Intentional Cutaway Desired - Raven Micro 150 Concerns
riggerrob replied to mdrejhon's topic in Safety and Training
Well he didn't have to do it just to satisfy our curiosity! Interesting results though. Good that he's ok. He doesn't even know about this thread. His last previous reserve ride was in the '90s, under a round. He says the round landed better. ............................................................................................ I reached the same conclusion after one ride on my S.O.S. (Parachutes de France, 1985-vintage, 190 square foot, 5-cell). Even my Strato-Star (Delta II, Paradactyl, Unit, DC-5, kit parachutes, etc) flew better than that S.O.S. -
Stuff old StratoStars with feathers and they make excellent down comforters.

That is one huge roof! If they covered the roof with solar panels, their long- term energy costs would be zero. If their electricians are as bright as their marketeers they might even turn a profit by selling excess electricity to the city. -
We've all seen cop beating someone videos. But most of those videos doesn't show what happened before the beating. .......... ............................................... Agreed For example, Los Angeles had a long-standing tradition: if you run from the cops you will be beaten. All the SoCal criminals know that tradition. Rodney King should have understood that tradition because he had been arrested (for petty crimes) several times before his televised beating. The only people who were surprised by King's beating were bleeding hearts on the far side of the country.

Video reportedly shows beheading of reporter Steven Sotloff by ISIS

Yeah. You know said interviewer is Sean Hannity, right? http://www.buildyourmarriage.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Mediocrity-Setting-the-Bar-Low.jpg ............................................... During that interview Sean came across first as a spin doctor and secondly as a staunch conservative. Sadly Sean demonstrated few research or analytical skills. -

If you listen to the entire interview Phil Robertson comes across as better read, better educated and more analytical than the interviewer. While Phil's opinions may be to the political right of mine, I can respect his views because he has researched and analysised the situation before publically expressing his opinion. For example, Phil understands that much third world violence is mere civil war. Phil believes that the US Army is wise to withdraw from meddling in civil wars. Phil also understands that Iraq has "lost generations" of poorly-educated, emotionally shattered, former conscripts discarded after the Iran-Iraq war, 2 Gulf Wars and a decade of civil war. Phil is smart enough to equate these damaged veterans to "gangs and steroids." -

Phil May be better read than the average jihadist, but sadly his logic is not much deeper. The saddest thing is American media spinning Phil's interview to make him look even shallower. Note, large percentages of jihadis are illiterate. What little education they get is mostly about reciting verses from the Koran. Sadly, their education lacks "big picture" concepts about the life and times of the Prophet Mohammed. -
The 12 year rule was written by the Cypres factory. Since all the Federal Air Regulations loop back to "in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions" you are only allowed to jump Cypres when you follow the Cypres manual. IOW you cannot legally wear a reserve - containing a 13-year-old Cypres - in the passenger cabin of any American/British/Canadian/Dutch, etc. registered jump-plane.

woop. Only possible reason for me to downsize would be to get better wind penetration ....... ..............,.........................................:...,....... Down-sizing is the second best way to penetrate strong winds. The best way to handle strong winds (avoid getting blown off the DZ) is to learn how to out smart the winds.

They automatically assume that all young skydivers want to compete in professional canopy piloting, pond-swooping competitions.

..... World War 3 against USA? ..... .................................................................................... What? Didn't you read the memo? We have already been fighting the "War Against Terror" since 2001 ......... maybe since long before, depending how you count ..... It is a world war because all major nations have experienced violent acts of war on their soil. Sadly, few people recognize the "War on Terror" as a world war because they are not trained to recognize it. Few people recognize "as symmetric wars." Sadly, entire generations of NATO and Warsaw Pact troops were brain-washed to fight an older model of war that requires tanks and artillery and atomic bombs. It is a good thing that Al-Queda can rarely afford artillery. We are locked in an assumetric war that pits semi-trained Taliban levees against missile-firing drones. -
one-on-the-playground-and-the-one-with-an-uzi/[/url] If you (general you) think authorities should go after the parents of the girl in the Uzi incident then one of the least convincing arguments you can make is presenting an example of authorities over-reacting and trumping up charges when they got involved in some other situation. ................................................................................ Worst possible action. Only a heartless lawyer would suggest charging parents with criminal negligence. Lawyers would be the only people to profit from that sort of cruel lawsuit. That cruel a lawsuit would only prolong their grief. And I do not believe that the parents are guilty of criminal negligence. They tried to protect their child by hiring a professional shooting instructor. The professional died because of his own incompetence. Let the guilt be buried with the shooting instructor, then quietly install new policies that prevent 9-year-old girls from shooting machine guns. You don't need any new regulations if gun range owners are bright enough to agree "that is not permitted on my range." ...... similar to USPA's Basic Safety Regulations (FARS etc.) keeping all but the most stupid skydivers alive.

Criminals will always have guns. If I fear gun violence, it is very easy to avoid armed criminals. Drug dealers shoot other drug dealers on a regular basis in Vancouver. Drug dealers rarely shoot innocent civilians in Vancouver. It is easy to avoid the neighbourhoods frequented by drug dealers .... ergo it is easy to avoid drug dealers ...... ergo it is easy to avoid armed criminals ...... ergo it is easy to avoid getting shot.

May I suggest that you are too quick to advise young jumpers to downsize? Ask the young jumper about their long-term goals before giving gear advice. What if the young jumper wants to compete in precision landing? They might never buy a Para-Foil smaller than 260. What if they want to BASE jump? Their first BASE canopy will probably be in the 250 to 300 range? What if they want to fly wingsuits? By the time they have 200 jumps(minimum to start wingsuit-specific training) they will barely have gotten comfortable with all the corners of the envelope of their first canopy (e.g. mastered all of Bill Von's exercises). If they are smart, they will continue to jump that same one-to-one canopy for their first few dozen wingsuit dives. What if the junior jumper's goal is to jump wing suits from cliffs? What if their long-term goals include BASE precision landing competitions? Bottom line some junior jumpers will be happy hanging under a large canopy for hundreds of jumps, but you will only learn that if you ask them a series of detailed questions about their long-term goals.

Any Master Rigger can easily sew up a chest strap extender and mail it to you. Then you attach it your own harness in one minute. The debate is really about the cost of shipping it to Norway.

Closing pins piercing bridles - Total Malfunction
riggerrob replied to Skydivesg's topic in Gear and Rigging
Gary, i see your comments as 2 distinct issues. Your first comment covers pin cover design and your second comment concerns bridle routing. May I address the issue of pin cover design? All modern pin covers re-connect to themselves. The most popular (Icon, Mirage & Vector) pin covers are sewn to the top main flap and tuck back upwards into a pocket on the top main flap. The second most popular (Infinity and Javelin) pin cover pattern still has the pin cover sewn to the main top flap, but it tucks downwards under the lower edge of the main top flap. Even if you sew a strong magnet into a Javelin pin cover the main still opens normally and the magnets stay closed until it returns to the packing mat. The key point is that neither type of pin cover has to release/pull away from the main top flap during a normal opening. IOW modern pin covers still work with a variety of bridle routines. The last time we saw main pin covers that needed to separate was circa 1980. Can you remember Velcro-closed main pin covers on Wonderhogs? Wonderhog bridles stripped open the Velcro during every opening. They needed precise bridle-routing to tear the main pin cover open. IOW If you miss-routed the bridle on a Wonderhog, fresh Velcro continued to holdthe container closed. -

Wilkie added that Phoenix Area Skydiving is “owned by an out-of-state person ...." ........................................................................................... Part of the NIMBY excuse .... Sounds like a smart businessman working the Michigan market during the summer and the Arizona market during summer. Is Arizona upset that he is not paying all his taxes in Arizona? What is the difference between Arizona and Michigan state taxes? -

Visit the websites of dealers like: Action Air, AeroStore, Chuting Star, Para-Gear, Square One, Square Two, Square Three, Sunshine Factory, etc. and wander through their lists of second-hand gear. You will find lots of canopies suitable for smaller women, some containers and a few harnesses. One option is to buy a medium-sized container and have it re-harnessed to fit you. Re-harnessing is best done by the factory or your local Master Rigger. -

...... I've been able to land the Pulse 190 consistently in no wind, but I haven't had a downwind landing yet. .... ............................................................................... Don't rush into downwind landings. Downwind landings tear up jumpsuits, leg pads, containers, etc. I know how to patch jumpsuits, leg pads and containers, but only surgeons are allowed to sew humans back together. -

Older Dolphins are easy to update to make them as free-fly-friendly as newer Dolphins. It is - at most - half day's labour for a Master Rigger. -

If you are getting bored on your belly, you are not trying hard enough to expand your skills. Some old farts devoted 15,000 jumps to perfect their belly-skills before sit-flying was invented. Hah! Hah! -

Moderators ........ Please combine this thread with last year's thread about the Service Bulletin published by United Parachute Technologies (aka the Vector factory) about the same problem. Flying High (aka the Sidewinder factory) published the same solution 20-plus years ago.
