  1. : 0 : multiple Couldn't make it to the DZ, what with the holidays. Perhaps tomorrow.... "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  3. I totally agree that in themselves jump numbers are inadequate to judge a person's experience within say, a given discipline. They DO provide a crude overall indication however, especially combined with an accurate licence (number). Regarding ie. downsizing there is no way in heck that a stiletto is appropriate for someone with five jumps, while it *might* be for someone with 500 jumps. By the way, that *might* is there because some "experienced" jumpers who regard parachutes merely as something to get down to earth alive and who barely know how to flare should probably stay on Manta's - even though they "meet the requirements" for a stiletto. 4. Quit hijacking you people! We're supposed to help poor VB with gettng the person of indeterminate gender home without his mother noticing. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  5. I thought reposts were frowned upon? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  6. Spence, I have, mainly the thread that was linked earlier in this one. I also tried searching, - but too much of what i found was along the lines of "fuck the bitch". It gets tiresome after a while
  7. I'm replying to the OP, but the following is applicable to several people. OK guys.. everyone take a deep breath. ... There. ... Now kiss and make up. Mamajumps, I have a lot of respect for the way you are able to put your kids in front of everything else. It's the way it should be. However, as others have said, an AAD is part of that, especially if you cannot afford the time to stay current. Perhaps you could just put a few dollars aside each month, so the total service costs won't hurt your wallet so much. Please try to resist the temptation to use strong language and generalised insults when venting - it probably will be counter productive. By the way, since others have said that the costs are significantly lower I'd be interested to know where you got that figure. So stay with it, don't let the grey crowd of anonymus people spoil the fun you have in the sport. Just keep asking questions and filter out the good stuff and ignore the trolls. Stupid questions don't exist, but stupid answers do - and "That's a stupid question" is a shining example of the latter. Just in case: Labrys, none of the above is directed at you. I'm sure you're an excellent coach. It's true about the search function though - a lot of the results are drivel or obsolete. Perhaps you could include a direct link to a good thread if you remember one that answers a given question perfectly. However, I sometimes have my doubts about the tone/delivery of your posts (and sometimes is the operative word there). Perhaps you should count to ten before replying to someone? But it should be noted the advice you give in itself is sound and usually supported by good arguments. edit: it's monday.. I can't type before I finish my coffee "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  8. I still don't get why she's having such a hard time on here. Dammit, she only had ten jumps! What kind of "accuracy" do people expect from such a student, especially after an incident like that? I know that a reserve should never be considered a "guaranteed open" of course, but it is easy to understand how a student would get that idea. As to cutting away a premature brake release - good job on her. Students of that experience level are/should not be encouraged to extensively evaluate a malfunction. Canopy choice and safety are not her primary responsibility. If at that number of jumps an instructor says to you that you can jump the canopy he's giving you, I can imagine that you don't question his wisdom. I mean, he's an instructor, right? He probably knows better than me. So riddle me this: Why is Shayna being slagged off, while you hear few people about this Rick character? HE's the one who got her into this situation, HE's the instructor whose poor judgement nearly got a student killed... 9. Seriously, can you imagine a more "Christmassy" sugary dsgustingly sweet yet patriotic bullshit story? -tough woman gets hurt in a spectacular way -while pregnant -husband serves in the military -overseas -surgery for free -right before the holidays. It's all propaganda my friend. OOh look - we stepped through the looking glass into Speakers Corner... 11. Skydivers? Of course. Never ask a skydiver what they're thinking - they might tell you. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  12. Well... like I said last year, I'm lucky to land on the right planet, let alone next to my skis. But once I've returned from landing off I guess I could do a grand slalom - if you don't mind me missing a few gates.. No, all jokes aside, I need to improve both skills before I dare to show myself in any kind of competition, let alone an international one. I'll not be the Eddy the Eagle of Paraski - yet. 13. Actually, nothing is more fun than strapping some retarded old fart to a windmill on a windy day... Round and round she goes and where she'll stop nobody knows "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  14. Oh shut up - my country has got its good things too. You know what, I'll post them as soon as I can think of some. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  15. Ere! we do got hills in the southern part - mann kan einige unsere gefaelle Berge nennen wann man die auf'm Fahhrrad.. aw shucks.. You'll call em mountains once you've cycled on some of them. 16. It is kind of a weird town, I agree.. You have to look really well to find a normal pub there. The Fire & Ice in Soelden was fun, though... Looking down from the second story to see several skankily scantily dressed women dancing on the bar, next to this guy who was dressed up as a pirate (arr, matey!) and who was throwing (clean) underwear into the crowd.. ..Me ordering a beer from a barmaid with huge.....eyes, who kept staring at me for nearly a minute, mouth hanging open, without taking the tenner out of my hand...me finally walking away with my drinks, wondering why all those girls are staring at me like that - have they never seen a guy before?...really getting uncomfortable as a guy elbows his girlfriend in the ribs to point me out...me looking down, embarrassed, only to realise that in this insanely crowded place I am wearing a T-shirt upon which the word 'skydive' is stencilled in huge letters.... Aber Bier und Frauen gibt es auch bei uns - Schnee nicht... My friends and me really DO go on skiing holidays to ski. So keine Schnee Hasen for me. Edited to italicise heathen foreign lingo. 17. Gimme a break, awrite? My GF has never ski'd before. 'Sides, what I like about Soelden is that they don't prepare a slope, but rather half a mountain. More than enough room to avoid those eejits who, like in skydiving, come tumbling down the hill in all positions except the correct one. 19. Those open too slow and don't land well. I like slow openings. Spectres land fine, provided the steering lines are set correctly and provided you finish your flare I would have bought a Spectre 190 had I not demoed a Storm 190. As I've said elsewhere, the Storm is NOT "the new" Spectre. All other factors being equal, the Storm is definitely a more challenging canopy than the Spectre. Both have their own characteristics, but which canopy suits you is something you have to find out for yourself. Under Dutch rules one would need 100 jumps for the Storm and 400 for a 135, so the only thing I have to say to the OP is that downsizing so you'd get faster openings is a REALLY bad idea. The flight characteristics of the canopy will change too, perhaps radically. Like others have said, change the type if you must, not the size. Perhaps you could look at canopies known for 'enthusiastic' openings, like the original Sabre. Be advised though - the only thing that canopy has in common with your current canopy is the name. Make sure you demo it (or any other canopy) before you buy.. 22. :0: I was too busy with the orchestra to be able to jump, so that my repack was due wasn't that much of a disaster. What with going to bed at 2 am and having to get up at 6 am for four days in a row I judged myself unable to fall out of an aircraft in a responsible manner. Thursday was a sort of trial-Christmas concert for a small audience, Friday was the general rehearsal and Saturday the real concert. It was sold-out(approx. 70 people)!, the FIRST time we should have rented a larger space. That choir we were working with must have a lot of fans....
