Good morning Chris - you're right..it IS scary if the two of us are starting to understand each other. I understood your post too, but was afraid to admit it "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

No offence, but you seem to hava a split personality.. Kind of unhinged, so to speak. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

All that's needed now is a small, hidden loudspeaker that emits a moaning sound and/or the rattling of chains every once in a while - say between midnight and 1 am... Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
Baksteen replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
I currently jump a Storm 190 at 1.2 What was your previous canopy? I used to jump a Spectre and I found that compared to that, a Storm of equal size has a lot more forward speed and loses more altitude, while turns are snappier. 1) Ask a friendly instructor to go over PLFs with you again and practice them under the instructor's supervision. Come in on all jumps expecting to PLF and DO SO even if you think afterwards that you totally could have stood that up. There's no shame in PLFing. Work your way back to trying to stand your landing up after you get your confidence back. DO NOT land on your butt! If you misjudge it, your spine will have to take the impact. 2) Somewhere upthread TheCaptain (?) recommended the 'two stage flare'. If you're going to try that, first find the exact toggle position (up high) that you actually start giving input to the canopy. With mine that's around neck level (I like this brake setting). What works for me (but for you it might be different) is to 'plane out' using only the slightest toggle input (shoulder level) and then gently finish the flare as far as my arms will go down. Again, do not do it this exact way! Find out together with the canopy coach what works for you and stick to that. He'll see you land, I don't 3) The canopy in the factory setup has a lot of flare power at the very bottom end of the flare. You mentioned your brake lines were shortened 4 inches. As Bolas recommended, try and see up high whether you can stall the canopy by 'simply flaring it'. I'm not a huge fan of taking steering line wraps, but that's a different discussion and not relevant for finding the flare point. Just make sure (up high) that you're not stalling the canopy while landing - you wouldnt be the first one. 4) You are going to take another canopy course. Good! In preparation, like Skybytch said, get video of your landings, so that your coach has something to work with. It'll help them tuning their advice to you. Afterwards, dedicate as many jumps (hop 'n pops) as necessary to dialling in the advice you got. Leave off polishing up your freefall skills for later. That's less things to think about on the ride up. Good luck; don't give up! :1:0 Just one jump - I had to stay out of the sun as much as possible because of the antibiotics I was taking. Got sunburned anyway because I wasn't paying enough attention so I had to break off the treatment. My doctor will call me back in two hours to give me an earful, I expect. Be that as it may, I'm very proud of my GF who made her jump on Saturday. She absolutely loved it! Well... my guess is that the guy is the BOSS... If that's the case, I'd tell him to go F himself and find another place to participate in the undefined activity. If everyone is walking away from him, they are already hurting him where it hurts - in his wallet. Out of lazyness I'm just replying to your last post, VB, but what happened on your DZ to piss so many folks off? EDIT: Never mind - I opened this thread off the top of the forums but made the connection after going into the bonfire proper. The Great AFF Experiment has been an Abject Failure . . .
Baksteen replied to NickDG's topic in Instructors
Just a few things that caught my attention. First and foremost, in reply to the OP: 1) Regardless of the training method they followed, the people who worry me are the ones who view their parachute as 'nothing more than a way to survive freefall'. I know a few of these people - they come from either training method. 2) Students sometimes feel as if they fall into a 'gap' once they progress to solo freefall jumps. They seem to find that they 'all of a sudden' expected to be self-supervising and have to start asking more questions if they want to progress. This happens with either method as well and is not unique to any dropzone. They can't expect that their I's will keep holding their hands forever, of course, but it's up to those same I's to slowly teach the student to become self reliant. Poorly worded, but I hope someone sees what I'm trying to say. Fixed it for ya. I hate terms like that. Way to make the student feel good about their performance and to improve the fun they have in skydiving. "I have 12 jumps and am still on the dope rope, while X is already doing 20 seconds... I suck - they don't call it a dope rope for nothing!" I really don't get the point. What are 'we' investing/getting back? Money? ----- So yes, there are problems with S/L. So yes, there are problems with AFF. What can we do about them? How can we increase the number of students coming o the DZ for a FJC? It was remarked that either progression has a lot of dropouts (please note I'm not counting the "skydiving is not for everyone" type of person here) How can we make sure these people keep coming back? 30? Damn ... you're still a kid ... O Don't make me go over there... What are you going to do? Wheeze at her? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I've been living at my current address for close to five years now, but as the ridiculous rents in Amsterdam forces me to take in two housemates, I've never considered the place to be 'home'. At club style DZ's it probably still IS that way. That is certainly the case at my DZ anyway. Everyone is a volunteer. Only TM's and their videots used to get a small commission, but we can't do tandems anymore. I'd never heard of skydivers getting tips until I came on here. Myself, I tipped exactly once; for an especially nice opening the one time I paid a packer. But where I jump, a soda or beer is much more appreciated than cash. Already a page and a half ago! I can't believe someone didn't make the obvious comment yet, you bunch of slackers! Here goes: Ahem. I hate it when people judge you based on the glass-half-empty/glass-half-full cliche, so I usually reply: "I don't know - what's in the glass?" "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Yeah....soft landings? How do you do it?
