What is the reasoning behind locking a thread vs deleting it?

No, according to Mamajumps you have to be male to be called that name. You would prefer Stupid Fuckee? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Advice for faster than normal landings
Baksteen replied to TerminatorSRT4's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Let's put that down to the difference between 1500 and 33 jumps, shall we? (Or 200 for that matter.) "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
The space shuttle. Or possibly, for the Ins-and-outs among us, Base humping (might be marginally NSFW for Americans). Yes I know it's a repost, but otherwise newbies might not get it. *whoosh* "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Advice for faster than normal landings
Baksteen replied to TerminatorSRT4's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am not that experienced either - I've only been around for two years - but I got the feeling that experienced skydivers don't PLF simply because it's not "cool". That push-up motion you refer to sounds suspiciously like a so-called face-plant. People try to run it out but go too fast and fall over. Definitely not cool and very probably painful, for the body or at least the ego. Butt slides I don't see so often (with non-swoopers). I myself have two, in both cases because I fucked up, realising too late I couldn't stand up the landing and I was already too low. Both landings were soft, but I was lucky. Side slides I myself have never seen, but my personal opinion is that when I'm going 10+mph I'd rather roll to distribute the energy of impact. Think sliding vs rolling across hidden stones or whatever. I'll start worrying about my reserve once I know for certain I'm still in one piece. -
I count too - but since I know I'm an idiot I also have an audible, just in case.. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Advice for faster than normal landings

If you're not sure you should stand it up, PLF is the most appropriate method of landing. Think about it - they don't teach students to side-slide in FJC right? -

:0:0 No jumps this weekend... I am not yet allowed to jump if there's no instructor on duty (C and D-licence only). Instead, I taught a student how to [unravel]* a parachute, which is one of the demands for obtaining the coveted A-licence. Pre-second I showed him how it was done, next I set him his true test. I merely gave the student a step-through, a risertwist and a lineover to solve, but halfway through their time it started to look as if I had a nice challenge waiting for me after the student ran out of time, as they had given themselves quite a few interesting knots. To my quiet amazement however, they actually managed to untie the knot all by themselves. They probably thought the test I'd given them wasn't challenging enough. Unfortunately, they went home before the beerlight came on so they didn't buy their beer. Kids today.. *disclaimer: I know unravel is in this context not the right word.. but for the life of me I cannot remember what that correct word would be.. Completely off-topic, but you shouldn't judge a (potential) student on what he's saying before he has actually gotten some decent exposure to the sport. He really just doesn't know any better than what he sees on TV. I mean, you gotta admit that Hollywood makes skydiving look easy.. That being said, he does kinda come across like an arrogant prick...or in other words: excellent skydiver material. This kind of post really pisses me off, m'kay? Not everyone knows the forum etiquette, such as it is. Young people do stupid stuff. As do older people, if you search for downsizing threads. Somewhere on this earth there are people whose life is not a fairy tale. Some of those people might want to skydive. Some of those people end up here and like most newbies they don't "do a search" but excitedly spill out their entire life story - only to be stamped mercilessly into the ground by the e-gods. Don't you think that the occasional new poster might actually be -gasp- genuine? Whatever happened to innocent until proven otherwise? I don't question the words of the creator - merely those of his followers..regardless of how said followers call the aforementioned creator. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
