  1. Not being funny but you arent qualified to decide if someone is cutout for the sport or not with sub 300 jumps. It needs to be an experienced instructor who makes that decision. And if I had the choice of landing in the top of a soft, TALL pine tree, or taking a downwinder, it would be a downwinder any day. Theres no guarantee you will stay in the top of a tree after landing, and if your canopy doesnt snag or tears, you will drop a massive height if its a tall tree and end up badly broken or dead. Therefore, a downwinder is much safer IMO
  2. Wow, those things sounds ground hungry So by 10 seconds earlier, what altitude are you estimating that he should have started digging out to save himself? Signed// Sabre2 for life
  3. I couldnt find anything on that website apart from some big engineering project info!
  4. For what its worth I think it was a well written and gracious article. Nice one Ian A great acheivement in getting to the last 6 in such a talent pool.
  5. I am guessing the poster meant that if he had let off the fronts 2 seconds earlier...even IF he had jammed the toggles down hard and fully, he would have still pounded in...but much harder still? Can some experienced canopy pilots comment on this footage? It looks like no matter what he did he was hitting the ground very hard... (eg. even if he had flared the toggles all the way)
  6. That looked nasty. What injuries did the guy have if you are able to say?
  7. As Labrys says, it sounds like you are talking about AAD fires here.... Have a read of this very informative Cypres document.(well, I thought it was useful anyway!) It explains a huge amount about how the Cypres operates and clears some myths up about its operation. http://www.cypres-usa.com/cyp13.htm If the Cypres cut the closing loop at the right altitude - around 850 ft iirc (ish) then it did its work. Problematic or slow reserve opening is nothing to do with Cypres... but at those altitudes it can clearly mean the end game..
  8. So does that mean on a new G3 that the its not possible to get a Skyhook? but instead you can add Mirages own system? Anyone know the tech info on this system and if its very similar in operation to the skyhook then isnt that a copied design? (Im thinking breach of patent...IF the skyhook is patented which I would hope it is...though I realise its very costly to do this)
  9. Excellent to hear Dale keep us posted with the updates. Sounds like a good jump
  10. I know of someone who did the same thing Broke his back in several places, fractured tail bone and fractured femur and pelvis. he is still not back in the air, but when he is Im sure he will have calmed things down a lot going on recent conversations with him,.....
  11. Who cares about his weight or the price. A student has no business on a 143 Reserve regardless of wingloading. Exactly.
  12. Agreed. Thats my procedure but without the bench!! For me its: Hold rig, step through fully slackened leg straps. Lift up and put arms through shoulder straps. Check and tighten chest strap correctly. Tighten leg straps. Check all straps once again because Im paranoid. Thats the way I was taught and Im sticking with it!!
  13. You are right. "Line dump" is an urban myth... AFAIK no one has been able to document in on film. The canopy will stay in the bag until the locking stows are released and you can’t have an out of sequence deployment with the canopy still in the bag. I built this bag a few years ago, see attachments, and put over 1000 jumps on it with 3 different canopies. Never had a problem related to the bag design. Sparky Very impressive mjosparky Im guessing you are a qualified rigger yes?!
  14. Ok, so Ive been offered a Vector 2 from an old time jumper that he has used as his spare CReW rig. I have searched this forum high and low and all the threads I can find are from like 2001 and 2002! So, intended uses: Spare rig for belly flying mainly and doing some CReW on as Im just learning this awesome disciplne. I have read about some modifications needed to be done by a rigger to make it freefly friendly.... Im not keen on modifying rigs as its essentially untested compared to the OEM design - thoughts? Also, this rig has loads of great reviews and has sold of 40,000 iirc from when I looked it up (could be wrong) Is it still considered a 'safe' rig and would YOU fly with it?!!! Basically, I could either buy this now as its cheap and I know the seller well. OR// wait an unknown amount of time till something else more expensive comes up. (Im trying to avoid expense at the moment!) Opinions appreciated - especially from the Riggers out there
  15. Any chance you could make that photo a bit smaller?
  16. You may want to re-think that. Well, for sure you'll need to re-think that. OK, badly worded! This is not in reference to the OP but in answer to your comment. My rigger has told me several stories of when a PC is thrown, and the main doesnt leave the container *for whatever reason*, that often when the reserve is deployed, the main may deploy due to pressure being taken off it. Is this incorrect? Regarding the badly worded part. I meant FJC taught me to cutaway a main where the PC has been thrown but nothing has happened (aka pc in tow)
  17. edited/ Great job surviving though by the OP. Understanding why what happened, happened, may make you feel better about the whole incident? Time will help Im sure....
  18. Well said! I love hop and pops. Low ones are cool as like Kim says, its good to be cool about getting out low, not panicking and deploying sharpisjh. In case of an in flight emergency. But the views from a high hop and pop on a good weather days susnet load, are in my opinion unbeatable!
  19. Good post. I agree that comms seemed good between the two and although I am not a Ti, I think that the camera guy was acting in what he thought were the best interests of the Ti. They werent in the end but hey, Im guessing the Ti and student landed safe and well or else this video would be evidence and would not be on the internet... I never realised the drogue was so strong. How much lbs of pull does a tandem drogue have ? any riggers out there?
  20. Top stuff Dale Seriously, nice going there mate. It may take you a few jumps and some experimenting with your crotch panel etc but it sure looks possible going on that dive. And the 1 instructor seemed to have only a one hand grip on your harness as well so I dont think was affecting much stabilising to the rocking. Keep up the good work and keep the updates coming
