  1. Would it make you feel better about it if these people had a reason? My point was that the poster to whom I was responding was already calling for the deportation of Muslims, without any Muslim group claiming responsibility nor any official word that this was an act of Islamic extremism. It was knee-jerk bigotry, and I was calling it out. And I'm annoyed I'm having to explain this, you're smart enough to not need that. Well I believe ISIS has claimed responsibility...therefore the proper Knee-Jerk reaction should be deportation of those that have expressed Radical views. Take the PC out of it and do what is in the best interest of the Nation. Man I'm telling you, the PC brainwashing in this crowd... If this is a typical week in America, by Friday of this week we will have lost more people to gun violence in the USA than were killed last week in France. Yet the same people who call out for a violent US response to ISIS are the ones who steadfastly oppose doing anything about gun violence at home. Well give your home town a month and they just might surpass ISIS Kill number. I suppose deportation somehow is a violent US response. I guess I judge a book by its cover, and currently the Islamic State is an ideology of DEATH. But I'm a believer of changing an evil man's heart and give them the opportunity to embrace LOVE for family and community...if that fails, put a bullet in their brain. That last option tends to stop any future evil they my otherwise wish to engage in. (responding to the thread) Deportation.... for god's sake... What's next? Concentration camps? The fucking Gestapo? Way to go! Just take it out on everyone who matches the stereotype and on whom you can get your hands, instead of just those who are actually guilty. "Islam" isn't doing this. "Muslims" aren't doing this. Terrorists are. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  2. Good One thing they do understand Kill one of ours and we will kill a hundred of yours! Pound them into the ground France. I can't see the video at work. However, Raqqa is a population centre so I think I can safely assume that "we" are not killing a hundred of "theirs".. probably just mostly hitting innocent civilians, thereby ironically fuelling any anti Western sympathies and quite possibly even fertilising the IS recruiting grounds. But at least "we" are Being Seen Doing Something... I'm not saying "we" should do NOTHING, it's just that I'm of the opinion that a well-placed sniper's bullet through the head of a few carefully selected specific individuals is so much cleaner and better than any type of cluster f... er, bombing. Cut the head off the snake.... "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  3. If it's been packed without opening/airing for four years - no I wouldn't; F1-11 or not. But a canopy is not a cutter, so I concede your point.
  4. Actually the service costs of the Cypress' 4-year checks came as quite a disappointment to me. I figured I had already paid for a fully functional AAD - so why the unit had to be shipped back to the company for mandatory testing (on my expenses) was quite beyond me. Of course I had a lot less experience back then. Currently, I like the MARS M2.. Perhaps in four years time when my Cypress II is put out to pasture I'll get me one of those. For one thing, it'll be better field tested then.
  5. Perhaps the stage in which the brakefire occurs is also of influence. I had one once on my (then) brand new Storm 190, loaded at approximately 1.1. I was spinning on my back pretty fast and already reaching for my cutaway when I looked up, expecting to see a huge ball of yarn. I was amazed to see a perfectly nice and open canopy "above" my head, so I countered the spin on my opposite rear riser and wondered what the hell was going on. Then the penny dropped, I released my brakes and flew straight once more. All this happened well above decision altitude. 6. An old cliche: "Don't spend the rest of your life trying to get stable". Once you initiate your EPs, just finish them. You can deal with line twists in your reserve... unless you're terminally focused on stuff like hanging on to some selfie-stick, obviously. selfie sticks are banned over here by the way. For non-camera props it depends on the common sense of the jumper, which (knowing jumpers) in some cases might possibly have to be beaten into said jumper by the instructor on duty. You're absolutely right that he spent way too much time trying to correct that line twist. I can't tell whether or not he should have been able to fix it without trying to hold on to the rifle, but the rifle certainly didn't help matters. I also agree that the rifle spent way too little time in freefall for comfort. 7. Fixed it for you. Now I'll happily sit back with my empty can of vitriol and stare into the flames... edit: layout "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  8. Perhaps that's just another difference between "British" and "American". Subways have underground trains; tubes have toothpaste. Subways have sandwiches, dummy. 9. You hear about an average guy who went to a party sometime. You deviously get the guy's number in a roundabout, technically not-quite-illegal way. You call him next day, either during office hours, at dinner time or very late in the evening. Despite the fact that he's suspicious and pissed off at you for disturbing him, you sweet talk him into believing he's handsome and that you are the pretty thing he's been talking to at the party and that you're great in bed. Then you sell him an ACME 'inflatable companion repair kit' and email his phone number to every other woman out there. That's telemarketing. 10. Generally, the sound is so loud that I've taken to wearing earplugs wehnever I see a movie in the theater. Takes care of the nacho-types in one go. I too prefer the comfort of my own home to the theater. I use Netflix. But (at least) one Dutch movie theater franchise (is that the correct term?) is experimenting with also renting out their films via Smart TV. might not be the very newest ones, but seems a good idea none the less. 11. In the Netherlands, an AAD is mandatory for tandems and for sport skydivers up to C-licence. Moreover, the AAD you pick must be approved for your skill level. For instance, the Mars M2 is relatively new and hence only approved for sport jumpers with a C-licence or higher. Exceptions: 1) foreign jumpers. They simply have to conform to their own regulations. 2) static-line rounds with a chest mounted reserve. 12. People are always lying to get laid. Sometimes they are kneeling to get laid. Or standing. Or even swimming or in freefall. I get the standing, swimming and freefalling. But is the kneeler the layer or the layee? And as to the lying who's most likely to be the liar and who the lyee? 14. I hate it when so-called experienced jumpers trot out that BS argument, about PD canopies 'actually being more like a size larger'. By the same reasoning you could say that Icarus/Aerodyne/etc. is 'more like a size smaller'. [rant] Next time anyone tells you something like that, just smile and nod politely and go to someone qualified, like a rigger (which I'm not). Yes, there are different ways of measuring canopies. but unless you're a particularly high-talented competition swooper, you should view a 189 as a 189 and a 176 as a 176. Differences in size become more pronounced as the canopies get smaller. For instance, the flight characteristics between a 97 and a 120 of the same type are much different than between a 240 and a 190 of that same type. Aside from that, there should be no problem with a 176 as a reserve vs a 189 main. Though it is not all about size; the main is designed to have fun with, the reserve to get you home safely. 15. Generally speaking, you have a point. No argument ther. However, if the barrel roll was initiated halfway to altitude, seat belts would've been disconnected already. 16. Well except for those who love to play the well worn body shaming game... jus sayin Yep.. "Just saying" - my point exactly "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  17. Like you say further down the thread, there is a lot more to it. Yet I'm replying to this comment because it's a direct answer to my post: If you'd be truly willing to invest all necessary research and effort in determining whether a 285 lbs person could skydive (with no pay or guarantees that he actually could or would be willing to continue) then I'm happily proven wrong. And for the record (in response to someone else), I don't care about people's jump numbers so much as their involvement in the sport. 18. I see a lot of people condemning others for saying they would turn this person away. What I don't see is these people stepping up and offering THEY'll do the research, invest the effort and modify the equipment that's needed... Funny how that works.
  19. I'd say no. We have a weight limit of 220 lbs, ~230 if the student is exceptionally fit. Our regular gear simply isn't TSO'd for an exit weight of over 300 lbs. Like TK said, suitable gear will be rare and perhaps even only marginally suitable. Besides, who is going to do all the necessary research into the quagmire of rules, TSOs, custom-fit harness, tensile strengths, possibly even custom made hardware etc? It's a hell of an investment to ask a volunteer to make in this single student, who may or may not decide to hang around the sport for more than even a few jumps. I freely admit to being unwilling to make this kind of commitment (in my spare time no less) - and I sure as hell wouldn't trust it solely to the student. 20. If you're in doubt, have an impartial rigger examine and value both canopies. They'll know what to look for.
