Twin Turbine Aircraft and other Jump craft questions
riggerrob replied to Elisha's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
.... Twin engines, safer, faster climb. .... ............................................... You and I are going to have to "agree to disagree" about twin engines being "safer." Light twins require precise piloting skills IMMEDIATELY after one engine quits. If the engine quits on a Cessna, Kodiak, PAC 750, Porter, etc. the pilot only has one decision make: which field to land in? -

Why did Uncle Sam hang you under a Lightning? Were you on a canopy formation team? If you want to continue doing canopy formations, you will need to shop around because only a few DZ have enough skilled jumpers to put together CF teams. OTOH if you are mainly interested in solo jumping there are dozens of canopies that open softer, glide flatter and land softer than Lightnings. You might want to look a Triathlons first because they have a familiar 7-cell planform but are much more forgiving on landing. -
Twin Turbine Aircraft and other Jump craft questions

***A little off topic, but my dream ship would be: Top wing, with dehidral, similar wing to the PAC, .... 3 rows of seats, Tailgate. Why? Top wing design is just more stable(CG is low), and dehidral offers stability. ..... 3 rows of seats and tailgate...... ............ We can agree on some of those points. I like high wings because the cabin floor is usually lower, making them easier to load. I like tailgates because they are easier to exit. I also like Skyvans because they allow me to stand on my hindlegs. Erect posture makes a big difference when you are carrying a 55 pound tandem rig and a 200 hundred pound student. As for high wings being more .... just be careful about adding too much extra dihedral (ala PAC 750) because too much dihedral will create Dutch roll. Have you ever noticed that the big military transport planes (C-5, C-17, C-141) all have high wings and negative dihedral? -

..... On a side note about Wings (not directed at the OP, just in general) I have put about 600 jumps on my Wings container. It's not that good. I can see several issues. 1)The riser covers suck. It took me a while to figure out how to pack it without a toggle creeping out. 2)The reserve flap is just not designed correctly. I did the service bulletin to make the flap longer so that it does not pop out anymore when I freefly. The reserve pilot chute fabric is sometimes visible. ...... There are few more nit picky things but they are mostly due to my lack of skill and not a design issue. Good luck ........................................... Hire a better rigger, one who understands the finer points of packing Wings reserves. Returning to the original poster ... when you chat up the local civilian rigger, ask him/her which rigs he/she prefers packing. The more your local rigger likes a particular harness/container, the quicker and neater the service. ..... Flip side, a DZO told his girlfriend "If you buy a brand X container you will have to ship it out of province/state for repacks." Hah! Hah! -

Finally! A winner!

.................................................................... Agreed Most police shootings in Canada are investigated by police from another city. Sometimes those shootings are investigated by provincial police or the RCMP. The most visible police shootings include coroner's investigations and public testimony.

What happens after a collision?

.............................................................. Sad that a judge would waste time hearing this frivolous lawsuit, especially since so many rules of the sea and federal aid regulations favour the jumper who is landing. The landing jumper aimed for an open spot, then some fool filled the landing spot and wondered why he got landed upon. That is probably the same fool who walked in front of a (law-abiding) cement truck then wondered why he got run over. -
Burger King: This is how a "Tax Inversion" works
riggerrob replied to jgoose71's topic in Speakers Corner
***What they did makes sense, and not simply because of the tax benefits. Tim Hortons is good at coffee, coffee is high margin, and BK is not good at coffee. ................................................................................... That would explain why you often see Tim Horton's coffee shops on the same building as Wendy's burger joints. Recent rumours have TH buying Cold Stone ice cream parlours .... probably for the same tax dodge. -
Another option is to protect the edges of your paper/cardboard patterns with adhesive metal tape.

PT6A-114 and -114A engines are only built for Caravans. The single-stack exhaust is unique to Caravans. I forget Cessna's original logic, but it had something to do with keeping fumes out of the cabin and not setting the belly baggage panier on fire. The first time we saw a single exhaust on a PT6A was on a helicopter. Now Blackhawk salesmen tell us that since PT6A-114 was originally designed to produce only 600 horsepower , it's breathing is limited by the exhaust. To solve the breathing problem Blackhawk offers up-grade kits that include more-powerful versions of PT6A with the more popular double exhaust. -
Metal patterns are often used in production. Prototypes are more often cut with metal rulers, carpenter's triangles, coffee cans, French curves, etc.

This reminds me of a city council meeting last year. Citizens were upset because one drug dealer shot another drug dealer in the parking lot between the hockey rink and city hall. It was the first murder in (sleepy suburb) Port Moody in about 15 years. Large numbers of panicked soccer moms demanded that (the tiny municipal) police do more to protect them. I challenged the soccer moms to provide more "eyes on the street" (quoting Jane Jacobs). The last thing a drug dealer wants is a nosey old lady gossiping about his strange visitors. On a personal note, I do not fear getting shot in Vancouver because the majority of murders are between drug dealers and I quit doing recreational drugs many years ago.

Use the metal ruler to clamp fabric to the table while you slide your hot-knife along the edge.

This was the first summer the Vancouver Police patrolled (clothing optional) Wreck Beach full time. I wonder how badly a constable had to lip-off the duty Sargent to get assigned to walk down the 500 steps and patrol a beach in long, dark pants and an armoured vest. Note: the only access is via a stairway.

May I suggest that you also use a metal (steel or aluminium) ruler? The best rulers have cork or rubber glued to the underside.

What? Co-operating with gliders to maintain airport access? What? Quoting accurate, local numbers about a gas purchases? Next thing we know you will co-operate with a flying club or aerobatic pilots or kitplane builders or HEAVEN FORBID warbird owners! What is this world coming to with sport flyers co-operating? -
Good on the table. Do you have a hot-knife?

Porosity testing machines are expensive and rare. Canopy manufacturers - testing new fabric and a few test canopies after X number of years in service. Military Parachute Maintenance Depots - where inventory includes thousands of chutes. Strong Tandem Service Centers - the only Canadian STSC is in Alberta
-
Parachute Industry Technical Standard 102 New canopies come with: Canopy Suspension lines Slider Connector links Connector link covers (maybe) Packing data card Manual Hand anything less to a prissy, OCD, over-worked rigger and it may take a few weeks to get your new reserve assembled and packed.

Final hint: stereotypical human Newfoundlanders have a reputation for loud and rowdy kitchen parties that include singing, cider-sipping, banjo-playing, beer-chugging, dancing, drinking, tall-tale-telling, rum-guzzling, etc. After Newfoundlanders empty a rum barrel they rinse the barrel with hot water and drink screech! Can you see a common thread in this hint? Now can any of you main-landers deduce what happens when you leave a Newfoundland dog alone with a keg of brandy?
