These aren't the box cutters you're looking for. Move along.
AndyMan replied to quade's topic in The Bonfire
That makes a lot of sense to me. You're in line. You forget to take off your big honkin belt buckle. You walk through, it goes off. You take off the belt buckle, it doesn't go off. You go on on your way. That makes sense to me. Here's the current scenario: You're standing in line, you forget to take off your big honkin belt buckle, you set it off, you get detained and closely inspected for 3-5 minutes. It's not a major hassle, but it's still a hassle. I much prefer taking off the belt buckle, then trying again. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Remember that windchill formlas are attempts to quantify what something "feels" like. Once you get below -40, it just doesn't feel that different. Trust me on that one... Therefore, windchill formulas are effectively useless in the extreme temperature ranges. Yes, this includes current conditions in most of Canada and the northeastern US. I'm sure glad Chicago managed to avoid it, tho... _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Why do gear manufactures promise a date that they can't deliver on
AndyMan replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Gear and Rigging
Keep in mind that Mirage will ship in 6-8 weeks, I imagine you can probably ask for Rush and get it just as quick as the 5 weeks that other manufacturer is giving you... BTW - I'm all for naming slow companies. I've done that repeatedly. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
Eek! Wrong! Nope! Nada! Zilch! Zero! Hold the Phone! Her Daddy wouldn't even think of jumping from an airplane. Her Aunt and Uncle are the skydivers... _Am (just checked, craichead sez she's not preggers....) __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

You're the one who should be embarassed! It's her aunt who's the weirdo. I think. _Am - the uncle, btw... __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

From slashdot While still rather expensive, this does appear to be an ideal video archival device. A Terrabyte for a grand... what is the world coming to? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

And $22 for a 1280 cartridge is awesome, too. Thanks! _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

ARGH! - please help, separation questions (yet again)
AndyMan replied to Newbie's topic in Safety and Training
Here's what you should take from looking at that picture. The line of jumpers leaving each plane is almost perfectly striaght. With a few exceptions, the angle doesn't change at all. It's virtually constant. Now wether or not any jumpers in that pic happen to be at a 45 degree angle or not is meaningless, because they're all roughly at the same angle. Those who have just exit, and those who exited 10 seconds ago are ALL at the same angle. The angle doesn't change, so the angle tells us nothing about separation. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. -
I'm really disapointed, I was looking forward to playing with one, but I was really looking for a 150.... Bummer. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

That's really disapointing. That means I'd be loading the biggest one at 2.2 - which I presume is beyond the sweetspot for a non-crossbraced canopy. Oh well. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I'm currently sporting a pair of Airwalks, because I'm into h/p landings. My wife calls them my "swoopy shoes". I like them because the treads are very small, so I should be able to slide easily. They were also quite cheap. That said, if I was to buy shoes specifically for AFF, they would have big treads and good ankle support. That said, I don't know anyone who's bought new shoes just for AFF... The day were people needed to buy a pair of combat boots just for landings are thankfully over. A reasonably good general purpose athletic shoe should be fine. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

This is also where I'm going, especially with freeflying. I much prefer to sit outside a formation, which works well without a wide angle because the formations are small. It certainly does make framing more dificult, though. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Has anyone got a recomendation for a cheap source for Epson inks? Also, has anyone had any luck using knock-offs? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Don't ever allow yourself to feel rushed to answer a question. Whevever they ask something, take a moment to pause and clearly think out your response. Try and think through the implications and ramifications of what you're going to say. I've done a few interviews, and even when the reporters are friends, its frequently the case that I don't recognize any of the thoughts they've paraphrased from me. It's not that they're speficically misquoting me, it's just that they hear a very different thing then I thought I was saying. So, my advice - clearly think through every question, and make sure that your answer is thorough enough that it can not be taken out of context. Even if you need to ponder for 10 seconds before answering, that's fine. The reporter does not want to misquote or misattribute a thought to you. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I've had two canopies. My first was a used Triathlon, I put around 300 jumps on it. It served its purpose well. My second canopy was a new Stileto. I bought new because I could afford to, and I planned on keeping the canopy for quite some time. Craichead is just now buying her first set of gear. We're planning on buying new because we're unable to find the canopy that she's looking for - a 190 Sabre2. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

No skydiving helmets offer really good head protection, so the field of comparison is pretty limited. That said, the Gath helmet offers the least amount of protection of any. Personally, I would avoid them. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I think I covered that already. The problem was a homophobic southern conservative school superintendent who tought his students that having a gay mother is a punishable offense. He just did it in the name of "policital correctness" so he could get away with it, or so he thought. The "problem" as you put it, was the ideas that the superintendent was enforcing (right), not the fact that he framed it in PC (left). _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
You're missing the point. This is not a new story. The event in particular happened about two monthes ago, and has had very good coverage, everyone from Salon to Dan Savage. The issue is NOT liberal extremists being overly PC, quite the contrary the issue is homophobic southern conservatives who seem to think having a gay mom is something this kid should be punished for talking about. The ACLU is demanding the case be removed from Marcus' file and that the school apologize to the boy and his mother, Sharon Huff. The school superintendant refused to apologise. http://www.aclu.org/LesbianGayRights/LesbianGayRights.cfm?ID=14481&c=104 http://www.leesvilledailyleader.com/articles/2003/12/13/news/news6.txt This is a totally absurd case, but the absurdity lies on the right, not the left. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

I agree. Generally its not the people who've chosen to agresively downsize that concern me, as long as its in reason. It's the people that have chose NOT to downsize, and think that makes them safe. I am guilty of cartwheeling accross landing areas as I was learning how to do high speed landings. Flubbed landings are part of the learning process, and are not in themselves indications that somebody is out of their league. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Yup. You can ditch the jacket if you REALLY hate them. Shirt, tie, good shoes, and nice pants are required. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
-
It depends. Start with a mid-ground semi-formal outfit. Guys wearing a tie, nice shoes. Women wearing a nice blowse, slacks, and conservative shoes. If they mailed out invitations, go more formal. If they are having it catered, go more formal. If its at the DZ, go less formal. Guys can not go wrong with a shirt and tie. Women can not go wrong with a nice blouse and slacks. Shoes should be conservative. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

Malfunction Cutaway...packed your own?
AndyMan replied to Michele's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It'd be careful about reading too much into the numbers. As far as I can tell, the only thing they indicate is that more people pack for themselves, then hire packers. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
