to hold off far superior numbers for 13 days, and saved the Republic of Texas. The 187 were made up of white colonial settlers who had been invited to Texas, Mexicans, Tennessee adventurers, and at least two Blacks; and included both men and women. Blue skies, Jim

  13. We've had people lose helmets quite a few times. A Dequello team member was sitting on the floor by the door and zip .... out went his helmet when he set in on his lap. Another jumper lost her helmet in freefall. When she got down, she bout another Z-1. A short time later she lost it in freefall too, but thought she saw where it fell. Went to the field and while walking around couldn't find the second helmet, but found the first one! Go figure... Blue skies, Jim

  20. Never hesitate to ask someone their jump numbers if you think it is necessary. As has been pointed out, no one will mind and if their giving advice they really should know their stuff... I was once asked to organize a 4-way with two visitors, a husband and wife. I asked them how many jumps they had so I would have an idea of what to plan for the jump. The woman said "about 300." I looked at the husband and he said "Enough." I thought it was a little odd, but he did have a few manufacturer's patches on his black jumpsuit. Boy was I embarrassed when I found out later he had been with one of the national 4-way teams. Now whenever I see him, I ask "And what were your jump numbers again?" He just laughs about it.
  21. John, I am really glad you both were ok. As I mentioned to you that day, I had just picked up my main in the landing area and looked up at the on-coming jumpers (a good habit to have!) when I saw and heard the impact. I was almost as stunned as you were and couldn't believe you got out of that. Photograpner landed right next to me and said "Did you see that!" I was speechless because I had momentarily lost sight of you behind his canopy. Phew! What a relief to see you standing there. It sure woke us all up after that. The big way landing patterns were almost perfect on the later jumps.
  22. My first off DZ landing was also my second jump at Spaceland. Winds were a little higher than I had experienced in my then 25-30 jumps. I went downwind of the landing area and couldn't get back. Typical newbie story: "I think I can make it. I think I can make it. %$&@ I can't make it!" Waited to long to set up for an alternate site. Saw the barbed wire fence at the last moment with no deviation due to trees in front of me. Hard 90 left turn and struck the ground at the top of a canal berm on my right hip and chest. PLF?? Was immediately airborne again since I was now running crosswind to slightly downwind. Hit the ground the second time on my back and slid into an irrigation canal full of water. Started grabbing everything I could get a hold of since the canopy was pulling me off the bank and downstream. Chris Miller or Hook n Swoop popped up over the berm with "Hey dude, are you alright?" Since I couldn't cut the main away without releasing my hold on the weeds and vines, I responded " I'm gona' drown if you don't get me out of here!" as the water began to fill my Z-1. Later found out that the vines I had grabbed were poison ivy! Had to live with the nickname of Bayou Boy for quite a while. Blue skies, Jim
