+3,300 jumps and I made a dumb ass mistake
Baksteen replied to mirage62's topic in Safety and Training
I'm struggling a litttle. Do you mean "flare with one riser and the free toggle"? If so, I wouldn't recommend that. Next time you're up high, seek the stall point when pulling down your rear risers. Compare that with the stall point of the toggles. Then try to 'flare' (still up high of course); first with your toggles, then with your risers and finally with one toggle and one rear riser. The differences in the necessary input between riser and toggle are huge. This goes for the distance you have to pull your arms down, the amount of force necessary AND for the abruptness of the input you require. Then factor in that your average jumper (including me) has little to no experience landing on rear risers in a best case scenario..... So, if it was me I'd just cut the damn thing away. OP, this is not directed at you specifically; just a general observation. -

Was that due to poor instruction due to the ongoing relationship, or was she just as bad at skydiving as that little Texas girl? Dunno. Primarily due to poor instruction. As I said before in another thread: Once you've discarded all the hating from people on here, it's actually possible to see the vid and read the story of a student who was rushed in over her head. She made student mistakes and a few poor descisions, including sleeping with her instructor. But. The guy proceeds to put Richardson under a way too small canopy, all the while assuring her that she can handle said canopy. When his regular DZ won't let her jump the canopy, he takes her to a different one. Of course Richardson listens to him over the DZO. What the hell does she know? She only got a few jumps (under his tutelage) and he's her boyfriend! Richardson has an accident, and it turns out, no insurance. So she seeks the media, telling everyone that it's her own fault, but she wants her own face back, so she asks for donations. As a result she got crucified on here, while nobody ever mentions the instructor douchebag who put her in that situation in the first place. I can rant on and on about this, but the short of it is that Richardson merely was a student who made student mistakes. In my opinion, her instructor-boyfriend is to blame for the accident and lucky he didn't get the crap sued out of him. I hope he can live with himself. Our students have 500+ sq. ft of canopy over their heads in a two out situation. Descent should be slow enough that a PLF should be all they need to land softly/safely. I don't know, but it seems to me that a lot might go wrong in the two-out situation. The student might flare the rear canopy of the biplane, or, gods forbid, just the outside toggles of both canopies in a side by side, thus creating a problem ot flare-altitude. So KISS, basically.

This, and: Do not flare. I'm not so sure about the leave the brakes on though..We simply tell them to steer with the dominant canopy, but under no circumstances are they to steer with outside toggles in a side by side (as in left turn = main, right turn = reserve). Booties are not training wheels. They are nothing more or less than a tool to get a specific job done. They allow you to make swifter, sharper turns (if you're used to them that is) when doing belly jumps. They also allow for an easier and faster tracking; hence the silly "training wheels"-comment I suppose. So yes, even for belly flyers it's a good idea to learn how to track without booties since they enhance what tracking skills you already have. If youre looking to get into any other discipline than belly, booties aren't the tool for you.
