I think we are digressing here. First flight? Yea, whatever you've found works... keep it simple... The student needs to focus on basic stuff first. But!!!! The student will also be in a small suit! Here we should be discussing about "continuing education" for wingsuiters. Say you've mastered a thing or two, want a bigger suit, with a giant tailwing and rock solid inflation... this is beyond first flight stuff, you are no longer overwhelmed with all that new information. This is the point where one needs to realize there is still way more to learn! (and its' a helluva lot of fun, too) Things that are easy to cope with in the smaller suit don't go so smoothly when you have a bunch of well-inflated fabric to deal with. I think this is what Butters is really getting at. This is where knowing how to fly in all orientations before upsizing comes in handy. Maybe balling up is all it takes in most cases... but maybe it's a good idea to build a strong skill set so when things get weird, you have more than one possible action to throw at it.

I think thats a whole different subject ... I don't think it's a whole different subject. After all, if folks learn to backfly than they'll be more likely outfly these occurrences before they become incidents ... or am I wrong? I fully agree with Butters on this one. Exploring all aspects of flying on a smaller suit does sound like a good way to minimize such problems. I'm not saying backflying is a solve-all thing, but it looks like usual problems people have with flatspins often happen on their back So here's my reasoning. People with far more experience, please correct me if I'm wrong: If you find yourself slowly spinning on your back but are already used to flying on your back and especially turning while on your back, you are more likely to immediately have good reflexes for counter-turning or somehow outflying whatever is happening. What causes the flatspin? Something is not balanced. There is an asymmetry. Let us for a second ignore what caused the asymmetry (could've been a burble, collision with another flyer, or just sudden improper body position) and look into what really makes it *worse*: keeping that asymmetry. This could be bad body position (e.g. you're on your back with one foot higher than the other or something, or even as much as being too stiff because you're not used to being on your back and you naturally tense up) or suit-related (e.g. a bootie slipped off). Anything else??? Ideas?? For the bad body position, if you already know how to fly on your back, you know how to restore a good flying position rather than trying to figure it out on the spot and potentially worsening the body position, and hence 'feeding' the flatspin. This is why we don't seem to see these nasty flatspins as much in belly to earth orientations, except, perhaps, on students with not enough flights... cause we're used to outflying anything that happens on our bellies... but not so much when we find ourselves in different orientations. If the reason is outside of the body position realm, like the blown up bootie example, you will at least be able to spot the problem and take counter-actions. Maybe you can't do much about that bootie flapping above your ankle, but you sure as hell know what to do with your arm wings that are still in place, so you could, for instance, bend the wingtip gripper in your hand to turn in the opposite direction. I'm not suggesting new techniques for dealing with flatspins. Don't get me wrong here. Yea, if things are out of control, either ball up or track the hell out of it... agreed. What I'm saying, though, is that knowing how to fly your suit in all orientations likely gets you to quickly outfly the potential spin before it even becomes the kind of problem that necessitates balling up. People often talk about having induced flatspins and therefore having the confidence of knowing how to get out of them. I dare ask... how many of those induced flatspins were only practiced on their belly? This leads me to also point out something that Brian Drake also touched upon earlier in this thread... what is the skill set that we should recommend to someone who wants to fly a bigger suit? Perhaps we need a wingsuit upsizing checklist just like that old canopy downsizing checklist article in the safety section of this website. Has anyone put together a comprehensive list of things one should try on a small suit before putting on the bigger one? Because we all know by now that just telling someone "you're not ready" doesn't work.

runway? all you need is a good grass strip

your description was too long, I bet Skwrl's ADD kicked in before he finished reading it... so... oops, you guys are screwed :) confusion shall last forever!! Glen!!! (this was just too tempting) as for the real Glen - Fuck you too!!!
-
Flock U page was referring to his participation in Marl in 2008, as Skwrl also pointed out. Perhaps the description was a bit ambiguous. All fixed now. As for the chutingstar descriptions... don't quote me on this one but I'm assuming it's a just bit of the ohhh so common marketing fluff you see everywhere in advertising... I don't think it was meant to be taken as literally as "there is this big thing called the championship where Justin cleared every prize on the table" It probably could have been worded more like "world class wingsuit flyer" but that's not as catchy... It's nothing new. I recall seeing lots of similar talk in the freefly world, where someone who won a medal/prize (be it any of the first 3 places) at some competition of international caliber and/or participated in world records and such often gets called world champion when you see DZs advertising that person's load organizing events...

but of course it's been done before. That's just Yuri and the Z-Device

well... in the true spirit of this forum we should now discuss the definition of a 4-state jump since technically you only flew above them but didn't exactly land in all 4 of them...

WingsuitCompetition.com - 2nd Artistic Wingsuit Competition
SuperGirl replied to mccordia's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Awesome! GOOD LUCK BOYS & GIRLS!! (all of you) Looking forward to seeing all the results. Thanks to whoever wrote that scoring webpage for putting the damn auto-refresh tag in there, otherwise my F5 key would've been long gone by the end of the competition. My keyboard loves you and so do I. -
I thought you already took JSho for a "ride"... That video doesn't lie, you know :)
-
ok, thanks for clarifying. all is good then I'll stop yelling at ya
-
sounds really fuckin hard but definitely not impossible. just need a damn good backflyer and lots of trial and error. definitely more doable than that wingsuit landing thing :) the hard part comes from the two not really seeing each other because they're facing opposite ways... unless the rodeo is already a backfly one so the bottom pair can see where they're going up... might work with some air to air communication systems involved and a third flyer giving directions
-
I didn't say I was that surprised... just annoyed. but no worries... all is gooood yea but at least in your case they were bitching over who did what first, not saying to your face that it didn't even happen :) count me in! I should be back in your neck of the woods in a couple weeks anyway

How to make a snow angel / Visiting Brokeback Mountain
SuperGirl replied to unclecharlie95's topic in Wing Suit Flying
haaaahahahahaha, priceless! -
Holy crap, are you guys serious??! Toooo funny!!!! Very first reply to this thread was already a "wah wah wah it didn't happen" bs What the fuck? This is not world record bullshit. This is some fun rodeo footage and should not be taken all that seriously. Call it a loose definition of the word transfer, but it's still a fuckin transfer: 1. Crystal is riding Purple 2. Crystal grabs a hold of JSho's chest strap 3. Crystal lets go of Purple and keeps holding onto JSho (be it in a rather chaotic way) In conclusion Crystal gets *transfered* from Purple to Jsho What's so complicated? The whole grabbing of chest strap and holding on for quite a bit of time makes it an 'ok' transfer. Can this jump be perfected so that the flyer on top doesn't get burbled and actually lifts off with the passenger, or some other interesting scenario? Sure it can. Go have fun and do it, bitches!! We're not trying to judge record spacing with overly anal grids here. This is supposed to be FUN stuff. This is not meant to be the "you can't ever beat this" shit of the millennium. It's a fun skydive that was worth sharing. It's supposed to make you chuckle... You're supposed to go like "hahaha JSho you're so gay you were too attracted to Purple Mike's butt weren't ya? that's why you fell on them" or something... instead of whining that it's a false claim For chrissakes, JSho even clearly pointed out that there was "a decent amount of luck involved" What more of a disclaimer do you want? And what's the big deal? Relax, you people and let's do some more rodeos!! Who wants me to ride them? ehh?? anyone??? Oh, and mr_prick... well done on the immediate attempt at yet another brand war theme, like we haven't had enough of that already. Why the need for the Tonysuit sarcasm? It's like saying Purple Mike is gay cause he's in a V3. No connection whatsoever

Article on landing wingsuit w/o parachute
SuperGirl replied to gottabefunky's topic in Wing Suit Flying
120 km/h is what I ment.. admit it, you just like to exaggerate your measurements -
that was my point... figuring out how much of this is a suit issue and how much is a measurement issue.
-
Especialy in colder weather enviroments, an additional layer if clothing seems to prevent the system from functioning as advertised. With the sleeve not sliding due to clothing bunching up. you ain't supposed to wear that big puffy fur coat underneath your wingsuit, man! seriously, now... it is interesting that you bring this up... and I am curious exactly how much clothing bunching up we are talking about, because I've had no issues with mine. in winter I wear up to 2 layers underneath... one under armour coldgear kinda thing and maybe another polartec layer if it's really freezing and snowing outside. with those on I can still reach just fine, as a matter of fact the sleeve slides even more easily I can only imagine this happening with some really bulky sweatshirt underneath.. which is not the best choice anyway since it can jam zippers and other stuff like that. perhaps the measurements were taken incorrectly. if you plan on jumping the suit a lot in cold weather then you need to measure with the clothes that you'll be wearing underneath... just like you would measure for a tight regular jumpsuit by having some clothes on, and not completely naked. complaining about the suit because there was a lot of bunchy clothing underneath is a bit like complaining that the booties were sliding off my feet cause I was wearing stilettos

brilliant!!!
-
yea... why doesn't everyone do that? I mean... what are you guys... cheap or something? It's just throwing a few more thousand dollars here and there, no biggie :)
-
why so interested, Mike? no, I have not yet received any pics/video. still waiting.
-
+1 Let's hear it for JD... Him... Him... Fuck Him!!!
-
oh-oh... you guys are still so close... I wonder who's gonna win??? Shall we compare the penis sizes for the final round?? Please post pics & video taken with your brand spanking new 3GS iCock

really, Jarno??? really??? of all possible arguments you could bring, you mention a failed BACKFLYING 5WAY??? you know as much as I do that it's a fuckin hard formation to accomplish, and let me remind you that there is video of YOU going low on your back as well, or Mike (wearing phantom) taking out Chuck on his back and other bloopers which all have NOTHING to do with the suit and everything to do with the flying... Do you honestly think JSho would've been in his slot better in that particular moment in a Phantom2? I seriously doubt it. And he's one badass motherfucker when it comes to backflying. Shit happens when you try a back-5-way. It's not like we do that every day... You couldn't have chosen a worse example to point out suit features.
